How to unlock the Soul Tear achievement in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition - Definitive Guide

EDIT: This is part of the Dawnguard quest line, the actual mission where you can start learning Soul Tear is "Beyond Death"

Each time you summon Durneviir you will get give one word to the "Soul Tear" shout. So you will need to summon him 3 times. The shout takes 300 seconds to recharge, so 5 minutes; just wait an hour and summon him again ( Due to a message I need to specify waiting using the in-game "Wait" feature) . Try summon him in a wide open area so it doesn't glitch, sometimes I found him to spawn and insta-die.

You do need the third level of "Summon Durneviir" so you will need to spend at least 3 souls on unlocking all 3 levels. NOTE: You don't need to unlock any of the shouts for Soul Tear using Dragon souls. Simply having learned them is enough.

EDIT 2: Make sure you aim the shout at the ground to summon him. You will need some clear space within which to summon Durneviir. The planes outside Whiterun are ideal, although I did it out the front of Castle Volikhar

The quest where you travel to the Soul Cairn is called Beyond Death and is around two-thirds of the way into the main quests of Dawnguard.

Is that something you want me to mention in the guide?

I had a hard time with this. Kinda never knew that I had to use the shout at the ground to actually summon him.

After the first battle, when I was leaving The Boneyard, when I saw him on the perch, I attacked and killed him. Make sure that you do not kill him, let him talk to you, or it makes the achievement unattainable.

Sneaky - I'm pretty sure it's just called Summon Durneviir.

What idiot thought you meant wait an hour in real time?
As soon as I read it I knew what you meant.

I dont have the shout and I'm pretty sure that I killed him, dozens of ingame hours ago so I guess I'm screwed for this one.

I have an early save but I don't fancy playing all the way through the Dawnguard quests again just for this. That whole Soul Cairn section was interminably dull.

I have all three words unlocked and have used the shout but no achievement. I even got the words of power achievement unlocking all 3 words.

Stupid question, but can you earn this achievement if you never did the mission that spawns dragons in the world? Aka I have no dragons and no souls.

Been a very long time, but I assume no. I recall you needing to use a Dragon soul to be able to unlock the word for use once you found it in the world. Assume no, but someone else may know more.

You could still find all the words and progress the main story to spawn dragons, then just use the souls as soon as you get them

One item to add here. I did this a few times and the achievement would not pop after learning the 3rd word. I found that even though the game was showing me learning the second word, Dunheviir would vanish the moment he appeared. To fix this, I went back to a save prior to learning any of the words and fast travelled to the plains outside of Whiterun. Call Dunheviir once to learn the first word, then save, skip 24 hours ahead and move a short distance to another area of the plains. Make sure that you don't see any dragons in the air or ground before calling him again. If he vanishes right away, go back to your save. If he gives the second word and flies off, save, forward 24 hours, move to another area of the plains outside Whiterun, and do it again. Once he was done with the third word and flew off, the achievement popped. Good luck! If this happened to you, hopefully you still have a save after you met Dunheviir but before you learned the words without getting the achievement.

You must summon the undead dragon Durnehviir three times to learn all three words of Soul Tear.

Rather than doing all the boring gameplay content (yes I'm kidding don't worry) we can use CCs instead.

- Go to an open outdoor area - a quick one is "coc whiterun".
- First learn the following shout Summon Durnehviir.
- "player.teachword 020030D4" then "player.teachword 020030D6" then "player.teachword 020030D7".
- Go into your Magic tab, then spend 3 dragon souls to Unlock the full use of Summon Durnehviir.
- If you don't have any dragon souls, use this 3 times first - "player.modav dragonsouls 1".

- Now equip the Summon Durnehviir shout and aim at the ground in front of you.
- Use your shout at full power (hold Z on keyboard), the dragon appears, teaching word 1 of Soul Tear.
- Now wait 1 hr (T on keyboard), then summon him again to learn word 2.
- Now wait 1 hr (T on keyboard), then summon him again to learn word 3.
- The achievement should unlock.

To use CCs (console commands) press ~ on your keyboard, type the command you want, then press enter.
Some good CCs:

If you're having trouble, don't forget to aim your shout at the ground.

I've done the teachword CC's, but the modav shouts won't give me shouts. is there a workaround for that?

I was having trouble with getting the shout to work, in order to summon Durneviir you need to direct the shout at the ground out in front of you.

You could have just left this as a comment in the other solution.

You need to use the shout three times to summon the dragon Durnevir from the Cairn of Souls. Each time he will teach you one new word.

In order to summon Durnevir, you must first activate all three words from the cry (Summon Durnevir) with the help of the souls of three killed dragons (any). Just screaming at the sky won't work, screaming just won't work! You need to find a surface where, in principle, a dragon can land, and shout into the ground at this place, since Durnevir appears precisely on the ground!

Main:
after you leave the Burial Ground in the Cairn of Souls, Durnevir will be waiting for you. Under no circumstances should you shoot pre-emptively, you need to talk to him!
I killed him and then never found him in Cairn.

magic must be pumped up to 300, otherwise the dragon will not be summoned
