How to unlock the Scout achievement in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum - Definitive Guide

Note: This achievement appears to be bugged, but potentially in a good way. The vantage points that people have found, and the timing of when this achievement unlocked, varies quite a bit person to person. It may just mean that a set amount are required versus finding all of them. Read through the below guide, and you should get enough to unlock this achievement by the time you finish the game.

Despite the achievement image and description seemingly implying that there are towers or structures you need to climb for vantage points in this game, that isn't really the case at all. This achievement is referring to various places in the game where the camera pans over an area to show it to you. While some of these are at the tops of things you can climb, they aren't always.

This achievement's exact requirements are a bit difficult to pin down. The reason for that is because, for me at least, this achievement unlocked early in Chapter 8, when I reached the bell tower with Mell and the game did a story related camera pan of the area to show it to me. What's odd is that there are more of these story related camera pans after that, so I'm unsure why that would've triggered the achievement. There are also more towers to climb after Chapter 8 that have camera-panning scans of the area.

What I am relatively certain about are that the bulk of the optional scouting places are in Chapter 7, and that they are almost assuredly the main things that count for this achievement. Right at the beginning of the chapter, you'll get an objective to locate the hidden river path, and you'll need to climb out of the main garden area to do so. You'll have to sneak past a massive amount of elves in the next area, and it's in this area where you can find a few optional high points that'll give you a quick camera pan of the nearby area of elves. I found at least two in this area - one up a ladder near where you start the area, and one up a pillar you can climb via vines on its sides a bit later. There are also two more in the King's Garden area at the end of Chapter 7, and another in Chapter 9. Those three places are shown in the video below. It's worth noting that I didn't find any of the three places shown in the video, and I still unlocked this achievement at the start of Chapter 8. It's still worth getting the ones shown below though. Full credit to the creator of the video.

Here's another video (full credit to the creator) that shows some other vantage points. The first two are two of the three I found in that first section of Chapter 7. There is some overlap in the middle with the previous video, but then the last one shown is a story one in Chapter 10. That's obviously very inconsistent since I unlocked the achievement in Chapter 8, others unlocked it in Chapter 7, and they didn't unlock it until Chapter 10.

So, while I unfortunately can't prescribe the exact vantage points that all count towards this achievement, my main recommendations are:

  • Every time you see a prompt to "Look" by pressing button-y.png, do so
  • Get as many vantage points in the two areas of Chapter 7 mentioned above
  • Get the one in Chapter 9 mentioned above
Doing that, coupled with the story-related ones, should get you think achievement before finishing the game.

Not entirely accurate. This achievement unlocked for me during Chapter 8 when I reached the bell tower area with Mell, and the game automatically panned across the area to show it to me.
