How to unlock the Cache Mastery achievement in The Long Dark - Definitive Guide

When finding the notes for the caches, you should always read them AND pick them up. I have had problems with caches not appearing on the map because I did not take the note with me. You must find the note before you can locate the cache. I can also confirm that the forest talker caches do NOT affect this achievement. Those caches have an achievement of their own.

Episode One

Cache #1 - There is a burned down school a couple houses down from the back of the bank in Milton. At the back of the building there is a chimney. Look down and you will see a note sticking out of the chimney that will inform you of the first cache location. That location will appear on your map. It is behind one of the houses between Greymother's house and the gas station.

Cache #2 - This note is found inside of a blue car in Milton on the way to the gas station from Greymother's house. The cache can be found behind the church area behind a fallen tree.

Cache #3 - The note for this cache is found inside of a house at the edge of Milton on top of a large hill. It is on the SW side of the town. You can find the cache for this note inside of the cave that is directly behind the radio tower. The cache is in the blue rocks. Keep in mind that this area of the Mountain Town map has changed since the Redux update.

Episode Two

Cache #1 - You can find the note inside of the Carter Dam. The note is on the second floor in the offices. When you come into the room where the first aid locker is, it is on the right from the door in the corner on a desk. It is labeled "Crumpled Note". You can find the cache for this note in Alan's Cave. This cave is on the right side of the map south of Carter Dam near the Hunter's Blind.

Cache #2 - The note can be found in one of the lake cabins on the SE side of Mystery Lake. It is an unlocked cabin that is next to the locked "Cabin #2". The cache will direct you to the clearcut area in the NW area of the map. It is kind of near the destroyed outlook path near a stump and fallen log. Check your map for a more direct location.

Cache #3 - You can find the note for this cache, labeled "Illegible Note" inside of the Forestry Lookout (the one that is not destroyed). The cache can be found near the entrance for Forlorn Muskeg near the rail tunnel.

Cache #4 - The cache note is in Forlorn Muskeg on the railway. At the last crashed section of train, close to the entrance of BR, there is a frozen body with a "Blood Soaked Note" at its feet. The cache is in the Broken Railroad region. When you reach the collapsed part of the tracks, go down onto the river. Follow the river all the way down and you will find it by some rocks on the right hand side.

Cache #5 - This note is easy to spot. Go to the hunting lodge in BR and look to the side of the entrance steps. The note is nailed to the side. You can find the cache by turning around, running across the small pond and go up the hill to your left immediately following the pond. Cache is on the side of a fallen tree that is sticking upwards at a diagonal.

Cache #6 - This note is found in BR. From the maintenance yard, run back up towards the railroad tracks. when you reach the tracks, turn to the right. You should be facing away from the side of the tracks that faces the FM region and instead facing the broken bridge area. You will see a stopped orange-ish train with a vehicle next to it. The note is in the vehicle. The cache is in the FM region. This is another cache that is difficult to explain where it is. Thankfully, you can follow your map marker to the cache. When entering FL from BR, you can follow the edge of ice to get to the cache from the area of the first derailed train.

Do you need to find them all in the same play through?

Apparently you need to find them in the same play through. On my first run through episodes 1 and 2, cache #1 in episode 2 bugged out on me so I was unable to get the achievement. I was recently feeling nostalgic for The Long Dark, so I started another Wintermute play through, I’ve grabbed the cache I was missing but did not yet get the achievement.

cache #4's note is REALLY hard to spot, took me ages. the corpse you are looking for is right under a large fallen tree that fell onto the train near the entrance to BR. maybe the devs moved it because I feel like saying its under a fallen tree is a really helpful landmark for finding it as I was looking at the cars too far west and was getting frustrated.

On #2, the color of the car is random. I got green and I've seen a video of their car being purple.

#DarkLord654164 No, I first found them in episode 2, and then I started the game from the beginning, and I found the rest in episode 1.

This is missable. You need to find the 3 caches in Milton before you finish the episode, and you can't go back to Milton from episode 2.

It's been a long time since I got this, but here's a video that should help you find all the caches. I didn't make the video.

I know one of them is missing but this guide should still list the location of the rest of them.

Since the achievement is unobtainable, it doesn't make sense to list them until we know which ones are actually required without assuming them.

The game was updated, dev patch notes indicate that the missing cache is Jeremiah's flare cache which is activated when asking him about "Flares" when his trust is high enough, This achievement has been unlocked by 2 gamers so it is no longer "unobtainable" Now we just need a good step by step guide explaining how to obtain it.

Missable & Glitched since the December 2018 patch

I got all the caches in Episode One but the quest didn't complete for me so I didn't get the trophy, though I didn't have any issues in Episode Two.

Episode 1 video by Meytny Edits:

Please note that you can no longer please Grey Mother, because this cache is no longer in the game as you now have a highway robbery quest instead with supplies.

You can miss the trophy!
In the second episode of the game, after you save Jeremy from the bear, he will ask you to go to the dam for medicine. On the dam you need to read the message about the cache (a note on the second floor, on one of the tables) + an optional note in the trash can, in the toilet (on the first floor). An icon for Alan's cache should appear on the map (next to the dam itself in Alan's cave). This must be done before you talk to Jeremy about the cache with torches (the option opens after a certain trust in Jeremy). It is better to do this right away - on your first visit to the dam. Otherwise, Alan's cache does not appear on the map. Tested on an old save, but after patch 1.29.

To get the last cache in the second episode, you need to gain Jeremy's trust so that he gives a "quest" with old torches.

Almost all resources write that in the first episode there are 4 caches, in the second - 6. This was the case before. At the time of writing this clue, there are 3 caches in the first episode. Video guide to finding them.
There are 6 caches in the second episode, but the information itself from various resources may confuse you. A text guide to all the caches (and more) in the second episode, at this point in time.
