How to unlock the Strings of Steel achievement in The Gunstringer - Definitive Guide

Welcome to my Video Walkthrough of the achievement Strings of Steel! For this achievement, you will need to beat the game from start to finish without dying to hardcore. So this include : Prologue, Play 1, 2, 3, 4 and epilogue. This must be done in one sitting without going back to the dashboard.

First, i know that my videos that i made looks not so great, especially the first half of them ( because i forgot to put the deinterlace on). But i did what i could with what i had! I just hope that you appreciate them :)

Alright!

What awaits you on hardcore?
More enemies, bullet to avoid and traps! Also, you take twice the damage. The bosses at the end of the play arent much different except that they are a bit more fast. The dragon tho, is a different story! ( See the third tip )

4 IMPORTANT TIPS before you start your playthrough!

1- Find someone with who to play! The game is way more easier in 2 players, it exactly the same except you got 2 guns permanently to defend yourself instead of 1! If you cant find someone tho, dont worry the game is managable alone too.

2- Be sure to master the infinite shoot trick! You can target up to 6 enemies before shooting. BUT when you start shooting, if you target more enemies before the last bullet is shoot, it'll keep shooting until you cant more! You must master this for the last play if you want to be able to destroy the skull walls and the horde of zombies without getting hit!

3- ABSOLUTELY practice the play 3-3 ( Dragon boss fight ) it is the hardest boss in the game and he will KILL you if you come unprepared. So instead of losing hours of your time, before starting your hardcore playthrough, go stage select and do 3-3 on hardcore a few times until you can beat him 3 times in a row without dying. Trust me, if you dont, you will regret it!

4- There is a trick to make this achievement a lot more easier and forgiving! You can restart a stage if you know you arent doing well and that you are about to die. As soon as you get down to 1 heart, say : Xbox Pause, it will pause the game and from there you can restart the stage without risking dying.

(Credit goes to Fall of Zebes & Ham Salad for this tip ) Thanks!

Are you ready!? Launch your game, go in the shop first if you didnt buy the hardcore mode yet. Then start from the prologue and be sure to put hardcore mode ON!

Good Luck!

The first 15 seconds of the video Play 1-1 & 1-2 look weird but it get normal after that.

EDIT: VIDEOS NO LONGER WORK. REMOVED. Beanpotter

Questions & Answers

Q1. You did play 2 players on these video right?
A1. Yeah, i did this playthrough with my wife. Except for the Play 4, i did this part alone.

Q2. I dont feel like watching all these videos, any suggestion on which i MUST watch?
A2. Hmm, i HIGHLY suggest you to watch 2-2, 2-4, and every boss fight. The other acts are not that tough except for the last play with the skull block and zombie, you just need to master the infinite shoot trick and it isnt really different than normal playthrough.

Q3. May i use your video for my guide on any other site?
A3. Sure, but please warn me first and give me credits! :)

Q4. Where are you from?
A4. I am a french canadian. I live in Quebec :)

Can you restart an act if it looks like you are abouts to die and still get the achievement?

I don't suppose turning on No Fail mode can still net you this achievement?

Someone would need to try it to confirm this but i highly doubt it would.

That's a shame about restarting. Looks like I will need to practice the boss and dragon fights before attempting this. Great guide though

No Fail Mode will not work. If you get down to zero hearts (and even if you get back up to more) you don't get the hardcore medal when the level is over.

Tried it myself.

I died on 4-4, because of the invisible purple barriers the dolls make. I thought I knew the level well and wasn't prepared for it. I think it would be beneficial if you added a note about this...it's a very, very, tough part in my opinion.

Scratch that, I guess the game glitched on me, because in your video, the purple streaks are there. I did this and there were no streaks. I had to blindly navigate behind the carriage.

Second time it glitched on me in one day. A level was completely black besides my health and score half way through my run. Glitched on me twice in two runs actually.

Does falling off an edge/ missing a jump count as dying, or do you have to lose all your hearts?

After reading through the interview with Dan Teasdale, it appears you may be able to restart segments without affecting the achievement. "Also, pay very careful attention to the wording of that achievement. Note that it says “Don’t die”, not “Don’t restart”. That plus the “Xbox Pause!” voice command will probably help tremendously if you’re having serious trouble." Am I wrong that this sounds like you can restart? Anyone confirm or deny?

I am happy to confirm that you can still get this achievement as long as you RESTART a stage before you DIE.

I just got this achievement, and I restarted on 2-5, and several times on 3-3. I paused the game when I got down to ONE HEART, by using the "XBOX PAUSE" command, which is faster than the standard Kinect pause gesture. Then I restarted from the pause menu. I never backed out to the main menu.

It certainly made this a bit easier to accomplish.

Easier than saying "Xbox Pause" in case you have a second player, or are good with reaching to grab something quickly is to have a wired controller plugged in and active. As soon as you drop to one heart, hit the pause button; even with bending over to hit it on the floor, it was MUCH quicker than saying "Xbox Pause."

During the kite dragon boss battle, it wouldn't recognize that I was trying to pause and subsequently died due to it. I'd recommend the controller every time.

Okay, so I had the glitch on 4-4 with the invisible fire as well (fire and explosions stopped rendering about halfway through my playthrough, at the Mardi Gras level flamethrower section; best to just stop if this happens) and died to it. I turned my Xbox off for a while (totally pissed), and before I started a whole extra run, played 4-4 through to the end of the epilogue on hardcore and it was fine. I then skipped the credits. HERE'S THE INTERESTING PART: I immediately started another run, and Strings of Steel popped AT THE END OF 4-3. From this, it looks like you can actually start your Hardcore playthrough from any stage (presumably the dragon boss), complete through the epilogue, skip the credits, start from the beginning without turning off your box, and when you get back to chapter 3-2 the achievement should pop, since, for some reason, it still seems to count as a continuous run through! It was certainly a nice surprise (and that dragon was an asshole).

Also, I did the whole thing solo without much difficulty; definitely doable. Only had to restart on the dragon.

Have to echo everything Dingo Salad said - not actually that difficult, I did it alone on my first run through and only had to restart on the dragon. I can also confirm what he said about starting at 4-4, finishing the game, and then starting from prologue works! I went from there to be sure I didn't encounter the glitch people mentioned (I didn't and have never had any glitches with the game) and after doing what he describes I got the achievement at the end of 4-3.

I didn't actually use this guide as I didn't need the help, but thumbs up anyway for all your effort on the videos.

If anyone is still trying to go for this achievement, I got this yesterday right after the perfectionist achievement with little effort involved. I started at stage 3-3 with the kite dragon (this was the only level I had problems with). I continued all the way through the game and completed the epilogue. When the credits started rolling, I selected skip. This brings me back to the main menu which I selected play prologue (also selecting hardcore). Once I completed 3-2 the achievement popped.
As mentioned before definitely start your session with the kite dragon stage, and it helps a lot to complete the perfectionist achievement prior to this one as you have an idea on how these levels will play out.

Credit goes to TinyShade and Legohead 1977. The advice on the perfectionist achievement guide makes this achievement a lot easier.

Edit: I wrote 2 words wrong

---------------------------------------------------

I just want to add more info about the dragon boss and some tips:

The GunstringerPerfectionistThe Perfectionist achievement in The Gunstringer worth 446 pointsWin a gold medal in every act of every play.

First, I recommend unlocking "Perfectionist" before trying this achievement, and after you unlocked it, try this achievement ASAP. You'll have most of the levels fresh on your memory :)

Second, my native language isn't english, so when I said "Xbox, pause" worked only 10% of the time. so I recommend a wired controller and press the button for pause.

Third, sometimes Kinect recognized my couch as a 2nd player. Mostly of the time you don't need to worry about it, the problem is when you have dual guns. The 2nd player controls the 2nd gun, so you are at a disadvantage when this happens. You need to pause the game in a safe place, go out of the room so Kinect has to recognize you again.

About the dragon:

1- You can use the always useful "trick" to positioning easily: Pause the game, select "resume game" and get your hand in the position you need :) (I used it only on 2 attacks, when the dragon throws fireballs at the top and the bottom (horizontally) and when he throws a lot of fireballs (the only way to avoid it is staying in the middle).

To use this method without problem, grab the controller with the hand that you use to shoot, and when the dragon stop attacking you, change the controller to the other hand.

2- Like Tinyshade said, practice this level a lot. I tried 15 times until I undestand every movement.

3- If I'm not mistaken, the dragon attacks you with fireballs four times before he attacks spitting fire.

4- IMO, when he attacks with fire, is almost the same than on normal difficulty, maybe is more fast.

Good luck with this achievement :)

This is by far the hardest achievement in the game. You will need to beat all four plays, which have 5 acts each, in one session, in other words without exiting the game to the main menu. You must also be on hardcore mode. Oh, one last thing: you can't die. You have hearts on your screen to show your current health so keep an eye on that. I think it is best told how you will be affected by this:

Quote:

"The developers say the mode is anything but “fair,” and here’s why: Enemies will load, reload and shoot at thrice the speed of what they normally would, traps will appear in the most unwanted and deadliest of places and should you find yourself in the situation of having been shot, you lose double the health without it regenerating. But here’s the real kick in nuts: You die, you get booted back to the Xbox dashboard without the possibility of continuing your game where you left off, meaning you will have no option but to play it through in one sitting, which happens to be the way to go if you’d like that prestigious “Strings of Steel” achievement."

Here is a video of a playthrough of the game on hardcore HERE! (THANKS TO HOSEO22)
