How to unlock the I'm so Hardcore! achievement in The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing - Definitive Guide

Make sure to set game up on Casual Hardcore difficulty for an easier playthrough.

If playing single player and you know you are about to die simply hit start which pauses the game and exit the game.

If you still die hit your HOME button and START - MANAGE GAME - and delete your SAVE DATA FROM CONSOLE ONLY! Do not dashboard and quit your game. Deleting your save will dashboard your game. Stay on this screen and make sure your save is fully deleted. For some reason I would have to hit delete save from console twice for it to register properly.

Make sure your save is deleted fully from console. Then boot the game back up and your game should sync to your cloud save backup. At most you should only lose 20 minutes of progress.

Another option is to progress to a certain point in the game you feel comfortable with. Once you get worried you might die go into network settings and hit go offline. While offline your save will never sync to the cloud. If you die simply delete your save from console and go back to settings and hit go online. You will be back to when you first hit go offline.

Died 2-3 times early on but once I got some decent skills and HP it was smooth sailing. The go offline and delete local save trick works just fine. Just make sure you don't quit the game either in game or from the dashboard. The game will automatically close after you delete the local save, then go online again and it will sync the cloud save.

I disagree with putting Katarina in ghost form. She is helpful in drawing some of the enemies away from you and she actually does decent dps once you get her some good gear. She'll finish off running enemies which can be a pain when you're melee and having to chase them. Also the fact that she dies quickly can actually be a big help in the late levels with the swarms of ornithopters that kill her very fast. The key is putting several levels into Wail of Vengeance. Only 5 SP into that and with making her melee and pumping all her ability points into Body she blows up for over 3000 damage at level 25 which kills EVERYTHING near her. I got the perk that makes her revive 33% faster and she was blowing everything up for me at the end with her deaths.

This is me at lvl 18:

Full body at 148

Skills: 2 strike, 7 parry expertise, max bodybuilding, 1 Full Resistance (will max this asasp)

Aura: 10 aura of defiance (9,6 damage reduction)+5 defense, 3 hunter's rejuvenation (7,8 hp per hit)

Tricks: 5 Arcance healing, 1 Mystic shield (important, if your in a tight spot use it)

Perks: Natural healer, Scavanger (+50 poison resistance is important later on), Bully (+5 body), Veteran hunter(can wield items 1 lvl higher and with all the magic find this is nice), Furious.

Lady katarina:

Full luck at 75

Skills: incorporeal defense 10, withering kiss 3, gift of resistance 10, empowering presence 1 (will max this asap)

Ghost form only

Tips: You will be a tanking stopping machine and yes you don't do much damage but it mostly comes from Lady katarina skills and your weapons. Tell me if this helped smile

In end game i used FINezula tips and it worked out well. I used the old mana on hit and health on hit trick. As said katarina in ghost mode is important and use Spirit guardian (max it asap) it gives you 35% damage resist = 45% damage resist with ghost mode. Max body with her, you need to farm health potions at the spider boss (as said above don't kill him)

My end game items (best items)

http://tinyurl.com/qx4czfq
http://tinyurl.com/q7qud7o
http://tinyurl.com/qh78vxc
http://tinyurl.com/pjrjtex

Perks are important and can't be undone. You need to reset your ability points to get some perks and it costs a lot of gold:

Master
Veteran Hunter
Destructive
Perfect Aim
Resistive
Slayer
Uncanny Fighter
Drinker
Berserker
Precise

It's true about MP it's weird and so limited. Constant crashing so just played Sp. I had no problems with Diablo 3 but this game has insane framerate drops all the time.

Not sure while you lost your character unless you didn't fully delete your save from console. I played the game coop and we each died 3 plus times and never lost our save doing this method. I have used the above method for every game on Xbox One that requires a no death run playthrough or hard challenge.

Btw: What does NOT work is crying around for a minute or so, then quitting the game and immediately restarting it without deleting the local savegame. Tried that yesterday...

Be sure to fully delete from console only. Sometimes it takes deleting it twice to fully register your save being deleted. Don't boot up the game again until you see your save gone from the dashboard. Make sure to delete from console only and not hit delete from everywhere.

I used this tecnique playinq zombie, if you die DON'T QUIT the game (it force xbox one to sync save on cloud), go to dashboard and go offline, after that close the game and delete your local save. On zombie it worked everytime.

Just a heads up for anyone hoping to do the quit trick on the last boss--it will not work. The second you are killed in the final battle scene the game will automatically end giving you no change to pause.

3 seconds is a bit of an exaggeration RockC. =/

You need to actually create a hardcore character Thulgrum, you cannot use a character that was created as a normal one.

I played the game in coop and the last boss has twice the amount of hp. He hit me with couple fireballs and ran me over and I died. I was making the point that you can die on the last boss and still delete your save and recover.

If you are quick enough. You need to be able to say for sure that the hit will kill you and hit the pause before you drop.

I was about a second or two off and lost the entire playthrough.

Just use Earthquake. Invest all your points in the Body stat and use Earthquake with only the modifier that amplifies its damage. You won't have any trouble with HC.

SethMode i just got it on my first try! i got through no problem with 100% body & scattershot build, with crazy mana regen and health on hit (katarina in ghost mode) but when i was about to finish the game i went offline first, and didnt get the ach. quit the game and went to delete my local save data and went back online, rebooted the game and after it had synced with the earlier cloud save the achievement popped!
you can just use this trick to revert to a specific spot back in time. lets say youre about to leave a village, go offline! keep playing and when u get back to town safely immediately go back online, this will give it some time to save to cloud while youre shopping & selling etc. then repeat the process when youre about to leave again.
now if you do die DONT panic! as long as you do the steps correctly, reverting should work!
PS. dont kill the spider boss, you can stay to grind levels there killing the smaller spiders!

Just beat the game on hardcore with a ranged character. I was not overly powerful but I managed to win very easily. Every level Katarina gets goes into something to keep you alive or give her health and stay at distance and when things get close. Did not have to use save scrum at all.

Weird. I was just playing, and nothing was really doing any damage to me, and then all of a sudden I ran into an elite pack of those huge monsters that lob cannonballs and they instantly killed me ~lvl 27

I started replaying, and went only slightly more for defense, and when I got to the same type of pack at level 25 they were hitting me for like 1/20th of my health.

Trivial Factor's suggestion on how to beat the game in hardcore mode is just superb. Died the first try in spider mines at lvl 11, after that no problem going through the game. the omnicopters in the end weren't even as tedious as in my first walktrough, the earthquake ability kills them quite quickly if Katarina doesn't already do it for you. ranged character is really useless. thumbs up!

FML! You can truely just get fucked with no warning. I went with a DEX/DEF build and was pretty much sailing through with no issues, barely getting even hit (dodging everything) and 1-shoting most enemies. Made it through mines and Dreadnoughts with no issue.

Then, running through the Rookery, two cannonball enemies nail me from nowhere, didn't even have chance before the death message came up. Oh well, start again...

SGT Sprinkles, I'm guessing maybe you did what I did, which is I accidentally booted the game again before I deleted the console data (I panicked! haha). That made a new cloud save for me, so now my cloud save is one with my level 17 dead in the ground :(

Oh well, at least the game is a fun time waster. Let's do it again! Also, damn you things in the Dreadworks that fire those freaking crazy damaging cannon balls!

Works! Here's what I just did:
- died in game
- cn_guide to go to dashboard
- cn_start to access 'context' menu
- "Quit game"
- Went to settings -> network -> Go offline
- Deleted local savegame. I had to delete it several times for it to vanish.
- Back to settings -> network -> Go online
- Started game again
- Sync
- Still alive and back to last "checkpoint"/portal

I used a pistols with a focus on explosive shot and earthquake as my two abilities. Absolutely ran through it and handled the final boss with ease.

I do think the key to that last fight is to remove his machines (four of them) and then work on the spawn points for the enemies. Once all that nonsense is cleared up the boss is a walking target.

I'm going after this: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=14799... (like this build imo).
For the rest of the perks: http://www.gamebanshee.com/vanhelsing/perks.php

Extra perks (mostly defense):

Resistive, +20% elemental resistance, +20% physical resistance, +20% poison resistance

Enchanted Body +20% HP regeneration, +20% mana regeneration

Iron Man Bonus to all resistances when injured (the more HPs lost, the better the bonus)

Focused -10% cooldowns, +20% mana regeneration

I did it legit with a pretty basic character. I just threw every ability point into Body and maxed cleave (with 1 yard bonus) and every defensive/healing skill and perk I could get (although the actual healing trick was only level 4 when I finished the game). My health bar barely ever moved once I got past level 20. I just used cleave on groups of enemies.. the DPS was more than enough since my body stat was so high.

There are a few areas to look out for: the spider mines, anywhere that those slow poison-flamethrower guys show up, and anywhere that an enemy can slow/stop you from moving. Don't be afraid to fall back, and make sure to turn on auto-potions in the options.

The final boss went down no problem. I literally stood in front of it, swung my sword over and over, and he died. I may have used one potion.

okay this is how i saved my dead hardcore character.

If you die, do the following exactly as described below AS SOON AS YOU DIE.

1. Hit Guide button, go to van helsing (do not dash, do not quit the game)
2. Press start and then hit "manage"
3. delete save data (on console only)

Your game will have automatically quit as soon as you did that, and when you start it back up, it will sync your system with the save data on the cloud. My character is still alive from doing exactly what i said above. I died when i got to old town (got stampeded by the bull-type enemy).

This is cool for a safety net but the guide from MushaConvoy should really be the no.1 guide to follow.

Just used it myself and it made Hardcore a walk in the park! I came close to dying once but used a skill to get to safety - I finished the game with over 200 health potions left.

The boss died in about 5 seconds - whilst I lost little health, I can’t stress how awesome a character build it is!

I also didn’t utilise the enchantment and essences until the very end, so could have made it even easier. Forgot you could re-roll the enchanments, d’oh!

While the other guides here and on other sites are pretty good, I could never understand why a Ranged build was taken. Sure, its safer to hang back, but with so many moments in this game where you're mobbed by small enemies, or ripped into them by some of the larger enemies, not to mention the final boss fight.. a Ranged build is just far too squishy for my liking, leaving too much to chance and rely on the "delete save" trick mentioned a number of times already. I personally have had no issues, never even dropped below 50% health - and even then, I was being silly and seeing how many I could take on before needing to heal. The build I used is all about survival in the face of danger, not trying to avoid the inevitable.

Difficulty
For the purpose of gaining the achievement, I'm assuming you're all on Casual Hardcore. No sense making it more challenging than you need to.
Secondly, play SOLO. While the game is much more fun with a friend, playing solo the enemies have substantially less health. My rough calculation was around one third of that when playing multiplayer with just a single buddy.
Disable enemy respawns. You'll level up plenty fine if you just play the story and grab any side missions, they're not hard. There is one exception to this late game, will get to that later.

Stats
Body. Put everything into Body. The ingame description should be enough to convince you, but if not.. the Body stat increases your defense and life pool. Health regeneration and potions are based on a percentage of this, so more life means more recovery too. The other thing Body does is it increases your Melee damage. For this reason, we're going a Melee class. One stat gives your damage a boost as well as survival. Every time you level up, spend everything in Body.

Skills - Mystic Warrior
To start with, spend a couple of points in Bash. If you pick up the secret weapon Excalibur in Croakwood (coin in the well), that further improves Bash. Before you make your way into the mines, respec at the Gypsy and put those points into Flowing Combo.
Flowing Combo (with Extending Combo) makes multiple strikes with each attack. If there are multiple enemies around, it'll hit them all. If there is only one target, then all strikes go to them. Better overall damage than Bash and works with groups as well, where Bash is largely single-target damage. This is the only offensive skill you need.
Parry is fantastic, with both upgrades. Max this out.
Bodybuilding is a great boost to your Health pool too. Late game, 10% health is over 150 points, more than you can get in a single piece of armour.

Skills - Occult Hunter
Don't ignore this tree, you want to max Full Resistance. Forget the upgrade nodes, this is a nice flat boost to your elemental and poison resistance. Very helpful late game.

Skills - Auras
Rampage (with Furious Rampage) is a great damage boost. While the upgrade node is only 1% extra critical chance, every bit helps. With this you'll be seeing damage in excess of 1000 towards the end, enough to kill most enemies in one hit. For this reason, there is no reason to take any of the powerup nodes on Flowing Combo. Keep Rage at maximum for this boost to Critical.
Aura of Defiance is your second aura. At max level you have a flat 10% damage reduction. Very handy.

Skills - Tricks
Arcane Healing - just one level here, I rarely needed to use it.. but when I did, it was good to have in addition to Health potions.
Last Stand - I took this one to level 3. Bonus damage and critical chance for 40 seconds was more than enough for any encounter.
Ethereal Embodyment gives you 3 seconds of invincibility. Its your "get out of trouble" card. If you're surrounded and life is disappearing before your eyes, hit this emergency button and you'll disappear and can walk through enemies to get a better position. I never needed to use it, but felt better that I had it there. Only one point though, higher levels do not increase the invincibility time.

Katarina
First and foremost, set her in Ghost mode. You don't want her going offensive and pulling a group of enemies to you that you're not ready for. In Ghost mode she gives you further damage reduction too.
Prioritise maxxing Spirit Guardian, even more damage reduction for you.
Gift of Resistance is good too, further boosting your elemental and poison resistances, those things can be a killer late game.
Any spare points you have could easily go in Spectral Boon (Attack Speed), Empowering Presence (Damage) or Otherworldly Senses (Magic Find).
Pour every ability point she gets into Body, for the same reason as you. The more life she has, the more damage she can take away from you with Spirit Guardian.

Perks
Berserker - 10% damage boost at max rage. You're already at max rage for the Rampage aura, you want this.
Precise - 5% Critical Chance on your first attack on an enemy. Which really means 5% extra chance they die on that first hit.
Iron Man [Req. Berserker + Lev10] - As your health drops, your resistances increase.
From here, save up your perks until you have 4 of them available to spend. By this time you should have more than enough points in Body and enough Gold to respec, so go talk to Gustav (probably at the Secret Lair by now)
Take 100 points off Body, put them all on Luck (costs around 50,000 gold). This gives you 110 base Luck and enables the following perks:
Destructive - 50% Critical Damage
Perfect Aim - 5% Critical Chance
Take those 100 points off Luck (costs around 50,000 gold), put 40 points on Dex, 15 points on Will and the rest back on Body. This enables the following perks:
Artful Dodger - 10% Dodge and 5% Attack Speed
Slayer - 10% Damage
After that, remove those points from Dex and Will (costs around 25,000 gold) and put them all back on Body.
These are handy to get all in one hit. Later on, if you have money to burn, you can respec again to give 110 Dex and get:
Gunslinger - 7% Attack Speed (applies to Melee despite the name).
Other Perks worthy of note:
Survivor [Req. 110 Body] - 5% Health, 20% better Health Regen
Drinker [Req. Drink Potions] - 20% Potion Efficiency and +50 Poison Resist

Items - Katarina
Covering Katarina first. As she's taking damage for you, give her items with Body. Forget dodge or resistances or anything as she's taking flat damage away from you in Ghost Mode.
The only exception to this is Magic Find. Any % she has in MF applies to you. Seen as she'll automatically heal, survival isn't an issue. Put what Magic Find you can on her instead of you.

Items - Helsing
Melee Weapon - mostly look for the better DPS. Even slower two-handed weapons are great with Flowing Combo attacking multiple times.
Ranged Weapon - as you're not using it, look for something that boosts Body.
Armour - Points in Body are good as that boosts damage and health, but don't neglect Resistance. Early on you want Poison resistance, late game you want Elemental as well.
Anything that boosts your Critical Chance is good too, have that Rampage Aura kick in more often.
Items that give Health-on-hit work much better with Flowing Combo and fast attacking dual wielded weapons, but even then, the health you get back is so minimal next to your 1000-2000 health pool. Prioritise other stats first.

Thinks to look out for
Croakwood - Make sure you do the side mission for the Gypsy to allow respec. Make sure you find the Ancient Coin, put it in the Well and use the Oil to get the sword from the stone (West of the well), this gets you a very good early two-handed sword "Excalibur".
Gallowsbog - Save one quest item "bone relic" or something to give to the Frog statue to the East, it gives 2 ability points. There are other statues like this later in the game in the Ink Realms.
Gallowsbog - Also while here activate the 8 Rune Stones around the place (they appear on the map) to activate a Forest Guardian fight to the West. Killing it gives 2 Ability Points and 1 Skill Point.
Mines - Change from Bash to Flowing Combo before you go in here. Bash against the hundreds of baby spiders here is not ideal, Flowing Combo makes short work of them. While you're doing the respec, don't forget to unlearn the powerups on Strike and Shoot, also the Ghostly Mirage as you're not using Katarina for that. Those points are better spent elsewhere.
Rookery - After the Dark Alchemist side mission is a Puddle of Goo. Use it and pick the first option "Its all the rage in Borgova" gaining +50 Poison Resistance permanently (second option is -25!)
Special Note: Courtesy of MrInfliction:
Quick note for the Puddle of Goo in the Rookery: On my playthrough, if I took the first option, it gave me a permanent -20 poison resistance. Even after trying deleting my local save and choosing to drink the Puddle of Goo 3 times in a row, it still gave me the negative stats. According to a guide found on Gamebanshee (http://www.gamebanshee.com/vanhelsing/walkthrough/theda....php), the outcome of drinking the Goo is random.
I believe that this occurence happens once every save file, so be ready to delete your local save and reload in case you get unlucky like I did ;).

Gables/Rooftop Mayhem - When you reach the final area of the game, you should be pretty close to Level 30. What you want to do, from Rooftop Mayhem, enable "Enemy Respawn". Now, when you quit the game (just back to the main menu), enemies will appear in the areas again. From the starting point on the Rooftop, head south and enter the Gables. When you arrive, you'll be surrounded by a bunch of rather weak non-elemental enemies that are easy to dispatch, along with one easy boss - The Marquis of Soot. He would quite regularly drop good Level 30 Rare, Epic and Set items. So... run from Rooftops to Gables, kill Marquis of Soot, return to Rooftops and quit the game. When you return you'll be at Rooftops, nice and close to rinse/repeat. Restarting in Gables sends you to the other end of the map.
The set I looked out for was the Gorgoniad Set:
Chest Armour - 4% Critical Chance, 15 Body, Damage Reduced by 10%, +100% Defense (Set: 2), 4% Attack Speed (Set: 3)
Cloak - 4% Critical Chance, 3% Attack Speed, ~75 Health, +100% Defense (Set: 2), Heals you by 20% of damage per hit (Set: 3)
Hat - 3% Critical Chance, 3% Attack Speed, 10 Health per Hit, ~9 to all Attributes (Set: 2), ~25% Critical Damage (Set: 3)
If you can get all 3 pieces, you will be practically invincible. Even two pieces will give you a substantial advantage for the boss. Not that you'll need it.

Great guide so far. A couple of points

The Flowing Combo skill requires you to be lvl14. I was only 11 when I hit the mines. I tried turning enemy respawn on but got no xp. I risked the mines and was fine using ranged weapon whilst running away to take out the many spiders!

For Gallowsbog, the Guardian fight is to the East by the bridge, the west is where you fight the green ‘spirit’ light that you follow.

For the 4 perks at once, when I respec’d my character couldn’t see that it cost anything? I also only had 3, when I put everything back into body I didn’t lose the ones I had unlocked for manipulating my stats. So it’s possible to respec and unlock the perks in readiness - not that I’ve needed them so far :)

In 'The lost place' after you kill the rabbit, it will drop a bone relic which you can take to the great gluttoner idol (near where you spawn) for an additional 2 ability points and 200xp.
Correction: There are 3 bone relics in this level, one from the rabbit, one from a generic minion and one from a minion called Lady Morticia appearing after the rabbit. Clear the whole map then back track to the idol for 6 ability points and 600xp.

So the key challenge came from Ornithopter enemies who did rinse my health, nearly died one point when trying to get to Tesla.

Awesome build and made it a walk in the park though! This really should be the number 1 guide.

Cheers! I'm glad you got through those damn Ornithopters, they're worse than the final boss!

Thanks - this should definitely be #1. I went through the game first try on hardcore following this guide, and never even had a close call with death. I agree about the Flowing Combo skill - without some serious grinding, you won't have it before the spider area. Doing the area with bash was slow, but not that hard.

This is THE solution to use. Final boss was dead before enemy waves even started.

Good guide! Admittedly my 1st playthrough probably wasn't the most efficient stats wise but this build felt a lot less squishy than my ranged character and the only time I ever really felt like I was in trouble was when I went through the final ink gate (mobbed by them green orbs and ghost women with no where to run) apart from that it felt far too easy!
Even the thropters weren't that much of a pain

Also regarding the puddle of goo - not sure if its been patched or if I'm just unlucky but in both my playthroughs I got the negative effect (Even reloaded 3 times with no joy)

I have to start again it will not allow me to save my stats or skill s. I started before reading this so I went to gypsy to change skills and stats but I was not allowed to put all points in to body I had to put 14 points in to dexterity for it to allow me to save. As for skills you can forget it I can change them but game will not allow me to keep the changes.

Really great guild. The only thing I changed was instead of the Drinker perk, I got the Resistive perk which gives you +20% Elemental, Physical, and Poison Resistance. You earn it by putting 40 ability points into Willpower. Thanks for the guide. +1

Great build, I haven't had a single trouble with it. That being said, I cannot stress this enough. DO THE HARDCORE AS YOUR FIRST RUN. All the sidequests/achievements are easy and you will save so much time.

I blasted thru the game in afternoon using an all body build. Used the lightning strike melee ability for packs and bash for single target. Bash is insanely OP. The final boss died in a like 5 hits. Thanks for the tips :)

Overall good guide but there are some errors in the Perks section. To get some of the bonuses listed, you need 50 Dexterity, not 40, as well as 25 Will, not 15. However I would mention a player should instead do 50 Dex and 50 Will as that will unlock better perks such as Resistive which gives you +20% to all resistances (poison, physical, and elemental).

Also the game soft caps critical damage at 450%. This means once your character reaches 450% increase in crit damage either through gear bonuses, perks, Luck attribute etc, they will see no more benefit past that number. 450% is very easy to hit late game if you get the right gear and add the right enchantments and essence, so there is no reason to grab the Destruction perk. Also note that your max crit damage % changes if you’re in combat vs out, especially when we have max Rampage Aura that gives us that nice bonus 180% to crit damage. Go to your character sheet and look for crit damage % while out of combat it may say only 200 something %, but start a fight and go to your character sheet and you’ll see it suddenly boosted to high 300s or into the 400s% since now the number is pulling off that max rage bonus. That extra 50% from Destruction perk may be good early on but will be a complete waste come end game, and since you can’t reset perks, it essentially becomes a waste for something better like upping resistances or HP etc.

Likewise I disagree on using the Drinker Perk. I rarely needed health potions and tbh this actually took me a while to unlock this perk. The +20% potion effectiveness isn’t really needed if you build right and don’t need potions. We never really use mana so that’s out, and with a Huge Body build, plus the right gear you’ll rarely take enough damage that Arcane Heal won’t fix. Late game you may start noticing that you actually take more damage or lose mana if you upgrade Bash or Flowing combo skills past level 1 or 2 and particularly if you don’t have any gear spect for Will or Mana boosts, so then I would instead recommend Enchanted Body (25 based points in Body and Willpower) for the + 20
Health and Mana regen. But again only get this if you really think you need it, Particularly to keep your mana up.

While the +50% poison resistance on Drinker perk is good mid game, it is essentially useless late game when all you face are Electric werewolves and the infamous Ornithopters (flying drones that electrify you) as you almost never run into poison in Act 3. Much better to instead invest in Resistive from 40 base Will and 100 base Body which gives you + 20% to all resistances. Bump to 50 points Willpower and you’ll unlock magical Hunter which gives you +10% melee weapon damage and +10% spell power. While we don’t really use spell power for this build, the +10% melee damage should not be ignored since all our damaging skills (bash and following combo) are based off raw melee weapon damage.

For Katarina, if you’re playing on Casual I never had her die while in Ghost form. We put all of her ability points into Body so it was enough that she never took noticeable damage even with Spirit Guardian maxed. I would instead encourage players to equip her with gear that raises her Luck/Magic and Gold find since this will boost the players gold and magic find. You can easily hit +100% to both attributes through Katrina’s gear. Don’t forget you can enchant her gear too and give her essence. Again go to the character sheet and you can see how her gear affects your bonuses by equipping something on Katarina than taking it off.

I just finished this on my first try. I got a lot of useful info from the other solutions, but there are a few things that I didn't see mentioned that I think could be of help.

First, there is a level cap at 30 for Van Helsing and 25 for Katarina. This means that you can grind a little extra for higher levels, more points, etc. But it is finite so you must plan your point usage for skills and tricks wisely. You are also limited to level 10 on the perk tree. You get a perk roughly every 2 levels.

Second, the most useful power-up as a hunter is the scatter shot. But the icicle shot can be very helpful for large enemies because there is a chance to freeze them for a few seconds. Which is just enough time to disrupt their attacks and finish them off.

Third, you should focus hard on getting items or upgrading items to restore HP and Mana for each hit. This will keep you alive and able to continue using upgraded attacks when you have a swarm of enemies around you.

Fourth, in the later levels I turned Katarina to Ghost mode because on any other setting she kept finding large swarms of ornithopters and bringing them back to me and nearly causing me to die. You don't get her attack ability in Ghost mode, but you still get all of her buffs.

Fifth, speaking of buffs, she has two buffs that increase your attack speed and damage, work on upgrading those first. Also, if you find yourself surrounded by enemies and about to die, you can use Ghastly Shape to quickly rush out of the middle of the enemies and you will cause damage to anyone you pass through. This is a quick and easy way to avoid death.

Sixth, if you choose to grind to level up, spend as much time grinding on the most recent place you have visited. The item drops seem to be tied to the level you were at when you first went there. The rooftop mayhem level has a boss called the Marquis of Soot that seems to respawn if you have enemy respawns turned on and it usually drops something good. I haven't seen named bosses respawn on any other levels.

Finally, if you have enough gold you can have the Romany woman enchant and disenchant your items until you find something that you like. Some of the enchantments are very powerful some are weak. It is just luck of the draw.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have questions or disagree before down-voting please. I am working my way through all of the Van Helsing games right now so I will stay engaged with this solution if you have questions.

Casual difficulty works for this achievement. My strategy was Thaumaturgy with Blizzard with Katarina on melee/defend and it blew everything away pretty effortlessly.

After completing the game once, begin a casual hardcore character. Finish the game a second time without dying to unlock this achievement. If you are about to die, quickly hit the home button on your controller and exit the app and reload it so you load a previous spot. If you do actually die, quickly hit the home button on your controller choose "manage game" from the tile on your dashboard and delete your save game locally (NOT from "everywhere") and it should load from its last upload to the cloud, which might set you back 15-20 minutes of game time - but that's better than a few hours for an entirely new run.

I would highly suggest a ranged build for this, maxing Katarina's health and Mirage abilities, and upping both of your resistances. Use her as a damage sponge, and spec for Explosive Shot to kill crowds quickly. If Kat goes down or they ignore her and come after you, RUN AWAY! You can go in large circles and simply turn and shoot every second or two, whittling down the crowd so it is more manageable. Also max out your healing ability and set your potions to auto-use when your health is low, and make sure you give some to Kat!
