How to unlock the Star Messenger achievement in The Messenger - Definitive Guide

Here's my take on this achievement. You need to beat the race that begins at the end of the DLC with a score of 5:0. This is one of the hardest, but with my tip hopefully you can make it. After watching several videos, reading tips, nobody seemed to have a reliable method for round 5.

Before we get to the video, here's text version. Round 1~3 is easy and you can get it with some practice easily, so check the video if you need help with that. Round 4 & 5, I will describe briefly in text format. Check the video for further reference.

Round 4:
Start with a shuriken to kill the enemy on the right. Rope dart on the ring, but keep slashing to get any projectiles. Dart attach to the wall and climb up. Duck below the first ball&chain. Rope dart to the enemy, and then to the wall. Climb up and rope dart across the lanterns. Climb up again. Throw three shurikens, hopefully killing them all. If any enemies are left slash as you go left and then climb up.
Rope dart on the ring, hopefully dodging between the saws. Climb up. Rope dart on the first green enemy. Jump and glide, downward slashing continuously to get to the left wall. Climb up and rope dart on the ring to finish.

Round 5:
You need to constantly move without any stop to the momentum. If you stop for even a second, it's a fail.
Jump to the right off the edge. Rope dart on the ring and then hold A immediately to glide. When you see the first lantern, let go of A to stop gliding. (Slash lantern, jump) x4 (NO GLIDING!!!)
After 4th lantern, start gliding, do a downward stab on the enemy's projectile, and keep gliding. As you glide down, jump and adjust your gliding speed so that you are collecting all the yellow things as you go down. Downward stab the lantern, rope dart, let go of A, slash lantern, jump, slash lantern, jump, rope dart on the ring, rope dart to the wall (if needed, in the video I actually miss the ring rope dart, but rope dart to the wall saved me) Jump up to the top of the wall, rope dart to the end for finish!

Congratulation! Here's video:

This achievement is awful. Why they are asking us to do things we have never done before in the whole game I don’t know. And the fact that you have to start again each time you fail the 5th one... This gets my vote for the worst achieving of the year so far.

So I came back to it today, got through it on my third attempt 😅 it's amazing what a good sleep can do for a frustrated gamer! Starting to glide after the 4th lantern is critical if you want to clear the first section, the second is much easier to improvise your way through. Just keep yourself as high as possible and mash rope dart like a crazy person if you're anywhere near the end!

Congratulations. Although it is definitely bullshit achievement, it was incredibly satisfying to get it done.

When you see the first lantern, let go of A to stop gliding.
That helped me finally get it. Most important tip of the whole guide!

Congrats :) Most guide just said something like spam the A and X button which sometimes worked but just wasn't consistent, so I tried to find a method that worked every time as long as the player didn't mess up the timing.

I spent hours on this achievement trying to time my jumps with my attacks, I didn't realize you can just press both buttons at the same time during the first section. Once I did that it took like 15 minutes. I hope this helps whoever is struggling with this.

That achievement really was a pain in the butt !!!
Had to work on that over multiple days as to not get so frustrated that I'd just rage quit.

Thanks for the great guide !!

Once I switched to spamming X and A at the same time I got it within 2 to 3 tries. You just gotta be fast since the enemies and lanterns come quick. Almost mashing those buttons..

One thing to add on the last stage - don't sweat perfection on what you hit or how - just keep the momentum up and it will carry you along. It's key to hit *something* - it "charges" your cloudstep - but as long as you keep the high movement speed up, you can fix just about everything else.

Smashing X and sometimes letting go of A to adjust on the 5th round is definitely the way, got it on 4th try

It's so strange but I don't know how to consistently downward slash when under a pressure situation like this and that's despite completing the entire game and getting all the seals.

What is the actual button presses you need to do to make sure you do that each time you're above a lantern for example?

@DaveOwl: It's press X while gliding (holding A)

auuuf .. 5th run is a nightmare, what do you recommend? bouncing while glidding or stop glidding and try it with double jump. I always lose the momentum at the first part. @DaveOwl Do u know how many hours left until it will be removed . I am in the same situation as you . Lol

If you lose momentum, it's because you hit the ground or took damage. Need to jump-slash objects (A+X) to continue momentum. If you lose momentum any time before the last hook, restart, it's over. Don't overthink, it's just a button-press timing test, not a platforming test.

I think my error is that I'm holding down A to glide all the time but actually you have to let go of A, slash with X and then jump and when you get to the next lantern or enemy, slash with X again then jump and so on, right?

I literally pressed X+A at the same time for each "bounce". Yes, you need to fully release A to stop gliding before the X+A slash will work properly otherwise you'll get a downward slash instead.

Thanks. I'm really finding this difficult, I just can't get my head around it and I actually thought I was good at this game having done everything else. It just won't go in my mind and my fingers can't execute what I need to do, lol!

@DaveOwl: Correct, I mention that in the video. You have to fully stop gliding and then X, A * 4 it's pretty quick, almost like X+A but it is quick succession. Basically, let go A, XAXAXAXAA(hold)X is the first part after the initial glide.

It definitely is not an easy achievement.

I don't get this at all. I can't keep my momentum going after the 4th lantern. This shit is frustrating

@Clutch Rino: Are you starting to glide after cloud jump from 4th lantern? While holding A to keep the glide going, hit X to downward slash on an enemy projectile to bounce upwards and keep the momentum going. Cloud jump from here and adjust your glide as needed for the second section.

My tip for anyone who wants to do this horrible achievement :p:
"Make sure the first hit after first glide is high enough so you can get over the first hill. After that fly and hit anything you can and you should be okay."

quick question. why is this marked as missable? in the video you use chapter select, just asking because i'd rather avoid a second playthrough of the dlc.

@GoyetteQC it happens all the way at the end of the DLC, which means you have to get to the end just to try this. If you win this race with any score other than 5:0, the game continues and this achievement is missed. You have to play the DLC again up to the point where the race begins to try again.

Agreed, I'm usually a completionist and all around achievement whore but this is ludicrous and can remain locked I think. If they had only put in a quick "retry round" option you'd preserve the challenge and strip away all of the frustration associated with having to go back to the start over and over. Running through the trivial parts and getting no real practice at the one difficult bit that the game hasn't prepared you for in any way, shape or form is fucking dull and a waste of my time.

This achievement was a complete nightmare. Glad to say it’s over finally.

My only tip if you’re struggling on round 5 is to try changing your controller grip so that your fingers are occupying the X, A and B buttons. Just using my thumb was extremely inconsistent for the very fast alternating between jumping and slashing required here. I got much better at executing the first slash jumping section holding my controller this way, such that I got a lot more practice for the second section than I was when only using my thumb for button input.

I. Did. It. Yes!! At last and yes the time I did it when it clicked into place, it was easy! I think I even did it faster than most videos I have seen.

Thanks to everyone for helping me with this. I actually saw a video on YouTube of someone showing this section with the controller inputs (PS pad but same) and it really helped, particularly when I slowed it down to 0.25x speed. I managed to get each section properly into my head that way, perfecting the first part and building from there.

Phew! :)

I want to address the last room number 5.
I've seen a number of strategies but nothing solid, my solution involves a number of things that improves chances of success. Doing these little changes resulted in me getting the acheivement 1st try.

The first is the most obvious, the button mapping currently is hampering success. The time you spend switching your thumb from cn_A to cn_X and cn_B opens up windows for error because of the high speed movement of the task. To combat this I went into the Xbox Accessories app and mapped cn_X to cn_LB and cn_B to cn_RB. So that no finger movement is necessary.

Next I went and found the dev intended strategy for beating this by watching the Dark Messenger on someone elses video. What I found was very interesting, the Dark Messenger glides the entire time. Given he does easy strategies for the other 4 rooms for this acheivement I figured this was the way to go.

With this gliding strategy in mind going into this task becomes easier. Since hitting objects below you gives a sudo jump you only need to hit every second object. The cloud step can then be used to skip having to hit every second object, thus increasing your chances of success. Even with missing the rings for added boost forward success is still possible.

Button mapping was the key to my eventual success so thanks for this. I used RT for the grapple and LT for the shuriken.

This achievement is missable. In order to get this achievement you have to win the race against Dark Messenger with perfect score.
First 4 rounds are quite easy, reaching monsters with Rope Dart before Dark Messenger can give you a real advantage. Fifth round is the real challenge, you have very little margin to outrace your shadow, but it quite slowdown a bit, just avoid touching the floor after your first jump, you have to be fast hitting on lamps (or monsters) and jump to keep the peace.
I made a short video the first time I succeeded. I miss step a couple of times in round 4 and 5, but Dark Messenger slowdown a bit every round, that give you a chance to beat him with perfect score.

Round 1: 0:28
Round 2: 0:42
Round 3: 0:59
Round 4: 1:17
Round 5: 1:46

Good luck

Not much else is needed to add to these great solutions that are already on the achievement solution. Thanks all for your tips, they really helped!

Keep in mind that this achievement can be missed, but the race can be restarted when going back into the DLC upon completion without having to redo the whole thing (that is how I got mine).

I just wanted to add some words of encouragement for those struggling. As others have said the first 3 parts are pretty easy, the 4th part is a bit tricky and the 5th part just takes some practice. Don't be discouraged, keep trying and you can do it! As you can see in my video, you don't have to have a perfect run at all, the main thing is getting the first set of jumps in right in the last part.
