The Long Dark (EP)

For Whiteout, two things are helpful. I was able to complete it in 13 days, meaning of course that the challenge ends when you have all the required items. You don't need to make it until day 30. Second, I only rooted around the indoor locations in Coastal Highway and Desolation Coast for items. I found my rifle in the Stone Church in DC, but I've seen other folks say the rifle is a little further at the Broken Bridge, and sometimes only in the wave to the left of the Broken Bridge, by the waterfall. I was really fortunate, I think, as I was able to take down a bear right outside the quonset hut in CH with two well-placed rifle rounds, and those bastards have like 80 lbs of meat on them. AND I then killed a wolf who tried to stop me from making a run back with a quarter of the meat.

Also, the glitch for The Hunted: Part Two still seems to de-pop the bear if you enter any building aside from the Camp Office. I will say that with the guaranteed three rifle bullets there, you should have no trouble shooting the bear. It seems to retreat on its own every other location. The biggest issue I had with this challenge was the damn wolves, and the fact that I couldn't go into any buildings for rest. My advice is this: if you don't get at least one flare and some matches in the Trapper's Cabin where you begin, restart the challenge. And mend all your clothing in the Camp Office, as it's the only place you can do it safely. If you're willing to risk it, you might find a flare on the north side of the Derailment too, but this comes at the risk of a wolf. Finally, as much as possible, run after the bear. He sends wolves running.

And for reference, I camped outdoors at the Hunter's Cabin and at the Logging Camp in the broken-down building. The first was only to rest up and get a torch in case of wolves, and the latter was for the whole night. I stocked up on plenty of wood to burn in the pot-bellied stove.
