This can be activated as soon as you start the game with Gustav. Hold R2 and navigate the reticule on to the character of your choice and it will provide you an option called "Follow Gustav". This will activate the trophy for you.

To activate following mode, hold 
or your move controller and aim at a character. When you release the button on them, you’ll see a white dot above their head, and you’ll automatically follow them everywhere they go, until you move.
