I can confirm that an alternate costume works. Also, you don't need a medal to unlock Free Play. I tested another Dojo, getting no medal at all, and Free Play still unlocked.

This can be attained after completing "Location 6 - The Lost City of Generals" which unlocks "Lord Garmadon (Jungle)". There are also 3 other variants that work:
- Lord Garmadon: Complete "Location 8 - Ninjago City Downtown"
- Lord Garmadon (Pajamas): Complete "The Collapsing Condo" Challenge Dojo
- Lord Garmadon (Office): Found in "Location 7 - The Unclimbale Mountain"
Select "The Collapsing Condo" Challenge Dojo from the Main Map and pick Garmadon as your character. Wave 1 will spawn from the centre, then Wave 2 from the left and Wave 3 from the right. If you manage to maintain your combo up to 100 you will also unlock:
