How to unlock the One with the Shadows achievement in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition - Definitive Guide

JOINING
To join the Thieves Guild, travel to Riften and come into contact with Brynjolf, who can be found at the market stalls during the day, or the Bee and Barb tavern during the night. Brynjolf will approach you and question your wealth before inviting you to help him with a little plot. This begins the first quest, A Chance Arrangement, in which you must steal a ring and plant it on another person.

After joining there are a few requirements before you can unlock this Achievement. These include completing the Main Quest, Tonilias Two Misc Quests and all 4 Special Jobs.

MAIN QUESTS
The first requirement is completing the main Quest line:

A Chance Arrangement

Taking Care of Business

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special EditionTaking Care of BusinessThe Taking Care of Business achievement in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition worth 15 pointsJoin the Thieves Guild

Loud and Clear

Dampened Spirits

Scoundrel's Folly

Speaking With Silence

Hard Answers

The Pursuit

Trinity Restored

Blindsighted

Darkness Returns

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special EditionDarkness ReturnsThe Darkness Returns achievement in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition worth 20 pointsComplete "Darkness Returns"

MISCELLANEOUS QUEST
Tonilia will also occasionally have some Miscellaneous quests. You should complete these to avoid any issues, specifically after completing Scoundrel's Folly, as you will be offered the Miscellaneous quest: Speak to Tonilia about exchanging a piece of armor.

If you do not complete this quest, she will not talk to you about any other quests, including giving you Guild Master Armor and blocking you from progressing later.

You must keep at least one piece of Guild Armor to upgrade it, if you already got rid of all your Armor, you can find pieces near the beds in The Ragged Flagon - Cistern area, or more specifically in the North East Training Area, also in the Cistern.

SPECIAL JOBS
The other requirement is completing all 4 Special Jobs (otherwise known as City Influence Quests).

After joining the Guild, Delvin and Vex will offer you unlimited radiant quests, known as "Jobs".

You must complete five jobs in one region (Whiterun, Windhelm, Makarth or Solitude) to unlock that regions Special Job (Note: Riften is not required). In total you would be completing 20 of these jobs across the 4 regions.

The easiest jobs to complete in my opinion are Numbers and Shill. For efficiency you can receive a job from Delvin and Vex at the same time, completing them both before returning to minimise travel. Delvin and Vex can give you details about the other kinds of jobs if you wish to learn more.

If you receive a quest for a region you don't require (such as Riften or for an area you have already done 5 jobs and the Special Job) you can simply just talk to the quest giver again and choose to quit the job, and then receive a new one.

After completing 5 jobs in the same region, Delvin will talk to you about a "Special Job". The 4 required Special Jobs are for the Major Holds of Skyrim:

Imitation Amnesty in Whiterun

Summerset Shadows in Windhelm

Silver Lining in Markarth

The Dainty Sload in Solitude

MISCELLANEOUS QUEST
The other Miscellaneous quest from Tonilia should also be completed Deliver Moon Sugar to Ri'saad, which is given after completing three special jobs for the Guild.

ADDITIONAL INFO
You can complete these in any order you wish, I finished all 4 Special Jobs before completing the Main Quest. I also upgraded my armor after completing the Main Quest.

BECOMING GUILD MASTER
After all these requirements are done, speak to Brynjolf and a new quest should start called Under New Management. Complete the ceremony, then talk to Brynjolf again. He will tell you to retrieve your Guild Leader Armor from Tonilia (Note: For this step you do not require to already have a piece of Guild Armor).

Upon receiving your Master Guild Armor the achievement should pop!

The miscellaneous "Deliver Moon Sugar to Ri'saad" quest is not required to get this achievement. I completed the 4 special jobs, came back after the fourth one, became leader, got my armor (achievement popped), then was offered the quest.

I mention that Misc Quest should be completed since if you have received it earlier, you will not be able to continue the final parts of the achievement until you remove it from your quest log.

I'm having trouble with this right now, so I'm gonna leave a piece of advice: Try to do these quests before doing the Civil War stuff between the Imperials and Stormcloaks. If you do them after, sometimes Vex will give you quests to do in Whiterun in Heimskr's house, a house that is destroyed in the attack on Whiterun, regardless of which side you're on. You can't complete them.

Aviator, if they give you quests you can’t complete for the small jobs, you can request To quit and Ask for another, there is no penalty for it

I had the same problem as godsandm0nsters but on Markarth. I just accepted the quest from Lisbet in Arnleif and Sons Trading Company, came back to Delvin and the first job he gave me was for Markarth

Just some advice in case anyone ends up in the same situation as me. Towards the end of the questline doing the numbers and shill jobs I was getting no jobs for Solitude at all. I completed the special jobs in the other three holds but still didn’t get a single job for Solitude. I travelled to Solitude and there was a speech that Ulfric makes following the end of the civil war questline that I obviously had skipped (had to go into the castle to get Ulfric to come out and make the speech). After listening to the whole speech I travelled back to the Thieves Guild and the first job Delvin gave me was for Solitude.

Before we start I want to point out this should be done after completing the main story line of the thieves guild.

You need to do quests for both Delvin and Vex. What you want to do is do bedlam and sweep make sure that both the quests are in a town that you haven't done a special quest that gains influence for the thieves guild. This is simple with the shadowcloak ability. Make sure that you have the sweep quest marked to follow and not the bedlam one. To make sure they are in the same town just keep quitting the quest until they are in the same town. Go break into the the house and start stealing the items you need to steal. By stealing two of the items you will finish the bedlam quest go and steal the third to finish the sweep quest. Go return the quests and you will then be asked to start a special quest.

Go complete the special quest then rinse repeat. The four towns you need to gain influence are Riften, Markath, Whiterun, and Solitude. Also remember if you have done a special quest in that town don't go and do any side quests for that town its kind of a waste of time.

Edit: Its not Riften because you get that quest from Maven early on in the thieves guild its Windhelm. So Sorry for the confusion. :)

The guide by Horizon is so much better. Why does this one have 88 positive votes? It needs to be removed in favor of the other guide.

That may be true. But this guide helped me to get the achievement. And I got all the information I needed without too many spoilers. Therefor thumbs up from me.

There's a glitch to not getting any Solitude quests. If you did the Civil War questline first, you MUST remember to go back to either Castle Dour or the other ending castle to listen to the speech they will shout. Once that's done, the quest completes 100%. Then you'll get the jobs for the specific town.

Did you have to redo all the City's for Vex and Delvin after you completed darkness returns once you figured out that was the problem?

Good guide. It's worth mentioning that if you kept hold of the Daedric lockpick instead of completing the "Darkness Returns" mission and give it back. Brynjolf won't appear in the Thieves Guild you till you do it and therefore you can't be promoted to Leader of the Thieves Guild. Hope this helps anyone worried about it like I have been all day whilst trying to get this and couldn't get the "Under New Management" mission to start.

Instead of adding another paragraph explaning the correction of the original description... just edit the original description! That puts us reading both the incorrect and correct guide, causing the confusion.

This is done by completing the quest

In order to unlock the quest, you must finish the quests

In order to get these quests, you must complete 5 jobs for Vex or Delvin in each of the 4 major holds, Whiterun, Markarth, Windhelm, and Solitude. After the 5 jobs are complete in the hold then the special job, named above, will appear

As such, the completion of this achievement begins after completing the Thieves Guild storyline.
Its essence is to complete small tasks received from Vex and Delvin Mallory (who live in a violent flask around the clock) with subsequent profit in the form of strengthening the power of the guild in the largest cities of Skyrim.
NPC tasks will be given to complete in all corners of Skyrim and can even be thrown at Raven Rock, but we are only interested in 4 cities (and tasks in them, respectively): Solitude, Whiterun, Markarth and Windhelm . After completing 5 minor quests in one of the cities we will be given a special task in this city. And so 4 times (1 side for 5 small ones) according to the number of cities stated above. After completing the quartet, you will receive the task “Change of Power”, strengthen yourself at the head of the guild, receive the set of the head of the guild, access to new buyers of stolen goods and 4 new vendors in the violent flask. To speed up the process, take tasks from both Vex and Mallory, but do not forget to cancel the task if it falls on a city that we do not need, or on a city in which the guild has already strengthened itself (a special task has been completed).

In my opinion, the fastest way is to take the “digits” task from Delvin. Signing records is very simple and fast - and 100% guaranteed)

If you sold the guild armor, it’s in the tank at the very top of the closet in the training room, this is enough to pass the quest

Perhaps there will be people who, like me, will complete 4 special tasks before completing the final quest of the Thieves Guild (I don’t want to part with the key). So, the fact is that this achievement can only be completed after completing the Thieves Guild storyline. Did you do it like I did? Let's go finish the Guild's quests and get a trophy.

Before each main quest, I advise you to take two side quests from Delvin and Vex to save time, most importantly, take those side quests that need to be completed only in Windhelm, Markarth, Whiterun and Solitude

After you have made friends with the Guild and Nocturnal, simply complete the additional tasks of Vex and Delvin, especially focus on Delvin, his tasks are very easy and fast. I also advise you to focus on four cities - Whiterun, Windhelm, Markarth and Solitude, since these are places where the Guild has not yet been strengthened. As a result, after completing 5 small tasks in each city, you will receive a special task, and after completing that, you will finish strengthening . If the task falls on other places in Skyrim, simply cancel them.
