How to unlock the Free Roam achievement in The Good Life - Definitive Guide
Gates are 1 of 3 things that must be visited and unlocked around the map (the others being Shrines and Campgrounds).
There are exactly 14 gates marked on the map that must be unlocked, so you need to get them all for the achievement. They show up as small brown gates that will be dull initially. Approach them and you can interact to unlock them, costing £10 each time. Once unlocked, they will be full-coloured.
Unlike Shrines and Campgrounds, you should be able to get this achievement almost as soon as you start the game.
However, unless you enjoy walking very slowly around a large map, I recommend progressing the story until you are some way through the Route A missions. During those missions, you will tame a sheep that you can ride, which is a much faster way to get around. This coincides with unlocking the Mount Thy Shteed achievement. Once that is done, you can summon your sheep by pressing (unless indoors, or some other spots).
Make sure you have at least £140 and run around the map, unlocking each gate. Once you unlock the 14th, this achievement will unlock.
