How to unlock the Digging It! achievement in The Escapists - Definitive Guide
Digging It! - Clear a total of 50 tiles using the shovel.LIE
*** This achievement has been patched so that digging underground does count towards the achievement. ***
Ok first we need to clarify a couple of things. You don't have to use a shovel, anything that digs is fine. The other thing to note is when it says 50 tiles it doesn't mean clearing dirt underground which it sounds like. What counts towards the achievement is digging a complete hole from the surface to underground or vice-versa. Because of this I only had about 10 by the time I had escaped every prison, so you are most likely going to want to grind this out as quick as you can.
The best way to do this quickly and efficiently is to keep it in mind while you are playing normally. Get a Sturdy Pickaxe or Sturdy Shovel ready and leave it in your desk until you go to sleep and can save. Now as soon as you wake up dig a complete hole which should take 4 interactions with the sturdy pickaxe. Don't go underground just keep digging holes until you are either caught or your pickaxe or shovel dies and then load your save. Repeat, repeat, repeat (No bloody rinsing we are not washing our hair we are playing games!!!!)
As an example I loaded up my last save on San Pancho and immediately ran to my tunnel where I had left my Pickaxe and just dug upwards until it broke. The place went into lock down because I had missed the morning roll-call but it doesn't matter. Now I would get 3 holes every time but if you set this up and have a brand new sturdy pick axe or shovel saved in your inventory, I'm sure you could get a lot more.
Anyway have fun digging!
You don't specifically have to use the Sturdy Pickaxe or Shovel but they are the quickest. You could also use a Trowel, Spoon or any lesser version of the Pickaxe or Shovel.
Tool Handle = Timber + File
Flimsy Pickaxe = Tool handle + Crowbar + Duct tape
Lightweight Pickaxe = Flimsy Pickaxe + Timber + Duct Tape
Sturdy Pickaxe = Lightweight Pickaxe + Timber + Duct Tape
Flimsy Shovel = Tool Handle + Metal + Duct Tape
Lightweight Shovel = Flimsy Shovel + Metal + Duct Tape
Sturdy Shovel = Lightweight Shovel + Metal + Duct Tape

May have been patched? I got it during my San poncho escape, and had hardly dug before that. Dug about ten times up or down, but about fifty across may have been accurate.
I defo didn't do fifty up/down holes.

Thanks for the update. I did this while tracking the achievement on the side of my screen so I could see it would definitely not go up from going across. If anyone can confirm their achievement tracker is going up while digging across, please let me know and i'll change this solution.

If you want to, you can get just run through the tutorial, dig the 2 spots at the end, then reload your save.
Takes 25 runthroughs that are about 1-2 minutes each, so about a 25-50 minute achievement if you choose to take this route

Honestly, this is what I was thinking of doing. But that *seemingly simple* route actually looks like it takes longer than grinding in-game for real.
Thumbs up for doing the math for me.

A nice place to do this is on the computer room in the first prison. Guards don't go there so you can dig quietly. Try to use a sturdy pickaxe, dig a hole and go underground. You can clean a tile with only 2 hits. When the pickaxe breaks, just reload your save and repeat the process.
A single dig you make at the end of the tutorial level also counts. So if you are super lazy and have an hour or so - go for it.
For this trophy you must dig a total of 50 spaces using the Shovel items. This will likely unlock naturally if you follow the recommended escape methods specified in this Guide, because you will be digging out of Prison 3 - Shankton State Pen and Prison 5 - San Pancho. The best item to dig with is the Sturdy Shovel as it has the highest amount of durability. If you don't unlock this trophy before escaping from Prison 5 then simply reload the save from that prison and continue digging in the tunnel you used to escape, until the trophy unlocks.
