How to unlock the The Thing achievement in The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes - Definitive Guide

Missable achievement - you have to fulfill several conditions:
(If you do not want any spoilers stop reading here!)

Rachel should stay in good realtionship with Jason and Eric

1. I believe the achievement "Illuminating Evidence" (Eric discovered the unexpected effects of the UV wand) is required for this. I also made a guide for this achievement so check it out wink

2. In the "Sacrificial Chamber" sequence (after you entered into chamber with Salim and his Capitan) you will do something like "Last man standing" you will change between characters, there will be a moment when you play as Salim (after the Human-Vampyre is holding Nick) and you will get a choice to shoot a flying demon in Salim's direction or shoot demon who attacks Rachel, shoot the Demon who is flying in your direction. Because of this decision Rachel will get infected! - this is first condition.

3. Eric CAN NOT die before this sequence with chamber with strange antique musical instrument in the middle, also CAN NOT lose his UV wand (I believe it's possible).

4. Close to the end of the game you will eventually end up in chamber (All members regroup in small area with this strange antique musical instrument in the middle). After Rachel helped Salim with this antique musical instrument she will start transforming into one of the demons / vampires NOW IMPORTANT CHOICES:
1 - When she will want to detonate herself with knife and grenade do not press anything!! Time will pass and she will give up with this idea.
2 - While Eric and Nick are holding here you have to choose "Do not kill me" and "Its me Jason" when Jason is aiming in Rachel's direction.
3 - This will eventually end up with a fight with Jason (You have to press cn_X a few times in order to disarm him). After you do that you have the last choice - you have to agree with cocoon idea.
4 - They will move you together and Eirc eventually will take out his UV wand and will force this parasite / alien out of Rachel's body.

For now this is the only idea I know to unlock the achievement, if anyone will share experience I will update the guide

Absolutely bull. I tried exactly what you said and Jason still shot her.

In my brain play through up until bloodbath I then saved Clarice, then Jason shot her, I did then mostly brain choices except where Jason and Eric confront Rachel and did “say nothing” for both options for Eric and had her dump them both. I did not retreat at the battle and shot the flying vampire to get her infected, then kept them all alive until the music machine. I did not get number 1, but got 2, 3 and 4. So this just adds that there is more going on.

Cessencia - agree. This is definitely more complex than it appears. Ihave not confirmed, but it is possible that for Jason to choose not to shoot Rachel, he has to also have not shot Clarice earlier.

Tried this on one playthrough where Jason shot Clarice at the earliest opportunity, and even though I made the same dialogue choices for Rachel as recommended in the guide, Jason still shot Rachel.

In the playthrough I eventually unlocked this in, Jason did not shoot Clarice, but the crew abandoned her before the Sacrificial Chamber. Under this conditon, Jason did not shoot Rachel later.

The other option is it is somehow determinant on the relationship between Jason and Rachel?

The following steps must occur for this trophy to unlock:
  • Eric must survive while trying to save Rachel from falling off the cliff. Either cut the rope, or if Nick and Jason leave Merwin behind, they'll save Eric before he falls.
  • Salim must successfully complete all of his QTEs during his encounter with the monster, which will lead to the monster walking in sunlight and being burned.
  • Salim and Nick must work together to kill a monster.
  • Eric must survive the initial confrontation with Salim. As Nick, don't tell Salim to hide, and do everything you can to de-escalate the situation. If Nick and Salim's relationship is high enough, it should be enough to keep everyone alive.
  • Eric will eventually perform an autopsy on a monster, using the UV wand, where he'll discover that it acts as a weapon against the monsters.
  • During the big battle with every character and the monsters, Salim wil have the option of attacking one of two monsters. Choose the one leaping at Salim, which ensures that Rachel is infected by the other one.
  • When Jason and Salim are exploring the city, make sure that you interact with the corpse covered in yellow goo, to learn about the cocoons.
With all of this done, a scene will play out in the star chamber where Rachel is overcome by her infection. Make sure to fail the QTE with the knife, and then beg Jason not to shoot Rachel twice. Salim will suggest putting her in a cocoon, make sure to agree to that plan, and before that happens, Eric will use the UV wand to save Rachel. If you haven't already, use this opportunity to hunt down the parasite and complete the QTE to find the parasite for Secret 50.

1. We get rid of Clarissa, let our comrades shoot her so that Eric survives, because he has an ultraviolet lamp.

It is also important that Eric learns that ultraviolet light burns monsters. (Trophy "In a New World")
Otherwise, he will not be able to help Rachel and she will be left in the cocoon.
