Killing bears
The easiest method is placing a few Spear traps between you and the bear and shoot it with a few arrows, which will taunt it to run into the traps. You'll need four hits in total of arrows or traps to bring down a bear.
Killing rabbits
Use either bow & arrow or place a trap right over a rabbit hole then scare the rabbits back to their hole. Rabbits go to sleep at night, but they can usually be force spawned at their rabbit holes by sleeping at a shelter. Just place a trap over a hole and sleep an hour and you might catch something.
Workbenches
Workbenches can be found scattered about the islands, but there's ALWAYS a workbench at the Hardware store islands, which has an icon of a house with a hammer above it.
This is perfectly doable in the same playthrough as
Bear Hide clothing is the best clothing in the game, aside from the White/Elder Wolf Jacket. You will need to kill several bears to have enough pelts to craft a whole set. In the campaign, bears start appearing near the half-way point. In endless mode they can be found from the start. Bears can be difficult to kill but there is a good strategy. Place two spear traps, a short distance apart, away from the bear. Shoot the bear with an arrow and run past your traps. The bear should follow and trigger both traps. Finish him with a second arrow as he recovers. You will also need Leather Kits, crafted from rabbit pelts at workbenches.
