How to unlock the Stalhrim Crafter achievement in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition - Definitive Guide

This achievement is missable .

Requirements for this achievement :
-Travel to Solstheim
-Do the quest A New Source of Stalhrim
-Have Ebony Smithing perk unlocked in the Smithing perk tree

Below a more detail guide

For this achievement you will need to travel to Solstheim ,stalhrim is a rare crafting material found in several locations all over Solstheim but can only be mined with an Ancient Nordic Pickaxe.

If you wish to get the Ancient Nordic Pickaxe you will need to talk to the blacksmith Glover Mallory in Raven Rock (the 1st place you land when you arrive in Solstheim), he will give a quest to retrieve his Ancient Nordic Pickaxe from Crescius Caerellius, after having it stolen from him, and also give it as a reward for the quest.(you do not necessarily need the pickaxe for the achievement as you will be able to buy from Baldor later on the Stalhrim so you can skip this if you wish)

Now continue with your main quest here and while you will be completing the quest The fate of the Skaal certain people who are working there must not die from the Lurker attack so do a save before you use your shout to free them.Deor Woodcutter ,Fanari Strong-Voice and Baldor Iron-Shaper must not die else the quest A New Source of Stalhrim cannot be started.

Now to get the ability to craft stalhrim you will need to continue doing the main quest here, deliver the quest The fate of the Skaal and pick up The path of knowledge quest . Fast travel to another area and travel back to the Skaal Village to prom a conversation of 2 people talking about someone is missing, let the conversation finish, if you interrupt their conversation by talking to either one of them, it will stop their conversation and they will not speak again, thus making it impossible to get the quest **On comments people confirm that if you don't witness the two villagers arguing you can just talk to Deor the Woodcutter to begin the quest** ,after they finish talking the talk to them and you will find out that the town's blacksmith, Baldor Iron-Shaper is missing, thus starting the quest A New Source of Stalhrim. (If you do not get the conversation of the 2 people talking then go and talk to Fanari Strong she will give you a task to kill a Bandit, do this task and deliver it, then fast travel to somewhere else and back again to the Skaal village)

Baldor gets abducted by Thalmor who is trying to learn how to shape stalhrim. Once Baldor is rescued from the Abandoned Lodge and brought back to the Skaal Village, the stalhrim source map can be given to him and in return, he will teach you how to smith stalhrim weapons and armor.

Now Baldor Iron-Shaper can now sometimes sell stalhrim so you can just buy from him.
External image

For the ability to craft using Stalhrim you will need to have Ebony Smithing perk unlocked in the Smithing perk tree, that is 80 skill points in Smithing.

You will be able to craft a Stalhrim Dagger for 1 Stalhrim and 1 Leather Strips to get
your achievement with the least materials.

I don't know if this was different for you, however, I saved the three Skaal villagers (from Miraak's spell) you mentioned in 'The Fate Of The Skaal'. Only after finishing that quest did I got the 'Cleansing The Stones' quest.

Boldor often sells Stalhrim so you can skip the entire Pickaxe part. You only require the Ebony Smithing perk.

After completing A New Source of Stalhrim I spoke to him immediately afterwards and he had 3 pieces for sale.

Sorry for the confusion Rainleaf, I meant after completing his quest you don't need a pickaxe, only the perk and Boldor alive (obviously if he dies he can't sell you any Stahlrim). You still need to keep all 3 alive before then like your guide states.

@Horizon Supply Thank you for that and i also made it more clear in the guide that you do not need the pickaxe but if people want it they will know where to get one smile.

what's the easiest method to level up Smithing?

Make sure you activate the Warrior's Stone for a 20% XP boost, and get a good night's sleep for a 5% (if its in an Inn) or 10% XP boost (if its in your own bed).Go to Whiterun, buy iron ingots and leather/leather strips, wait 24/48 hours, then buy more and repeat if you have the cash and build up a stock to save you having to return to the shop as often. Then craft iron daggers and sell them all and repeat.

I've completed the main quest line for Dragonborn, freed all the stones but I don't remember Fanai Strong-Voice at any point in the Skaal Village. I can't find her anywhere and the blacksmith is still there. Does anyone know of places she can get stuck? I don't think she died.

At this point I've reverted to an old save which sucks because I spent a ton of time leveling my smithing to craft stahlrim. Love this game, but stuff like this is just maddening.

Fanari Strong-Voice spends most of her time in the Greathall, check there if you can find her.

Yeah sadly the way is made if any of them die ,even later by a random encounter, you will need to load a game and hope to find a save you have where they are all 3 alive.

By Rainleaf on 07 Sep 2017 06:45
But if you can find a save even if its takes you back 100 hours just do the quest and get the achievement and load back to the current save you have ,that way you will have the achievement and be back to the current save you have now.

Ok, I have updated the guide to show that if you don't witness the two villagers arguing you can just talk to Deor the Woodcutter to begin the quest rock.

I'm honestly disappointed with this shit in this game. I just did everything necessary for the trophy and the trophy just doesn't come I tried it over and over and the trophy doesn't come 😞

I can't believe that I'm gonna get 74/75 achievements all because this one random dude died without me even knowing about it.

Really disappointing that they made this the only way to craft these items

What the hell were they thinking when they made this quest? Why does this it require a random microscopic window of opportunity where you have to be at a certain place, at a certain time, with so many people alive? Like they couldn't have made it part of some main quest or have the the quest automatically initiate so you could at least acknowledge it? I'm forced to reboot an old save and just do the entire Solstheim questline again.

didn't have any issue keeping these people alive as I didn't even know they had to be alive to do it, nobody died from the lurker attacks I just targeted the lurker's immediately

Even if you do want to mine your own Stalhrim you still don't necessarily need to do the quest for Glover as you can find Ancient Nordic Pickaxe's in chests. I find one in the chest at Saering's Watch when I went to learn Bend Will which was before I could even get access to Glover. That said as it's guaranteed the quest is the way most will get one seeing as that's guaranteed.

Got the quest! Too get my smithing to level 80, I worked on my land until about level 52, then straight up iron daggers with some jewelry thrown in there.

Edit: Got the achievement. It's the second time I got it. The first time I got it was with console commands (Windows), so it's nice to be able to get it legit!

Oh it's long since been saved over, if he's dead it's because he didn't survive the initial fight at the stone. I roll multiple saves, but I don't keep them forever.

This really needs a missable tag.

When attempting the achievement, I followed all the steps, but did not find Deor and the other person argueing. I talked to Deor, who mentioned the abduction of the blacksmith, I then received the quest 'A New Source of Stalhrim' and finished it. I can now craft Stalhrim items.

I want to add for people who cannot activate their dialogue despite following this guide and can confirm both characters are alive:

While searching for Deor to verify that he's alive, I heard him say something about someone missing. I spoke to him, asked him what he meant, and it activated the side quest.

I can't make this quest progress. I've got the map from the ship the guy is back at the village and my instructions are to talk to him. But he won't communicate, just gives a default line of speech (like when you talk to a guard), and won't bring up any dialogue options even though he's got a big white arrow over his head.

I've tried going away and waiting for a couple of days, reloading the save I had at the ship and getting the map in 3 different ways (persuade, intimidate, fight) but he still won't talk to me.

Thanks heaps Rainleaf. Another thorough and comprehensive guide. I should've read your solution more carefully coz I had to go back to a previous save (no Doer). Just FYI for everyone else, after you rescue Baldor (and get the map) you can buy an Ancient Nordic Pickaxe from him. Keep up the great guides Rainleaf 😊👍🏽

Update, I started a second playthrough, powered through to the Fate of the Skall quest, saved before attempting, verified Deor was alive after the fight, saved and fast traveled to the Skall village.

THE SON OF A BITCH NEVER SHOWED UP! I waited a full day and Deor never made it back to the village.

So I reloaded the save from after the fight. Double checked that his ass was alive and fast traveled again. Same result. Reloaded. Walked his ass home like he's coming home from his first day of school. He's slow as hell and gets caught in a few places on the way. On little things, like the bridge that makes up something like a quarter of the whole walk back to the village.

I have come to suspect that he may not have died in my initial playthrough, but there is a glitch where he just doesn't make it back on his own. I recommend you make the walk back holding his stupid hand.

For this achievement, you must first learn to craft items from Stalhrim. Use the following commands:

  • coc DLC2SkaalVillage01
  • setstage DLC2SV02 30 (speak to Baldor Iron-Shaper here)
  • setstage DLC2SV02 200
  • player.addperk 000CB412
  • Player.AddItem 0402B06B 99
  • Player.AddItem 000800E4 99
You can now craft items and have a stock of materials to use. Go to the forge in the village to make something and unlock the achievement.

Stalhrim can only be mined with an ancient Nord pickaxe. Below I will give a list of deposits where you can get it. The pickaxe can be purchased from Baldor in the Skaal village.
1) Two veins of Stalhrim are located on the iceberg in the northernmost part of the island, not far from the Northern Pier.
2) Baldor has up to four pieces on sale with a 75% probability for each.
3) Source of Stalhrim (Location name)
4) Two veins in Voronya Skala - Mine. One of them is in a mini-location, which is located behind an impromptu waterfall.
5)Two veins in Gyldenhull Mound.
6)Two veins in Kolbjorn Mound.
7)In the sarcophagus in the Great Hall of Bencongerik.

To forge Stalhrim, the blacksmith level must be at least 80.

To get the quest New Source of Stalhrim, you need to come to the Skaal village and listen to the conversation between Fanari Strong Voice and Deor the Woodcutter, after which you will receive the quest.

I accidentally killed Fanari Strong Voice while clearing the first stone for the quest Fate of the Skaal.

If the same thing happened to you, then when you loaded up enough to complete the quest The Fate of the Skaals and I also cleared all the stones, when I returned to the Skaal village I received the quest New Source of Stalhrim.

For crafting, I bought 3 pieces of Stalhrim to make a bow from Baldor Iron Cut. If they are not there, skip 2 days for the store to update.

All this will take about an hour.

To receive the trophy you must:
1. Complete the Dragonborn DLC storyline, that is, complete its last task, “At the Top of Apocrypha.”
2. Return to the Skaal village and receive the task “A New Source of Stalhrim” from Deor the Woodcutter and complete it.
3. Collect Stalhrim (a few units are enough) using the Ancient Nordic Pickaxe (sold by Baldor).
4. Level up “Blacksmithing” to level 80 (upgrade “Ebony Armor”). You can find many ways to level up, but I’m more satisfied with leveling up for money from masters. (of course, if there are no problems with gold)
5. Forge any Stalhrim item at the forge.

PS: Do not kill while completing story and side quests! Deora the Woodcutter, Fanari Strong Voice and Baldora Iron Cut. When the first Lurker appeared, he accidentally killed the woodcutter, did not pay attention to it, and only noticed his loss at the very end. After loading from an old save, I lost an additional 5-10 hours to get the trophy.

After receiving Stalhrim, I was faced with the fact that my blacksmith skill was 35, but I didn’t know how to quickly level it up to 80. Therefore, he did so and went to Markrath to the Understone Fortress, where the jarl sits. From him we go right to the orc blacksmith named Mot gro-Bagol. He always sells silver bars that can be used to make rings and necklaces. During my travels, I have accumulated a lot of all kinds of precious stones, they also go into use for all sorts of expensive jewelry. Then we simply buy bars from him, then we spend two days, we buy again, we rewind again, we buy again, and so on a bunch of times. Then in the same room we make necklaces from these ingots. And again go to him to buy bars and spend two days. I raised it to level 80 in about an hour or so.
But the main thing is that you need to have about 50 thousand gold with you.

Attention, you can skip the update. In this case, you will need to roll back the “save”.
To get a certificate you will have to perform a number of actions.
1. Complete the quest “The Fate of the Skaals” where you need to destroy enchanted statues with a scream.
2. A few days after completing the quest “The Fate of the Skaal,” we return to the Skaal village and listen to the conversation between Fanari Strong Voice and Deor the Woodcutter, after which you will receive the quest. Where we have to find a forge.
Then it’s all about “there will be markers on the map”
After completing a series of tasks, you will need to chat with the blacksmith in the village and he will reveal the secret of the blacksmith. All you have to do is get the necessary resources for forging equipment “you can purchase from sellers or mine in caves yourself” and increase the forge level to level 80.
Notes: Some key characters who are needed to complete this quest in the story will die, so you should not be distracted by other tasks until you have done everything necessary for this achievement.
