How to unlock the Deep Forest achievement in The Long Dark - Definitive Guide

Of note (because I blew it), this must be done AT A CAMPFIRE (not an indoor stove). I don't know if fire barrel (such as the one at the radio tower) work. I'd just stick to a campfire. I did this in a separate run so I didn't waste 3 days worth of firewood when it wasn't necessary.

The best way to do this is to plan in advance, get all your firewood and food to a certain place, and then light the world on fire. The best place to do this is in a cave, so that the wind doesn't shift and blow your little fire out.

My suggestion would be to do this at Desolation Point. At the top of the map is a cave to the left of Broken Bridge. It's a deep cave where you can set up your fire and know it'll stay lit. Here's a map of Desolation Point:

https://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/intothelongdark/images/...

There are three good things about this location:

1-It's right next to Abandoned Mine No. 5. This is has a LOT of coal lying on the ground. I found around 15 wandering through the mine from beginning to end once. Each lump of coal is 1 hour.

2-It's very close to the Hibernia Processing facility. On the bottom floor of the main building is a workshop with some tools. I didn't find a hatchet there (starting from scratch presented that problem) but I did find a hacksaw and a heavy hammer (good if you want to make improvised tools at the nearby forge).

3-There are up to 5 deer carcasses in this rather small map, so you can stock up on fresh meat instead of hunting for food, either the live or the canned variety.

I would suggest getting everything prepped before you start, but that's up to you. You can only put at most 12 hours worth of fuel on the fire at once, so you'll need to keep an eye on it.

Yup, just read it, after four days of "hey, I got this" while keeping a furnace lit and wondering why it doesn't work :)

I also did this, indoors at the gas station at the Coastal Highway. Definitely does not work indoors. Wasted so much time...hahaha.

Yes, definitely sleep and refuel. It just has to stay lit the whole time.

This may be glitched for some, I had my camp fire going for 95 hours and still no popping. (Was in a cave)

To give an idea of the supply buildup you need, the following fuel got me about 80 non-stop hours of fire:

9 books
7 cedar firewood
30 coal
3 fir firewood
25 reclaimed wood
135 sticks

All these supplies will weigh you down a ton - need to make regular trips to a cave to drop off fire supplies. If you use story mode, pick up fire items as you go, stockpile throughout an episode, you'll likely be able to get the achievement right before finishing off the chapter. Every chapter has an infinite fire hub, other than the last chapter of episode 2, that you can use to fulfill needs while stockpiling fire fuel.

You need to so this achievement in a cave - fire blowing out RNG will very likely get you otherwise.

I'll throw my hat in the ring for what I found to be a very easy solution thanks to the Errant Pilgrim update (so you must be playing Survival Mode). There is a new location to explore called Bleakt Inlet. You can access it through either the Ravine or through Forlorn Muskeg. Either way, you're looking for a location to the south called Last Resort Cannery. You can find a map of the entire location here: https://gameplay.tips/guides/6122-the-long-dark.html

What's great about this spot is that there are plenty of pallets and other wooden objects for you to destroy for reclaimed wood. There are also some cedar and fir logs laying around. And there is plenty of food too find in the immediate area as well. You're looking for a little room by the whaling boat. It's outside, but has walls on all four sides and double-doors that you can close and open. There are open windows, but this didn't seem to impact my fire via wind. There's also a pre-made bed on the floor for your convenience.

Be forewarned that there are wolves that constantly roam around this area, but if you're playing on Pilgrim (and I think you should be; why make this any harder?) they will leave you alone. If you have a rifle, you can even take a few out for food if you want.

I just started my fire and stoked it to maximum capacity (12 hrs) and then did other things in the area. I mended clothing to build that skill, took potshots with my revolver at wolves (I already maxed my rifle skill and still needed to get the revolver skill up; it's a game), and collected materials as need. This is a great setup, and there's little chance you can fail here.

Bonus: as far as I know, this is the only place in the game where you can find a ammo bench. You'll need this to develop you gunsmithing skill.

I just want to make sure people that are playing the single-player game (wintermute) are not wasting their time. According to the other guys it's not just a campfire that will allow you to get this achievement, but I can tell you what won't work and that's the burn barrels.

I first tried getting this achievement in a burn barrel on episode 2 and I accidentally let it go out, though I was pretty sure it was over three days, but carried on anyway. Now on episode 3 I spent a solid 5 days at Signal Hill using the burn barrel up there and the achievement didn't pop.

My conclusion is that burn barrels do not count for the achievement. Probably best that you just use a campfire.

You will need a fair bit of pre-planning for this.
For a few days go out collecting as much flammable stuff as you can, Fir/Cedar firewood are great for fires and are abundant through tree limbs which are infinite. Coal will be especially good here however there is a finite source of them (though there is more than enough that spawns in for it to not really matter). Breaking wooden furniture etc.

This HAS to be done with a campfire (no stoves or barrels) meaning you have to do it outside. So find a cave to stop the wind extinguishing it, move all your timber to said cave with enough food to wait it out and keep the fire lit.

The fire caps at 12 hours so putting more fuel on top of that is a waste. Go out and hunt for food in the meantime or sleep/pass the time.

Another thing you can try is doing it in a concealed place way from wind outside a cave where the temp drops below 0oC. this will make the fuel burn longer and make it more efficient... If you want to be especially stingy with your fire supply.

This is also a great way to knock off another achievement called Beneath a Starry Sky which is basically survive 3 consecutive nights outside

Enjoy your 50 charcoal after you complete the achievement

Make sure you have enough fuel and that it's a campfire, thus stoves, barrels etc. don't count. I recommend you do this in the church in Mountain town, just outside of Millton because it’s inside so there is no wind or weather to take into account and there is lots of fuel around.

This is done quite simply - we drag the firewood into the cave and burn it until it stops (3 days).

He stoked the forge for 74 hours. They didn't give me a trophy. All you need is an ordinary street fire. It is better to do it with fully pumped fires. Then the firewood burns 50% longer, which means you need to collect one third less firewood.

It is better to have level 5 of the “making a fire” skill because... On it, spruce wood burns for 2:15, and cedar wood for 1:30.
I did it in the “Mysterious Lake” location, in a cave in “Dave’s Quiet Glade” because... not far from my base "Tour Center Administration".
In addition to firewood, take food and a sleeping bag with you.
You cannot put wood on a fire for more than 12 hours.
I also advise you not to burn the fire idle, but to combine it with boiling water and cooking, thereby making reserves that will be needed for 500 days anyway.

It is done in any open cave, preferably in which there is coal and a lot of logs nearby. Stoves and fire hoses do not count.
