How to unlock the River God achievement in The Flame in the Flood - Definitive Guide

to obtain this achievement you'll need to survive 200 miles in the one playthrough of endless mode. it is NOT cumulative.

I'm not going to bother making a guide for the 100 mile achievement because that one pales in comparison to this one. the difference after the 100 mile mark is completely different than the first 100 miles of endless mode. I'll get into more detail below.

MILES 1-100

It's all about preparation for the first 100 miles. You'll want to eventually craft a full set of bear hide gear, a fully upgraded raft, all 4 tools, and a stockpile of max stacked materials in your inventory and raft inventory.

Create 4 pouches to expand Scout's inventory to the max as soon as you can.
That's usually the first thing i'll try to do when I start any playthrough. Having the extra space is a godsend. You never want to get in the stupid situation of figuring out what item is most important to not leave behind.

I cannot stress enough on the fact to loot EVERYWHERE. The more places you land the better. Once your raft is fully upgraded you'll have an insanely easy time for the remainder of the first 100 miles.

You need jerky, and quit eating it. A jerky stockpile is absolutely vital for miles 100-200.
Jerky never spoils, and you're going to need plenty of salt. Salt can be found randomly in different locations (I have better luck in shop areas), and also on the river while rafting. Occasionally light blue illuminated islands will show up while rafting and you can press A on them to be granted with a random piece of loot. I've seen plenty of salt's come out of those from my personal experience.

If you've been looting every location to the best of your ability, you shouldn't have any problems living off of the meat you've accumulated from wolf, rabbit, and boar kills.
I personally had plenty of cooked meat spoil on me because I just had too much I didn't know what to do with it.

My inventory looked a little something close to this by mile 100:

18 jerky
3-5 cooked meat
10 penicillin
5 splints
10 bandages
5 aloe
10 alcohol
2 dandelion tea
2 sumae tea
10 lumber
10 flint
80 cattails
20 braided cord
20 saplings
5 repair patches
2-3 gas

Miles 100-200

This is more or less where it starts getting insane.

All regions are now completely over run with wilderness locations with the exception of maybe 1 location per region that is not wilderness.

Food and Supplies are now very VERY scarce on each location. It's almost not worth it to explore locations very hard anymore.

I will try to outline very key points to making it to 200:

SAVE THE RAFT!
The game seems to start cycling the same regions over and over again. However, marinas are now incredibly rare. I only ever saw one per cycle and i'm not even sure if that's a guarantee. If you don't take care of your raft, you'll die. I got down to 20% raft health around 165 miles because I was getting a little careless and I almost suffered for it. Luckily by 175 they gave me my marina so I could repair my raft.

SHOOT THE RAPIDS?
This one is totally your call. If you are confident in your rafting skills, utilize this speedway. I did and can get you downriver pretty fast, however its a high risk high reward thing because if your raft takes too much damage and you take that final 10% hit, it's all over. The speed is fantastic though.

BEAR AND WOLF FIGHTS
With the replacement of wilderness locations everywhere, the chance of a bear and wolf fight is very high. Sometimes you'll arrive at a location and hear an angry bear. Wait until the fight is over and collect the spoils. This meat is very important because you don't want to dig into your jerky stash unless you absolutely have to.

EXPLORE CAREFULLY
There just isn't enough resources to make exploring beneficial. i only checked locations for bear fights. Otherwise I would just dock, eat, sleep, drink, gas up, and leave.

SAVE THE GAS
Eventually each cycle will put you in the desolate wasteland biome that has clear skies, and SLOW WATERS. This is the absolute worst. It almost caused me a pain back in the first 100 miles because I didn't have my water purifier on my raft, and didn't have my motor, and i started running out of charcoal. Basically I ALMOST had to start drinking polluted water to stay hydrated. You'll want to book it out of this region as fast as possible. Alternate between 3 pushes of the x button, and the motor. when the blue bar fills back up, 3 pushes of the x button, and the motor. Rinse and repeat until you get out of this god forsaken place.

DON'T OVERSLEEP
If you do this you're just wasting time you have to stop to eat more food and drink more water. the main one here is hunger because food is so precious.

For me I tried to speed run the last 100 miles. I got to the 200 mile mark with 8 jerky left in my stash and whole lot less of my cattails (30 to be exact). The final 100 mile stretch isn't easy, but just be efficient, stay positive, and take care of that raft.

Congrats if you got this one. Thanks for reading. I hope this helps some of you! Comment if you have questions or fears and I'll do my best to answer them asap.

@Spelunkie bummer dude! That's no good. You'll get it next time.

Luckily it sounds like a patch for the game is on it's way via the developer Twitter account.

I'm curious. How many marinas did you get in the last 100 miles?

I hope the patch fixes some of these glitched achievements. The snake charmer, the bear killer etc won't pop and I'm fairly certain the seamstress one too but I can't be certain as I have no accurate count of how many clothing items I have crafted.

patch will hopefully come out this week.

The 50 articles of clothing one will be awful if the game didn't track them from the start.
It's not easy to collect 50 stitching kits haha

without a doubt it's the scarcity of the marinas. without those, your raft will surely be destroyed. it's just a matter of time. you still have to budget your food carefully though no matter what. don't ever run out or you'll be sorry.

I have a question, about how long does this take if you're not going for anything else? Maybe 10-12 hours? So far I've spent 6 hours in story mode (making a considerable amount of stops) and I've traveled 36.5 miles.

Boy...I can't remember. I think it took me two or three nights after work of playing? After about 150 miles I just made a B line for the finish. That's just an estimate. It's been a long time since I've played this game. Achievements are STILL glitched to this day.

Yeah, I would chime in with just saying that this one will take a LONG time to complete. Even if you have full supplies and just gas your way through a bunch of miles, it still takes a long time. So just take it nice and easy and enjoy the scenery

Does this have to be done in one sitting? Are there checkpoints? How does it work? Obviously when you die its over.

The game saves when landing on an island, when entering a bridge, when you sleep and when you die. So no, it doesn't need to be made in one sitting

Fantastic guide! (And the achievements are still glitchy, but popping.)

One thing I've found that worked for me in both the campaign and now Endless River is to abuse the save points. That bear jump over your trap? QUIT OUT! Raft about to bite it? QUIT OUT! Using too many supplies? Waste too much time? Snakebite? QUIT OUT!!

Does Aesop carry over items from your death in Endless mode like he does in Campaign? Can I build up a full Wolf Suit of clothes and then put them on Aesop and die? No one mentioned temperature, and it seems like you stopped upgrading clothes at boars hide. Do you not need bear/wolf clothes to stay warm? Looking to start on this soon.

The solution says bear clothes, not boar.

Yes you can fill Aesop's bag for endless.

Another quick tip: if you're rafting you can use LT to access Scout's inventory (excluding Aesop/Raft inventory) to eat, drink, access healing items and gas up the raft all whilst still in motion! :)

Very helpful if you space out for a while and are close to death. xD

I don't know if I got lucky or they've made it easier since the guide was made but I found marinas everywhere and the last 100 miles were actually much easier than the first

This was definitely not as hard as it must have been earlier. I saw marinas the entire way down, even past mile 195.

It helps a lot if you use a torch glitch found by ThePaleHorseman (check his solution).

With the torch in your hand, you can get into bear's cave and steal its stuff and the bear will get out of its cave. If there are other animals in the area, the bear will start hunting them down. So anytime you run into an area with bear and three wolves, you hit the jackpot.
Also if there are a lot of snakes, you can attract them and run straight into bear's cave. 5 or 6 snake will kill the bear. If it is not dead, finish it off with arrows / traps.

Great guide! Wanted to add more info about those last 100 miles. It seems they have fixed the issue where the marinas were incredibly rare. I was finding one every couple miles so as long as I had enough supplies, that was not really an issue.

Furthermore, I noticed the cycling of areas around mile marker 130. About every 25 miles, I ran into the "SLOW WATERS" area and it lasted close to 4 miles. Hope that helps for anyone that just can't wait to make it through the crawl that is the desolate wasteland.

Just want to chime in and say the marinas do not seem to be as rare as some of these older guides say. I saw marinas about every other mile all the way down. As long as you have a good store of food and a full raft/clothes getting to mile 200 isn't so bad these days I think.

Aw man, I think the last marina i saw was between the 150 and 160 mile marks. I was screaming for thirty minutes trying to maneuver 20 miles with 10% health.

I'm currently just at 150 mile mark, but I don't see what's so insane about 100 miles+. Around the 50 mile mark I noticed the "looping" of the regions, as you mention, but that's about it. The main difference is like you say, the scarcity of Marinas, but other than that from 50 miles on it's just all more of the same. What I did though was hoard jars. At any given moment I have around 10 jars of water and 10 jars of gas, it really helps out a lot. With that many water jars, I can just fill them up in the rainy areas and I won't run out in the dry ones.

This isn't a guide, as the other one already does a well enough job on that, but an exploit I found by chance that helps a ton.

First, craft a torch. Now when you're on foot (not on the raft) use the left trigger and press right to see the quick use menu with the torch in it. Use the torch and you will see the circle above your head that gives you an idea of how much is left before the torch is used up.

With the torch equipped and burning, use the left trigger to bring up the menu again and highlight the torch, but don't press anything yet. Now when the circle empties the torch is extinguished and you lose it from your inventory. At least, that's what usually happens. However, at the moment the percentage on the torch reaches 0, shown by the circle being empty and even more helpful when you HEAR the sound of the torch going out, press A immediately to unequip it.

You should now be able to use the left trigger and once again look in your inventory and you should have the same torch at 0%. This torch will now last forever, no matter how long or how many times you use it. It won't appear lit but it will still have all the effects of a torch.

You're now free to explore any area without fear of attack from wolves or boars and can even use it to move snakes around to where you can use them to help you kill other animals for skins and meat.

Enjoy, and hopefully this helps someone as much as it did for me!

Haha. Glad it helped. It was one of those "wait a minute... can I replicate this accident?" moments. Hooray for the helpful bugs in games.

This happened to me by accident, and I was thrilled to see your recipe for making it happen deliberately. I tried it out for the first time just now, and it worked perfectly. Infini-torch is now in my inventory. This is going to be so helpful in my quest for the more demanding achievements. Thank you so much for doing the research to suss out this method, good Horseman!

Possibly the most difficult achievement in the game. It’s all about preparation. You need to travel 200 miles down the river. Each consecutive mile is more difficult than the one previous. The first 100 miles will be preparation for the second 100 miles. Take your time here and collect as many supplies as you can. Stockpile as much Jerky, Clean Water, Gas, and Repair Patches as you can. Make sure you have a full set of Bear Hide clothing (or, even better, a White/Elder Wolf Jacket). Fully upgrade your raft.

The second 100 miles are much more difficult. Marinas will become more rare, so be careful with your raft to avoid too much damage. Most locations will be replaced by wilderness, with little to no items to pick up. Only stop to rest, eat, drink, and fill up your tank with gas. Occasionally you will catch a fight between bears and wolves. Wait till the fight is over and pick up meat from the losers. Save your fuel for when you enter “slow water areas”. Row your boat to speed up, then use gas as your stamina recovers. Repeat over and over until you get out of the slow water. You will make rapid progress because you won’t be stopping very often. The real difficulty is determined by how well you prepared during the first 100 miles.

Remember, in endless mode Permadeath is on, so don’t take any risks. If you are close to dying, or if your raft is close to sinking, quit to the main menu and hit “Continue” to resume to when the game last saved.
