How to unlock the Paradise Lost achievement in The Long Dark - Definitive Guide

You get this achievement for completing Chapter 2 of Episode 1, which begins after you climb out of the ravine.

Search the area around the plane, making sure you grab anything to eat. You won't find anything Astrid-related, so keep moving, because it is cold outside and you will get hypothermia fairly quickly.

The path you'll follow is linear, so you're unlikely to get lost. Keep a brisk pace, but grab any food you find and enough firewood for a decent fire. You'll come to a clearing with a frozen pond and a bunch of rabbits hopping around. Grab some of the stones laying about.

You'll want to kill a few rabbits here. To do that, crouch down and aim at a rabbit from as close as you can get. If you hit the rabbit, it will be stunned for a couple seconds. If you can get to the stunned rabbit you can grab it and snap it's neck. Get at least two rabbits before you move on. Note that there is also a deer carcass nearby, so look for that.

A while down the path, you'll come to an interesting interior cave. Enter it, and navigate to where there's a hole in the ceiling and a small carpet of snow. Build a Campfire there, so you can warm up, cook your rabbit and deer, and (since you built on the snow) melt and boil some water. If the cave is too dark, try lighting a match. After you build your fire, you can use torches.

When you leave the cave by the other exit, you'll encounter a wolf feasting at a deer carcass. Do NOT attempt to engage the wolf! Give it a wide berth and sneak past it, even if you have a torch.

Keep going down the hill, and you will soon reach a road. And cars!!! Search the cars, but WATCH OUT! There is another wolf on this stretch of road, and it will stalk you if you still have any meat in your pack. The cars are your friend here. Use them to hide from the wolf if it comes after you. Alternatively, you can try to build a fire outside, and the wolf will keep its distance, OR you can drop some of your meat as a decoy.

Up ahead is a bridge with many cars. Search them all, but be quick. It is a cold night, and you can't stay outside for too long. Your best bet is to keep moving until you reach the wood church, which is maybe a mile down the road from the bridge. It will feel like a long way. If you are getting too fatigued, you may need to rest, which you can do inside any of the cars along the road. Bear in mind, you'll need to build a fire nearby if you stop to sleep, and you'll have to wake up to warm up frequently.

Once you reach the church, you are close to Milton. Beware another wolf enjoying a meal out front. Inside the church is everything you should need to spend the night, except food. Stay here until morning, and finish the trek to Milton at first light.

You'll pass a woodlot on the left, cross a bridge, and see the town right ahead. Enter it, and the achievement should pop.

I think they've changed the game quite a bit with a recent update. After the frozen rabbit lake (which has a campfire) I immediately passed the wolf feasting on a deer carcass followed by a radio antenna then arrived in Milton. No cave, cars, roads or bridges!

The crash site tutorial is also a lot shorter now. I originally played it back in July when I bean dived the game and it included melting snow, brewing rosehip tea and stripping a deer carcass. Now you spend a single night in the cave then it's off to the plane. Virtually no preparation for the journey ahead. :(
