How to unlock the Hard Times achievement in The Long Dark - Definitive Guide

All of these will be marked on your map once you find the corresponding memos to them. The trick is finding the memos. There are 3 and can be found in the following locations:

Late employee: Once you get into the infirmary after going through a small window, looking for meds as part of the story, take a right and go through the doorway. Immediately to your right on the ground is the memo. This one is a little tricky to find. The marker will be down south by the barn at the jailors residence. If you go behind and to the left of the barn that has the truck in it, you will find a path that will lead you to a fallen tree you can walk down into the valley below onto a frozen river. Follow the river and you will find the guard. He will have a key that opens a lockbox back at the prison. It is under a bed in a building next to the infirmary. The one with the 3 lockers that require keys to open. Opening this lockbox completes this rumor.

Aggressive Wolf: After the infirmary you should have a key that unlocks a door in the prison wall to the right of the main gate. This is your path outside of the prison. When you open the door it leads into a small room with another door leading outside. Behind the door you entered from there is a locker you can search that holds the memo. The area to search will be in the north east of the map. Go to the area and you're looking for a cave. In the cave you'll find a body with a note that completes this one.

Suspicious person: After chapter 1 you will be tasked with restoring power. Following the road from the prison south and west towards the substation, under a tower you should see a truck. Inside the truck on the dashboard is the third memo. The marker will lead you to the south east to the brick layers retreat. Behind the cabin there is a large rock that has a lockbox next to it kind of hidden in the snow. This has a note in it that will mark a prepper stash. The end of this rumor is in that stash.

There is a point of no return once you get detonators but the game will warn you when you reach it by telling you to finish any tasks before returning to the prison.

The trophy involves completing 3 small quests, united by the game itself within one additional task.

1) The first rumor is that the employee was late.

According to the plot, during the first chapter of the episode, you will find yourself in the infirmary, where you will look for medicine for the warden. On the 2nd floor of the infirmary, go to the doctor's office. To the right of the door below is a note about a missing worker, picking it up will activate the quest.

After picking up the note, all key quest markers will be marked on the map. Go to the point indicated on the map (southeast of the map, next to the jailer’s residence) and go down the fallen tree into the gorge, in the depths of which the corpse of the missing worker will lie. Search the corpse, pick up the key to the safe.

The safe is located under the central bed in the room on the prison grounds, through the roof of which we entered the infirmary. Return to the indicated room, open the safe, take the contents - the quest is completed.

2) The second rumor is an extremely aggressive wolf.

After visiting the infirmary according to the plot of the first chapter, we receive the key to the main gate of the prison. In the room through which the player leaves the prison location, there is a floor locker in which you can find a note telling about the appearance of an aggressive wolf in the vicinity of the prison.

After picking up the note, all key quest markers will be marked on the map. Go to the point indicated on the map (north-eastern part of the map, along the road to the abandoned mines), we find a cave, inside of which a corpse will lie. Search the corpse, read the note - the quest is completed.


3) Rumor three - a suspicious person

Second chapter. The player is given the task of restoring electricity. On the way to the power plant, you will pass by the old substation (southwestern part of the map), next to which there is a patrol car. We search the car; on the panel there is a note about a suspicious person, picking it up will activate the last quest.

After picking up the note, all key quest markers will be marked on the map. Go to the point indicated on the map (east of the map, mason’s hut next to the frozen lake),
we go around the rock behind the hut, find a cache with a note about the location of the bunker (will be marked on the map).

We go north from the foreman's clearing, climb a small hill to the rocks, find a bunker, and go down. We search the bunker, find a note - the quest is completed.
