How to unlock the War Hero achievement in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition - Definitive Guide

VERY IMPORTANT: TO MAKE SURE YOU DONT MISS THIS ACHIEVMENT, DO THIS BEFORE DOING THE PEASE TREATY FOR THE MAIN STORYLINE...

I spent hours for finding out why it wasnt unlocked for me, so i had to load back and start all over...

-To join the Legion travel to Solitude and enter Castle Dour and speak to General Tullis.
-To join the Stormcloaks travel to Windhelm and enter the Palace of the Kings and speak to Ulfric Stormcloak.

This achievement is for playing halfway through either side's story-line and capture a fortress. Which is either Fort Sungard or Fort Greenwall depending on who you side with.

If you've done Season Unending and want to know if you're boned or not, I think you can just check the map set up in the keep of your leader (with the blue and red pins). The map in Ulfric's place showed that Greenwall belonged to the Imperials, so I figured this would mean it'd pop up as a battle, and it did.

Absolutely sound and great advice. Thankfully, I only got half boned. Had already completed Season Unending. I firstly joined the Stormcloaks then read all the above. The maps in HQ I saw had both forts taken by the Stormcloaks, so unfortunately I had to join the Imperials to get this cheevo. After progressing thru their story, capturing Fort Greenwall came up 🥳 an hour later.
And yes it popped straight after the victory. Only wasted half hour... whew!
Thanks for the warnings people... much appreciated ✅🙏🏽

Not sure if there's been an update to make this not missable, or if I just got lucky - but I did everything this guide and comments said NOT to do to avoid missing this achievement, and I was still able to complete it without any real problems. The only buggy thing was in the final push for one of the capital cities, the quest marker wouldn't move from the military camp. I went to the city anyway and it prompted the quest to continue.

The quest Season Unending may make it impossible to get the War Hero achievement. You may want to wait until you've completed The Battle for Fort Greenwall (Imperial) or The Battle for Fort Sungard (Stormcloaks) in order to be sure you get this achievement.
If you complete this quest before completing the Civil War quest line, it is safest to have the Rift (Riften) and the Reach (Markarth) controlled by opposing factions. Ensuring the Imperials take Riften and the Stormcloaks take Markarth will mean that one of the holds is always available to take by your chosen faction and the it will unlock without an issue from either side.

I completed the main quest and still got the war hero achievement. It popped up later when I arrived at the Haafingar Stormcloak Camp.

MAKE SURE to save your game before liberating the fort. This took me 2 tries to unlock. It simply did not pop the first time. Luckily I had a save.

This issue is also present on the 360 version of the game.

I tried twice and got nothing.

Edit: I tried switching sides (reloaded to just before I started the Civil War questline), and that didn't even work. I have not don't the peace treaty. Anyone have a workaround? angry

UPDATE: I turned the game off (I had given up trying to get the achievement) to watch TV, and my phone notified me that I got the achievement. clap

Upon completion of the quest when you are asked to return to Ulfric, it may not let you continue, and the normal dialog will appear. In addition, the fast-travel markers will be disabled and the battle music may still be running.

- If not in or near Whiterun, fast-travel to Pelagia Farm and walk into the city from there.
- If the battle music is still running, go to Dragonsreach and wait until it completes. The completion of the battle music also completes the Battle for Whiterun quest properly and solves most issues with the Civil War questline.
- If Whiterun's markers are still disabled, walk back out of the city gates, following the path towards the stables until the markers reappear.

The first one worked for me.

Per UESP: "There is an alternative method to obtaining this achievement as well as this quest, but you have to join the Stormcloaks in order for this to work. First, finish the quest Joining the Stormcloaks, but do not start the quest The Jagged Crown. Without that quest being active, you can then schedule the peace conference. Because you are technically allied with the Stormcloaks, Tullius will make the opening demand for Riften. When Ulfric demands something in return, give him Morthal rather than Markarth. This will allow the Reach to remain open for Stormcloak invasion when you resume the Civil War quest."

I can validate that getting up to "Take the Oath" for the Joining the Stormcloaks quest, then getting to the step of "Talk to Ulfric Stormcloak" in Season Unending, I took the oath, exited the chat as soon as he said I was a Stormcloak now, and ran over to Ulfric and convinced him to go to the meeting and the Empire made the first demand.

Everything else with his/hers guide is fine, however if you are like me and want to make sure that you won't miss anything by writing it down. The mission the person is referring to is called Season Unending, this mission is at the start of Act III or after the mission Alduin's Bane the last mission of Act II. I say this because that is where the peace treaty takes place and isn't actually a mission called Peace Treaty.
Personally I'd recommend not doing Alduin's Bane just in case and to make sure you cover yourself, however each their own. As I said, there isn't anything else wrong with their guide, just wanted to help fellow gamers out. Good luck on your quest Dovahkiin.

Technically it is a branch quest off of The Fallen, because using Dragonreach requires a truce which then gets marked as its own quest

I'm struggling to figure out this achievement. I tried multiple times on both sides and got nothing. But I already had Alduin's Bane completed (not the peace treaty). So I tried doing what you suggested and loaded a file to back before I finished Alduin's Wall. That STILL didn't work! That was gonna be the first time I got every achievement in this game legit. The only time I got 100% was on PC using console commands. I've never got 100% on console. I'm extremely disappointed.

UPDATE: I turned the game off (I had given up trying to get the achievement) to watch TV, and my phone notified me that I got the achievement. clap

This achievement is no longer missable, as far as I can tell. If you join the Stormcloaks and award Markarth to them during the peace treaty (thus skipping Fort Sungard), you'll eventually have to go fight for Fort Greenwall and get the achievement there. This should work identically if you join the Imperials.

As of writing this response the achievement is still missable even if you haven't started the peace treaty main mission. On my main character I have only completed the the first story related mission Dragon rising and decided to side with the Stormcloaks, upon capturing Fort Sungard I wasn't awarded the achievement and as a result had to make a new save in which to be safe, sided with the Imperials. Again I simply completed Dragon rising and made my way through the civil war missions until I had to capture Fort Greenwall. This time upon completion it awarded the achievement.

So TLDR; The achievement can still bug out and not unlock even if you haven't had the Imperial and Stormcloaks form the peace treaty with the Greybeards.

As for what causes it I'll update this guide if a cause is a root cause it found (feel free to respond if you find it also).

This achievement is best done on a "fresh" save file after having completed Unbound. You should have a hard save there if you followed my suggestion in the Road Map.

First, you'll need to have the first three main quests completed. Do this with the following commands: setstage mq101 900, setstage mq102 160, setstage mq103 190 (entering each of these individually of course). Then use "coc whiterundragonsreach" to speak to Jarl Blagruuf to begin this quest chain. From here, do the following:

  • "setstage mq104 90"
  • speak to Jarl Balgruuf
  • "setstage cw01a 200"
  • "coc solitudecastledour"
  • speak to Legate Rikke
  • "setstage cw02a 200"
  • "coc whiterundragonsreach"
  • speak to Jarl Balgruuf
  • "setstage cw03 150"
  • speak to Jarl Balgruuf
  • "coc windhelmorigin"
  • speak to Jarl Stormcloak
  • "coc whiterundragonsreach"
  • Talk to Legate Quentin
  • "setstage cwsiegeobj 9000"
  • "coc solitudecastledour"
  • Talk to the General
  • coc militarycamppaleimperial"
  • Talk to Legate Rikke
  • "setstage cwmission03 30"
  • Talk to Legate Rikke
  • "coc dawnstarexterior01"
  • Talk to Frokmar Banner-Torn in The White Hall
  • "coc militarycamppaleimperial"
  • Talk to Legate Rikke
  • "setstage cwfortsiegefort 9000"
  • "coc solitudecastledour"
  • Talk to the General
  • "coc militarycampriftimperial"
  • Talk to Legate Rikke
  • "setstage cwmission07 90"
  • "coc riverwood"
  • Talk to Hadvar
  • "coc militarycampriftimperial"
  • Talk to Legate Rikke
  • "setstage cwfortsiegefort 9000"
The achievement should unlock after this final console command. Be sure when speaking to each person during this chain of events that you have moved the questline forward. Sometimes you need to exhaust more than one line of dialogue and report that you have finished their task to move to the next step before you can then skip forward again.

I tried to get this achievement a number of different ways with less steps, but it nevery worked properly. Thanks to VidGamiac on TA for these steps which worked first try!

In order not to miss this trophy, you need to carefully choose your strategy:
1) you complete the quests of the civil war before the quest of the main storyline “Endless Time”, and then you definitely won’t miss the trophy;
2) in the “Endless Time” quest, strictly monitor who will receive which districts, and which side of the conflict you will choose in the future.

Let me explain in more detail: if you decide to play as the empire, you will be given the quest “Battle for Fort Greenwall.” This means that after negotiations, Greenwall, located in the Rift district (Riften), should be behind the Stormcloaks.
If you decide to play as the Stormcloaks, you will be given the quest “The Battle for Fort Sungard.” This means that after negotiations, Sangard, located in the Reach district (Markarth), should be behind the empire.

It turned out to be even simpler.

1. We go through the story until the quest “The Path of the Voice” (3rd or 4th quest in the game)
2. We go to Windhelm (yes, the path is not close)
3. We speak with their king and join them.
4. Complete the Brotherhood quest chain until the trophy drops.
5. If you complete the chain to the very end, there will be another trophy (silver, not skippable)

This is if you get a trophy for the Brotherhood of the Storm. I haven't played for the Empire.

This is a quest for the Legion or the Stormcloaks, depending on which side you chose.

The previous hint is incorrect, during the negotiations, during the choice of what the Storm Brothers should give, we choose Riften, not Winterhold, then Fort Greenwall goes to the Imperials and after finishing the plot and entering the civil war on the side of the Storm Brothers, capture Fort Greenwald and receive the trophy.

If you go through a chain of quests about the war after the plot, and during negotiations give Markarth to the Storm Brothers, then later playing as the Storm Brothers you will not be able to capture the desired fort, thereby you can miss the trophy. So if it comes to negotiations on high Hrothgar, make a preliminary save of the game

The trophy is given for capturing fort Sangard or Greenwold in the quests of the same name "capture the fort...". with these quests a bug is possible Sangard is responsible for the possession of the limit, Galmar stone fist if you play as the Storm Brothers may simply not give it to you, it will repeat the same thing Well, this happened to me with the subquest “seize possession of Hjalmark”, fortunately the opportunity arose to attack Solitude and I did not roll back the game to an early save. I was not at the negotiations at all, I received the trophy precisely after the capture of Sangard, the quests for comrades-in-arms, assassins, and other factions were completed, the plot was not completed, for the sake of interest I googled what negotiations give and how, with the help of them, you can get a trophy because it is decided there which territories are transferred to whom, but in reality this is just a method... In general, carefully follow the line of quests and make a save before capturing any possession and, just in case, bypass these forts before starting the task
