How to unlock the How Did You Do That? achievement in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum - Definitive Guide

Hello everyone, I don’t post guides often but in this case I had to make an exception. There are already 2 guides for this achievement. I have read both of them carefully and there is a lot of conflicting and even unnecessary information in those that will only complicate things for no reason. I have used the exact same method that I am about to describe for 2 other games with “No Deaths” Achievements last year. Planet of Lana and Bramble: The Mountain King. This method has a 100% success rate!

The Lord of the Rings: Gollem is a very buggy and stressful game and trying to obtain this achievement the ‘legit’ way is near impossible due to huge frame drops, and very inconsistent movement mechanics. To reduce frame drops to an extent, play the game on Performance Mode (yes it will make the game look even worse, but it is the most consistent mode). So, if you want to get this achievement the least stressful way, continue reading smile

Approximately 30 minutes ago I unlocked the achievement performing the following easy steps. You will unlock both the “Nervous Hands” and “How Did You Do That?” achievements this way.

The achievement states that you are not allowed to die even once during your entire playthrough. This includes: being discovered, being caught, your companion (the Grashneg) dying or you dying. You are however allowed to be chased by enemies, as long as they don’t catch you there is no issue. DO NOT reload the (previous) checkpoint at any time. To be safe, do not reload/restart the chapter either.

The steps:

1. When you see the eye of Sauron icon at the bottom right of your screen, it means that the game created a checkpoint. When you are at a difficult part and you see this icon appear, press start and quit to the main menu.
2. When you arrive at the main menu, press the Xbox Guide button, hover over the game, press start and press quit. This creates a cloud save.
3. Start the game again and press ‘continue’ in the main menu. This will continue your game.
4. If any of the events stated above “The Steps” occur, press start to quickely pause the game, press the Xbox Guide button, hover over the game and press start, click on ‘My Games and Add-ons’ and press on your profile picture at the right of your screen. You are in the Save Data section of the game. Press “Delete Local Save” press “Delete from Console” DO NOT click on “Delete Everywhere!!!”. This will close the game.
5. Start the game again, the game will synchronize with your manually made cloud save, let it complete. Afterwards, press ‘continue’ in the main menu and continu right where you made your cloud save. The system does not register your ‘failure’ this way.
6. Rinse and repeat the above steps for the rest of the game.

There is no need to go offline or to cancel the synchronization or anything like that. These methods might even void the achievement if done incorrect.

Trust me, this will 100% get the job done! If you have any questions about this if things are unclear, leave a comment or message me on Xbox. You are welcome! Good luck my fellow achievement hunters!

Note 1: While you can theoretically replay all chapters via Chapter Select on the main menu, and redo each chapter without dying to unlock this achievement, I have yet to see confirmation from any reports that this method of getting this achievement 100% works. I therefore recommend that you just couple this achievement with your second run, on a new game, to ensure you do the entire game in order without dying and unlock this achievement.

Note 2: Just to clarify, being caught during a stealth section also counts as dying, so you can't die nor can you be caught during a stealth section.

This achievement will understandably be pretty intimidating to most. On top of that, you'll likely die/get caught dozens and dozens of times during your first playthrough. Most of that will come down to learning the levels and dealing with some of the platforming controls and stealth requirements (i.e. mostly the game's fault). Doing this achievement on a second playthrough will have the following benefits:

  • You should've be collecting any collectibles or miscellaneous achievements. This will cut down on exploration and risk of dying
  • You should be making a beeline right for the story objective every time, minimizing the length of each chapter
  • Your first playthrough will come with a lot of learnings of the levels and experience with what to expect from the platforming and stealth sections
The other important thing to note is that, if you do die/get caught you don't need to replay the entire chapter over again. You can pause and choose to Restart Level, but this doesn't start the chapter over. It just starts you from the beginning of the section you're on in the chapter. This allows you to break up this achievement into much more manageable sections, rather than worrying about needing to do an entire chapter flawlessly (especially some of the long chapters).

Lastly, there is an offline exploit you can use to "back up" your save at checkpoints throughout chapters. Here's how it works, for those who have never used offline cloud save backups for achievements:

  1. Start the chapter and play through successfully until a checkpoint where you feel you'd like to make a backup, such as if a tough part is coming up next that you're likely to die or get caught during.
  2. Press the guide button on your controller, go to the rightmost tab, down to Settings, go to Network Settings and choose Go Offline
  3. What you're going to do now is progress through the level offline. Your cloud save will be unaffected since you're offline, and will be your "backup" in case you mess up
  4. If you die/get caught and need to reload your backup save, close the game, press button-page.png on the game tile and choose Manage Games and Addons. Go down to Save Data, and then choose to "Delete Local," which should be the only option. This will delete your local save only, which is the save where you died. Now go back into Network Settings and choose Go Online. Relaunch the game, and you'll see the cloud save sync. You should be back at your backed up checkpoint. Resume from (2) above to try again
  5. If you succeed and get farther into the level, to another checkpoint, and decide you want to again back up this more recent save, leave the game on, go into Network Settings, and choose Go Online. Let the game run for a bit while back online, so it sees you online. Now force close the game app while online at your new checkpoint. This will force your cloud save to update with the most recent checkpoint. You can then relaunch the game and resume from (2) above to progress farther
With those steps, you can go to the full extreme of backing your save up after every single checkpoint. However, that's quite excessive and will quickly become tedious. Use your discretion though, as some chapters are quite easy and may not require any backing up, whereas some such, such as Chapter 5 and its cart escape sequence, may warrant repeated backups.

Unfortunately, there is no way to track which sections of which chapters you've completed without dying. It's therefore recommended to do the game in order from start to finish on your second run, and don't move on until you've finished each chapter without dying or getting caught. You'll likely notice that many chapters are significantly easier after having played them once already, and especially now that you're more used to the controls.

So reading through some comments on various sites and being confused on what was allowed and what wasn't, here's how I unlocked the achievement:

Most important thing is keep your cloud save up-to-date and without any deaths!

For those who don't know, you can force a cloud save at any checkpoint provided you dashboard out and quit the game from there (Middle button -> home -> menu button -> quit)

You can change the status of your system by pressing Middle button -> settings (under the Profile & System tab) -> Network settings -> Go on/offline.

You want to play the majority of this game offline because you never know when a bug is going to hit like when I performed a backward jump and got launched into the abyss because the wall behind me disappeared or when I went 90 degrees from where I was looking and found the ground after a long fall. When you feel like you've made a lot of progress and hit a check point, you want to switch your system to being online, wait a few seconds (personally I waited until my system showed being connected to the router before going back to the game), and then force a cloud save. Relaunch the game and you should be back where you left off. I don't advise trying to force a cloud save very far from a checkpoint because you'll have to redo everything you did between the checkpoint and when you cloud saved.

If you died while offline, go ahead and quit the game... THEN MAKE SURE TO DELETE THE SAVE! Since you're offline the only option it should give you is to Delete from Console. There will be no mention of deleting your cloud save. After it's deleted, then go back online and start the game. During the Daeldalic logo, you should see everything becoming synchronized. Continue the game and go back offline.

If for some reason your cloud save ends up with a death (I had a continue start me right in front of an elf at the beginning of chapter 10) you can start the chapter over from the main menu. I don't know if you can start the individual sections of each chapter over that way, but I got the achievement starting chapter 10 over again from the beginning, so I would advise going back to the main menu if you die online and restart the chapter to help with remembering where you died.

Note that I got the achievement following these steps after patch 2.2 in August 2023.

Good luck and good patience, you'll need both for this game

First of all I state that the achievement is not bugged or glitched. I will write a short guide and advice for anyone who wants to try it.
The first thing to keep in mind is that the game will always save at the moment of your death, so in advance it is advisable to force save to load the cloud** every now and then so as to avoid not really doing long sections of the chapter or game.
2 special and very important precautions
1. The first is that loading from checkpoint will invalidate the achievement
2. the second is that if we restart chapter, it will invalidate the achievement!
Let's move on to the more serious stuff instead. So first of all keep in mind that the game doesn't have any kind of glitch, the game doesn't crash or freeze so your run will be spotless, the best that can happen is that there will be some enemies patrolling in some area but nothing special.
Let's move on to the moment of death and I thank a friend of mine for pointing this out to me and keep in mind that it will be very important and vital otherwise it will F**K everything else.
In practice at the moment of death as we know trueachievement or playstation players for their respective parts we use the cloud trick or in the case of ps the usb, in our case we will delete the cloud locally and restart the game, when you will see that the game will start the synchronization, you will have to press B to cancel it, you probably have to keep an eye on it because it will do it 2 times, THIS STEP IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT OTHERWISE I REPEAT F**K EVERYTHING!

So once the synchronization has been cancelled, you can resume with continue from the last time your cloud** saved.

Honestly, I did the campaign 4 times, I tried restarting the chapter every time I died and it didn't work, I tried doing the cloud when I died and it didn't work but with this method of doing the cloud and unsynchronizing it worked very well.
And nothing for the rest I wish you good luck and if you need anything, you can very well contact me on my account.

Good Luck Smeagol's rockrockrock

**(To delete the cloud for anyone who does not know, (without quitting the game) middle button, press the start button on the game and go to manage games and addons, go to select the saved data, select the save and delete it locally not everywhere please!)

I will never play this title but after watching its gameplay I think this achievement should have been called "We Hates Us!" instead.

Who do you need to cancel the cloud synchronization? You don’t have to do this for the ‘no deaths’ achievements in Bramble the Mountain King and Planet of Lana. The cloud save method with synchronization has always worked.

Does closing the game at any point affect the achievement?

Then how do you cloud save with your method? Every time I've used the cloud save I go offline at some point to progress, and if I want to save my progress I close the game and restart It online so it gets saved on the cloud, so that if I die when offline I delete my local save and sync my cloud save.
In your steps you restart the game, doesn't that count as closing the game?

Downvoted because of inaccurate information:

Unfortunately there are glitches galore; died during cutscenes, fell through solid objects, climbing a wall then became unstuck, jumped over a pot and got stuck in the air so upon landing assumed it was a long drop etc

If you have a cloud save then delete a local save but then stop syncing with the cloud, there’s no data to load from so you restart from the beginning.

Best advice I can offer is go slow and go offline often until comfortable you have progressed far enough without dying that it’s safe to go back online to force a save. I’ve failed enough of my own fault because of not going offline at crucial moments (swing pole to the bell in Ch.7, cross the River Ch. 7) to set me back but when trying to remain online to force a save there are enough glitches to make this a nightmare.

Try to go online only when it’s almost impossible to die and are no “insta-kill” moments and hope it saves.

Have they had any additional updates to fix these glitches or did they basically abandon the game?

Pausing can help you get through the game without dying - closing the game or going to the main screen before the death or failure screen is shown.
if you already understand that you are flying into the abyss, an orc will grab you, you could not grab the ledge - pause - close the game, and so you can press continue to return to the nearest checkpoint
If you receive a lot of damage, you can also restore your health and roll back to the checkpoint through the main screen.
With an active PS PLUS subscription, you can periodically transfer your saves to the cloud or to a flash drive in the PS4 version.
