You get the gold variants from opening relics, but I didn't see one appear as a reward until after I'd visited Goldtropolis in the Rex-Plorer System (press

The party about needing to unlock Goldtropolis isn't accurate. You can get them from any Gold Relic, the more other items you have like items, costumes, etc the more likely to get a duplicate. Duplicates give Gold Relic Shards and 5 give a Gold (Mega) Relic. As long as you are opening everything low to high Green > Blue > Purple > Red then Gold you should get this around 100 costumes and before the end of the game. Just make sure to open every Chest and catch every Heart as they always give relics and Hearts are always Gold.

Got 2 after i opened ca. 30 Mega Relics, so it seems it's random because i collected only 250 Master Pieces

Best way to do this is keep collecting relics.
When you go to the shop redeem the purple character relics first. This will give some new characters and will also get you mega relic shards.
The characters relics should be open first so you have a higher chance of unlocking new characters. Mega relics have guaranteed new items so it’s best to use them last
I got this less than an hour after after the 100 characters achievement.

I found the green relics a much better option. They cost half as much, and give you multiple items, duplicates of which give the shards. After having 100 items and 100 characters each green relic was giving me 2-3 shards. I had 15 gold relics after hitting 100 characters and got 3 gold variants, so it was only minutes later for me.

I unlocked this achievement 1 minute after unlocking my 100th character.

The only way to unlock a Gold Character Variant is to keep opening Relics until you get one. It requires some luck but you will eventually get it. If you still need one after finishing the game, head to the Goldtropolis planet as the chests here are guaranteed to not have duplicates. You will need 400 Master Pieces to access Goldtropolis.

Gold character variants are randomly unlocked while opening purple Character Relics and gold Mega-Relics. It is recommended that if you have both types of relics in your inventory that open your Character Relics first. The reason for this is because you are guaranteed not to get a duplicate when you open your Mega-Relics, so you have a better chance at unlocking more characters.
Note: If you have not unlocked this achievement by the time you have access to Goldtropolis (have obtained 400 master pieces), every chest in that world has both red Super Item Relics and gold Mega-Relics.
