How to unlock the Master of Unlocking achievement in The Evil Within - Definitive Guide

The guide is finally finished. Huge thanks to slushiaddict, funkym0nkey77, Urban Legxnd, L0cke89, CyberneticHFX, CRO5573Y, Priit3 and Astaroth1337 for their help in the comments!. toast

Throughout the game you will periodically find rooms which contain mirrors that allow you to transport to the game's safe zone. These rooms are easy to find, they are usually directly in your path and you can hear the song Clair De Lune playing from within them (it gets louder the closer you are). On one of your first visits to the safe area the nurse will lead you to a back room, with 2 walls covered in lockers. These lockers contain random items that will help you; health syringes, more ammo, 5000 upgrade gel etc. To open them you have to find keys within the game, which are hidden inside small breakable statues or (annoyingly) inside the lockers. The following is a list of the keys I have currently found:

* IMPORTANT NOTE* -
If you die and return to checkpoint, any keys (or collectibles) you gathered WILL NOT BE SAVED. Make sure you get them again!

Chapter 1:

- As far as I am aware there are no keys in this chapter.

Chapter 2:

- While following Leslie he will run away into the dark, shortly after this you will come to a gate with a fire nearby. The statue is on a wall to the left of this gate.
-Towards the end of the level there is a house on the right pathway. There is a room blocked by three boards, shotgun these away and burn the enemy on the floor. The key is in a box on the table.

Chapter 3:

- There is a watchtower in the village with flash bolts and EXP at the top. The statue is halfway up the tower. Shoot it and the key will drop to the bottom of the ladder.
- In the barn with the boss, climb the ladders up to the very top floor. This leads to a small room with EXP and a key statue.
- There is a statue on top of a wall to the left of where the sniper enemy spawns. You need to shoot it to drop the key.
- Go stand where the sniper enemy spawned, then look to your left. There is a statue hanging in some cables stretched between the buildings you need to shoot down.

Chapter 4:

- In the building where you get the "Home is where the hospice is" achievement, the key is inside the dead body. You have to interact with the body and cut it open to claim the key.
- Once you drop into the pool of blood you will see a lever to your left. Pull it once and a corpse will fall down the chute, pull it again to drop a statue.

Chapter 5:

- After you drop down to the lower floor of the asylum you will see a rat with a statue on its back. Shoot the statue to get the key.
- After finding Kidman in the water tank you will have to leave Joseph while you go to find the release mechanism. You will pass cells full of enemies on your way there. The statue is in the third cell on your right. shoot the lock to get in.
- After the encounter with Laura where you discover she hates fire, go back into the room where she spawned and open the cabinet in the back right. A crow will fly out with the statue on its back. You can melee as the door opens if you're quick, failing that you can shoot it as the crow flies around the room.

Chapter 6:

- Towards the start of this chapter you will be running down a hill, on your left is a half demolished house with a corpse hanging in a window. Either burn the body or push it aside to reveal the statue behind it.
- In the area you are being shot at by harpoon Gatling guns, there is a statue on the top of the building the gun nests are hanging from. Shoot the statue with your sniper and the key will drop to the ground in front of the door the sadist comes through.
- Once you reach the market area, stick to the right hand side and keep going until you spot a hole in the wall you can crouch through (it should be near the stall covered in meat) then turn left to find the statue at the end. The hole in the wall is covered by boxes you can break, making it somewhat hard to see.
- In the room where you have to lay sacrifices on the altars, there are hanging bodies on chains to the left. After a while they will move, and one of them has a statue on it. Melee when it comes into view.

Chapter 7:

- The first key is right in your path. After you remove a piece from a picture on the wall, a doorway will open. The key is in a safe on the table in this room.

*Once you reach the area where you place the stone into the carving, two doors will open. Go LEFT first. This allows you to turn off the toxic gas that would otherwise be blocking a key in the right hand area.*

- After turning off the gas, head right. In the corner of the first room there is a lever, pulling it will drop a spike trap. Ride it back up to find the statue on a pillar in the corner.
- After this room you will enter a room that has a spike trap in the centre, and a door that must be opened by a wheel. When you interact from the wheel a group of enemies will emerge from a previously locked door. After killing them head into the room they spawned from and (assuming you turned off the gas) go down the stairs to find the statue you probably saw through the railings when you went left.
- Back in the room where you were ambushed while on the wheel, immediately after you open the gate head into the room and go right to find another lever activating a spike trap you must ride up. There is a small room on the way up which contains the key. Be careful with this one as there are more spikes on the roof that will kill you if you aren't fast enough.

Chapter 8:

- The first statue is halfway up the chain of the first gate you need to open, you have to shoot it down, however this will negate the mission specific achievement of this chapter. Sorry. roll
- Once you drop into the water, stick to the right hand side, the statue is in an indent in the wall.
- Upon meeting the doctor in a large circular room, there will be a doorway blocked by debris. You can just see a statue sticking out of the top of a pipe. Shoot it and the key will slide to the bottom where it can be picked up.

Chapter 9:

- In the branches of a tree to the right of the entrance to the mansion.
- On the top of the first set of shelves to your left after entering the brain surgery room accessed through the dining room.
- In the room you were headed towards when the grinder trap activated in the mansion, on a desk directly to your left as you enter.
- In the room where the lower dial is obtained, go into the middle of the room and look up above the doorway. The statue is above you propped on the roof.
- As you are escaping the barn, burn the haystack to the right of the window to reveal the statue.

Chapter 10:

- Once you return to the room you started in after activating the power the statue is visible in a small room. Shoot the statue before going in and don't bother trying to get the exp. There is a timed spike trap in this room and you don't have long.
- After going down the ladder and disabling the trap, there is a door immediately to your left, the statue is behind some breakable boxes.
- After killing the large monster (I don't know its official name but believe me you'll know it when you see it) in the room with the spinning blades, there will be a heated plate repeatedly slamming into the wall next to the exit. Crouch under it while it is extended to find a statue.
- After (finally) killing Laura, head right before getting into the lift. (Elevator if you're american I suppose) to find the statue.

Chapter 11:

- On one of the horses on a carousel at the beginning of the level. Shoot it down and stand at the edge to pick it up as it passes.
- After you fall into the water you will see the statue floating, push it towards the nearby car so you can pick it up.
- After the trolley ride you enter a broken building and then cross over into another. In this building there is a vending machine, keep activating it until the statue drops.
- Fight off the ambush after saving Kidman, then open the lift (again, elevator if you're american. Wouldn't want to be biased) to the left of the staircase to find the statue.
- After escaping the gas filled mannequin factory, your camera will zoom in on joseph. Above and slightly left of there is a crane with the final statue of this chapter hanging from it. Shoot it down from here and then pick it up just after crossing over the large gap.

Chapter 12:

There are no keys in this chapter.

Chapter 13:

- After the keeper appears again downstairs in the apartment, look up from where he spawned to a hole in the ceiling where the statue is located. (If you missed the keeper spawn, it's left then right then left again from the bottom of the staircase.
- After you get dragged into the save room, exit and continue with the level. you should turn into a room on your right and drop through a hole. Turn tight again to find a statue on top of a large crate.
- After finding Joseph and dealing with Ruvik's shit in the kitchen, look to your left to find the statue on a table.
- Once you've dealt with the keeper you will escape down a dumb waiter. There is another one next to you after you exit, which has a statue inside it.

Chapter 14:

- Right at the start after going down some stairs, look out for a hanging sign for the toilets. Look up and to the left from this sign to see the statue in a hole in the ceiling.
- You will enter a train with the end ripped off. Seb will look into the distance and say something like "there must be a way to get over there" immediately after this you will be attacked by an enemy and enter another train. Turn right to find the statue in the end of this train in the window.
- In the sewer, after a creepy tentacle snatches an enemy away a la dead space, continue until you reach a tunnel with a read light at the far end. On the right of this tunnel is a path blocked by infected tissue you must burn to reach a statue.
- Assuming you fully connected the electrics, when you turn the generator on after killing the boss, an infected wall will be removed revealing a space to the right containing a statue.
- Before climbing onto the crashed train, on top of a pile of rubble next to it.

Chapter 15:

Once again, no keys!

This should be all of them! Let me know if you collect these and still aren't finished!

It's random. I had to quit and reload due to a glitch after opening a locker, when I opened the exact same one again I got something different.
Also I've found keys in the lockers too. Hopefully it's coded to give the keys out sooner or you could end up with the last keys you need being in a locker. facepalm

Just checked after reloading. It is random. Even trying out a few safes and then reloading to a save right before will change the content of the lockers.

I hope that it at least gives you the key before running out. Would suck to be stuck at 2 locked doors because you didn't get the random key. I'm also not sure if there are any more than the one I've found.

If you found one key on its own in a locker there are more. I've only had one locker give me keys, but it gave out two. Honestly I think there may be more. I only have 12 lockers left to open but I'm really running out of places to look for keys in the game. shock

As it happens I do have those ones, the guide is being updated right now.
But keep the comments coming, I still have half a wall to open so there's a fair few I've missed somewhere! facepalm

There are no small statues/keys in Chapter 1 to be found. On 9x3 locker grid, there I have recovered two keys from the inside of the seventh locker of the top row. Keep going for it - load game progress to trail and error, until you recover a key/two keys, if you have only about ten locked lockers remaining to unlock, and you should be on your save path, relatively.

In the 3rd chapter there is a 4th key hanging from a powerline near where the gate is. If you go to the balcony where the sniper was and look left it's right there. Not to be confused with the statue on the wall near the sniper

I'll have to check when I get on to NG+ tonight, that might have been the one I was referring to albeit you described the location much better. I'm not 100% sure but it just seems weird to me that so many keys would be so close. Either way I'll put it in the guide when I update. If it's a new key brilliant, if it's the one I meant I really need to explain it more clearly. Thanks! smile

At the very beginning of chapter 6 (when you go outside) you will walk past a small building on the left, there is a body hanging inside and hitting the body makes a key drop

I assumed it would be, thanks for the confirmation Urban!
Going to be updating the guide tonight after I finish the game with all the rest I've found so far with credit to you guys for the ones you've mentioned.
I'm assuming that all the lockers remaining open means all the keys you've already found are gone in NG+?

Yep. There seems to be a finite number of keys in the game and they are without a doubt the hardest collectibles to find. Got about 90% of the normal collectibles on my first run and not even half of the keys.

I hope this is the same for everyone. But I found one key in one of the lockers. On the left side. Top row. Third from the right.

Could someone please verify this? Or is it random? It was the 16th overall door I've opened.

No, you only unlock NG+ for the difficulty you have beaten and the ones below. So if you beat Survival, you can only choose NG+ for Survival or Casual.

I am playing the 360 version and found on chapter 6 when you and Joseph survive the first part where 2 waves of enemies attack you. After that you get to the large open area where the enemies fire rail guns at you. Get your sniper out and there is one on the large building in front of you. The key drops where the chainsaw boss is.

In chapter 7 when you choose to go left or right. If you go right and follow the stairs down there is a pull-back lever on the left which activates a falling spike trap. Once pulled, climb onto the spike trap and let it rise. Once you reach the top there is a statue sitting on top of the left column behind you. This blends in very very well. I actually climbed up there before and missed it. KEEP GOING MAN. Guide is great so far. Keep updating ASAP and I will keep you posted.

Is the achievement unlocked just for not shooting in the tunnels or the whole chapter? I really can't remember. Because there's no possible way to get the final key without shooting it.

Thanks for this guide! I had the stupid idea that because the lockers went into NG+ al they keys could be picked up again and it wouldn't matter if you didn't find them all! When I realised the ones I already found were not there next game I panicked lol! I had only started writing them down from Chapter 7 so I would have been missing 1 or 2 without this, thanks so much! :)

Hey Deadpool I found a key in chapter 8, once you get into the water there are 3 spurts of water or small waterfalls on the right wall and there is a statue in the last one. I wasn't sure if this was the 2nd key you mentioned "in an indent" or another one as I thought I had remembered getting that one on my first run through the game. If they are the same no worries and thanks again for compiling this guide so quickly.

In chapter 8, in the last room where the statue is in the pipe, there is a bottle on the floor that you can throw at the statue to get the key and still get the other achievement for not firing a single shot through he level. Great guide by the way!!

I have now found an additional Goddess Statue: Chapter 10, the first to encounter. After activating the power, horrifying drill traps are also activated. You have to activated a switch, after you dealt with the first encounter of a new enemy type. By activating it, you make one drill trap move upwards and downwards. As you get past it, stop, a heat grid trap would crush you, but you look behind it and shoot a Goddess Statue before you get yourself behind it for collecting a Locker Key.

Not additional! It was the third one that was listed for Chapter 10, but it is only accessed as the first - this is why I thought it would be a new discovery.

In chapter 8, it is possible to collect the first key without shooting. Just open the gate and the statue will come down to melee range.

You can also get the statue in the Pipe on ch 8 without shooting, you pick up the lone bottle in the room and hit the statue with the bottle. I missed of course, but its possible. Worst case scenario just pick it up or do the achievement for no shots on the next play through.

In chapter 4, the first key is inside the body but to interact with it and get the key you first have to look at the xray picture on the desk that is against the wall.

I got down to the last 3 lockers without having opened the one with the two extra keys in it yet. The first time I opened one it gave me explosive bolts. I reloaded my save and got the keys next time. It is possible for the game to fuck you by using up all your findable keys before getting the locker with the extra keys in it.

Thank you for taking the time to put this in text form, much easier to print out and use as a checklist than trying to use a video. Reading the comments I did not use my last 10 keys until I had them all and saved before doing so. I only got one key from the lockers, but I had 1 key left over after I opened ll the lockers

Four more statues I've found.

Chapter 8

- In the beginning when opening the gate. After you are done look at the big chain. The statue is on the chain right in front of your face.
- After the second gate you enter an area with water. Follow the path and you should see very small water falls to your right. Behind one of them is the statue.

Chapter 9

- Inside the mansion go upstairs and through the double door. Run across the room and turn 180°. Look up and the statue lies in the upper right corner of the glass ceiling.
- In the burning barn. Go upstairs and right beneath the window in the corner stands the statue.

Not sure if you already found those but might as well contribute with what I found in NG+ ^^

I have about 12 lockers left to open. The keys I can remember are:

Chapter 11
- Before you meet the water monster for the first time. The concrete under your feet will break and you will fall into the water. Look to your left and you will see a floating statue. Swim behind it to get it inside the blue tube. Then you can destroy it without losing the key in the water.
- After the terrible ride at the construction site you come into an office building. Right at the start after you climbed to the window you can see a Brain Energy machine. Press the button once to receive a brain gel. Press a second time and you get a statue.

Chapter 14
- After you have killed all normal enemies in the train cars you will come an opening and see the train car bridge up ahead. Turn around and go through the train car into the next one. Turn right and at the end is the statue.
- You will come to a section where you have to go through waist high water and fight against the two headed monsters. You will see a fence on the right side. The statue is behind it. Go up a little further and turn right. This will lead you to the statue.

The rest I sadly can't remember. Hopefully will find more in my no upgrade run.

Priit3, you're a lifesaver! One more key to go guys! dance
I'll add them into the guide once I pick them up and I can give an accurate description in my own words.
Going to add a little bit with credit to everyone who helped out too. Some of you told me about keys I had, some of you let me know about new ones, but you've all helped people who read this before it was complete and I think naming everyone and giving credit for helping is easier than going through and listing who named what key. If anyone for some reason has an issue with that and would like the keys they mentioned credited to them just let me know!

So glad to be nearly finished with this. Between the darkness of this game and the dodgy camera angles some of these keys were hell to find!

Chapter 2
Key #1: In Chapter 2 when you reach the 1st Gate, it is directly to your left on the stone wall.

Key #2: When you reach the big Bonfire with the Haunted just sitting in front of it. Instead of heading left towards the 2nd gate, head straight towards a house. Inside the house is a boarded up room. Use your melee to break the door down and the key is in a box on the desk.

Chapter 3:

Key #3: Climb the big tower at the end of the level and if you look down the hole that the ladder is in you can see this on one of the towers supports

Key #4: If you enter the barn from the door on the 2nd level, Immediately turn left towards the Sadist and there is a ladder going upwards. Head up the ladder and there will be a statue on a desk.

Key #5: Go to the bottom level of the barn and exit out the back. Head down the back alley and you will see some stairs. Instead of going up those stairs, take the path beside them at ground level and look at the top corner of the wall. There should be a haunted standing on the ground beside the wall that has the statue on it.

Key #6: Head out into the open( Middle of the map where all the haunted are). If you look upwards you can see a statue on a rope hanging. I think the rope is between the house of the shooting haunted and the one Marcello is in.

Chapter 4:

Key #7: This key is in the Torso of the body the doctor is working on. Search the x-ray on the desk to see they keys and then you can interact with the body.

Key #8: When you follow Ruvik and you are washed away in a flood of blood. You will appear in a blood soaked room where a bunch of enemies will spawn when you get near the white door. There are 3 sitches in the main area. One will activate a trap, one will drain the blood and the third one will release a body from a chute. Use the 3rd one a second time and it will drop a statue from a chute.

Chapter 5:

Key #9: After killing the invisible Haunted, you will come to a hole in the floor. Drop down and there will be a Rat with a statue on its back.

Key#10: When you are following the pipes to save Kidman. In the hall with all the jail cells. The statue is in the 2nd last cell to the right. It will be sitting on the bed.

Key #11: When you trigger Laura and run to the oil patch to burn her. Go back into that room she spawned from and open the locker. A Bat with a statue on it will fly out.

Chapter 6:

Key #12: Right at the start after leaving the safe zone and appearing in a house basement. Leave the house and head towards the the gate. On your way to the gate there will be a house to your left. Inside this house you will see at the far side a body hanging. Behind that body is a statue in the window.

Key #13: Once you get the sniper if you zoom to the first ledge of the tower you can see a statue up there. When you shoot it, it will drop right in front of the door where the sadist spawns.

Key# 14: When you reach the market place. You will see an audio tape on one of the tables to the right. There will be stacked boxes to the right after this table, break them to expose a hole in the wall. Crawl through and you will find a statue to your left

Key #15: When you arrive in a room where you need to lower the sacrifices onto the table, head left to where you see body bags being moved. The statue will be on one of those body bags.

Chapter 7:

Key #16: When you find the first wall where you knife the panel of a head out to reveal a hidden room, you will see a safe to your left. Open the safe to get a key.

**** When you arrive in the big room where a giant stone falls on the keeper and you need to place 3 panels on it to open the path, complete the left path first or else you will be unable to get key #18

Key #17: On the path to the right, you will come into a room with an audio tape at the opposite end of the room. To the left will be a trap with a switch. Use it to lower the trap, jump on top and when it rises you will see the statue on the corner closest to the wall and entrance.

There are 45 lockers in the game, and you need to find 45 keys to open them all. However, you can find an additional 2 keys in a random locker if you happen to miss any of the ones in the story. Lockers have useful items in them such as green gel and ammo. The keys can be found in Madonna statues, they look like so:

Image above shows what a Madonna statue looks like.
You open lockers in the save room, to get here, you must use the mirrors which can be found in each of the chapters. You will know when one is nearby as you can hear music.

To view every locker location, refer to Every Nook and Cranny for more details, or refer to Harry94_'s Collectibles Guide.
