How to unlock the Aperture Science achievement in The Orange Box - Definitive Guide

I would begin by saying that if you decide to tackle this achievement please be warned that it is one of the most challenging around. It's by no means impossible but if you choose to pursue it prepare for many hours of frustration and at times outright anger. However, this is nicely balanced out by the great sense of pride you will feel when you finally win that last gold medal and the achievement unlocks.

You can of course use certain cheat codes (such as placing portals anywhere) and glitching tactics ('portal bumping') to make your life a good deal easier but you'll find no note of that here. If you wish to go down that road you will have to look it up yourself as this guide is purely for those who wish to win this achievement legitimately. I therefore hope what you find in this guide will help you as much as possible in your pursuit of this achievement.

Below you will firstly find a FAQ which contains what I believe will be some of the most commonly asked questions in regards to winning this achievement.

You will then see written mini-guides for each of the six Test Chambers which are in turn broken down into a further three subsections for portals, steps and time. The mini-guides are comprised of the target you must hit, a difficulty rating and some additional tips or tricks (if I can think of any which are useful!)

Finally there are eighteen Youtube video guides which correspond directly to my own mini-guides referenced above. You will see by reading my guides that I often refer to a certain part in the video by the time.

FAQ

1) In What Order Should I Play Through The Challenges?

It’s very much up to you but my advice contrary to the views of some others would be to take it chamber by chamber starting with portals, followed by steps and finally time. If you’ve not played Portal in a while it will take a little while to reacquaint yourself with certain techniques which will make winning the steps and at times even the portal gold medals tough at first. However, as you progress you will definitely find these become easier. The time challenges however, are by far the hardest to win gold medals on and it is best to split these up rather than to leave them all still to do at the end.

2) Are The Videos In Your Guide The Best Available?

Having spent many hours looking at different videos I would say they are the most helpful and straightforward when it comes to achieving the gold medals. You will also notice that the majority of the videos show the absolute maximum amount of portals, steps and time you can take to attain the gold medals. There are quicker methods out there but these are definitely the easiest ways to reach the target. However, if you are struggling don’t be afraid to look for alternative methods. Check out youtube and portalwalkthroughs.com but bear in mind that most of these are taken from the PC version of the game. Utilising certain PC-based tactics is close to impossible on the 360 version, in particular orientating yourself correctly to fire a portal as you emerge from a previous portal.

3) How Do I Reach The First Floor Portal From The Lift Entrance In Two Steps As Shown In the Least Steps Videos? It’s Impossible – I Always Take Three or Four!

It’s not impossible honestly. It’s simply a knack that will be like second nature given a little practice. What you have to do once the lift doors open is:
i) Place the portals in the areas as directed by the video. Remember the portal you will be entering should be placed on the floor directly outside the lift.
ii) Walk straightforward taking no more than two full steps and then just before taking your third jump forward towards the floor portal.
iii) This way you should have taken no more than two steps when you emerge out of the corresponding portal. Easy as 1 2 3!

4) Should I Save Regularly When Attempting The Least Time Challenges?

Some will argue that you should avoid saving as it disrupts your flow. I however, would suggest that you should not be averse to doing so especially if you have just passed a particularly difficult section and you are matching or even better besting the time on the video guide. Taking it in stages really is the best way to go for many of these challenges and by saving at certain key points you will be thankful at not having to do that part that had you tearing your hair out all over again. The auto-save function of course will often do your job for you. At certain points in my challenge descriptions I have indicated where I believe it might be a good idea to make a save but take this is as simply a suggestion on my part. Save or don’t save at parts YOU are comfortable with.

5) Should I Persevere With This Or Give In To Frustration And I Put My Foot Through My TV?

Without question carry on! Best piece of advice I can give when one particular challenge is driving you crazy is not to become demoralised. You WILL beat it eventually just keep at it. The feeling of elation more than matches the feeling of despair endured in all the failed attempts.

Mini-Guides

1) Test Chamber 13

A) Least Portals

i) Target: 4 Portals
ii) Difficulty Level: Medium
iii) Tips and Tricks: What makes this challenge particularly tricky is throwing the block on to the second button. I did this numerous often finding that I just missed the button or fell to the floor in the process. I have subsequently discovered that jumping and then pressing the right trigger will throw the block so this could make things a good bit easier. Not entirely sure on the reliability of this method but give it a go as I think once you've learnt the technique it will make completing the challenge significantly more straightforward.

B) Least Steps

i) Target: 10 Steps
ii) Difficulty Level: Medium
iii) Tips and Tricks: Make sure you can drop the block against the wall and not on the button itself. This is made easier if you crouch and you should be able to hit the right spot.

C) Least Time

i) Target: 19 Seconds
ii) Difficulty Level: High
iii) Tips and Tricks: Hardest part is at 0.11 seconds in the video where you have to fire the portal through the door in the brief moment it stays open followed by the second portal as you drop down to the floor. There is an alternative method which involves throwing the block in the same way as the in Least Steps challenge but depending on how good you are at this will determine which way you decide to go.

2) Test Chamber 14

A) Least Portals

i) Target: 2 Portals
ii) Difficulty Level: Very Low
iii) Tips and Tricks: A rather simple and welcome two-portal technique.

B) Least Steps

i) Target: 10 Steps
ii) Difficulty Level: Low
iii) Tips and Tricks: As long as you’re reasonable at firing portals quickly into the floor as you emerge out of the ceiling shouldn’t have too many problems here. Try to land with just one step on the lift and then you should have no problem reaching the exit within the target.

C) Least Time

i) Target: 10 Seconds
ii) Difficulty Level: High
iii) Tips and Tricks: Numerous videos on this one and I’ve simply linked the one I eventually got it with. Took me many attempts and you may prefer one of the alternative options on Youtube. Practice ortientating yourself in the right direction as you emerge from the floor portal. Land well and you should make into the lift in time.

3) Test Chamber 15

A) Least Portals

i) Target: 14 Portals
ii) Difficulty Level: Medium
iii) Tips and Tricks: Using the camera to knock the energy ball into the capture device at 1.04 is a little tricky but not too bad. I actually did it quicker than the guy in the video. Jumping onto the platform to get to the final room at 1.44 is also a little hard and when you get there don’t worry about leaping on to the lift to reach the exit. The guy only did that to show off! I never managed it successfully. Remember by using his method up to this point you will still have four portals to spare to finish off the room. So instead just use them to complete the chamber the normal way by manoeuvring the energy ball into the capture device. I won’t explain how to do this as you should know having played through the game at least once before.
N.B. Just noticed that Youtube prevents the embedding of this video. Here's the original url - LINK

B) Least Steps

i) Target: 55 Steps
ii) Difficulty Level: Medium
iii) Tips and Tricks: Video for this is good because he completes it with eight steps to spare which laves a good bit of leeway for errors. This is most likely to occur at places 1.34 to 1.46 and 2.10 to 3.20. Although you are free to make some mistakes be careful not to take it too easy. You don’t want to find yourself over the step count by the time you reach the exit! Try to practice so that you keep as close as possible to his step count. This way you should have no problems!

C) Least Time

i) Target: 54 Seconds
ii) Difficulty Level: High
iii) Tips and Tricks: Once again this video should be encouraging as the guy makes a couple of errors and still reaches the exit in time (although just barely to be fair!). You may find it quicker to portal as soon as you exit the lift but I don’t think this will make any great difference. Try to make sure you get the energy ball into the catchment area first time. As long as you are at the same area at 0.23 you should be ok. Don’t worry too much about portal placement to get through the acid tunnel area either. He seems to be overly specific about where he puts them. Also fire a portal to the opposite wall at 0.44 instead of into the floor. This should also save you sometime. When you exit this portal it might be a good idea to make a save just so you have time practice orientating yourself in the correct direction at 0.55 to reach the platform with the exit. You may not need to but just an idea if you're having difficulties.

4) Test Chamber 16

A) Least Portals

i) Target: 2 Portals
ii) Difficulty Level: Low
iii) Tips and Tricks: Not much to say on this one really. Follow the video correctly and manoeuvring your way past the turrets to the exit should present no serious problems.

B) Least Steps

i) Target: 40 Steps
ii) Difficulty Level: Medium
iii) Tips and Tricks: Like the steps challenge on Chamber 15 not too tough but it is possible to loose concentration and make mistakes if you’re not careful. It is not imperative to throw the cube across to side like he does at 1.13. Simply get into a position where you can fire a portal into the ceiling above the second turret in the corridor (also making sure it can’t see you) and then use the other portal to take it out with the cube. As with the other steps challenges just make sure you are keeping close as possible to the step count in the video and you should make it to the exit with a few to spare.

C) Least Time

i) Target: 52 Seconds
ii) Difficulty Level: Very High
iii) Tips and Tricks: Probably the most difficult of all the gold medal challenges you will face. Be prepared to try this time and time again before completing it. The video guide I’ve linked for it is definitely the most helpful around as its specific to the 360 version of the game. The best tip I can offer is at rather than using the method at 0.43 to disable the final turret you should instead lean round the corner and simply fire a portal at the camera above. This will then fall and take out the turret for you. If you manage this and are matching or even better beating the time on the video then ‘save’ here. This will give you time to attempt the final portals which will take you to the exit. However, basically everything from the moment the door opens after 20 seconds will, unless you are either very good or very fortunate, be a nightmare of trial and error. Good luck!

5) Test Chamber 17

A) Least Portals

i) Target: 2 Portals
ii) Difficulty Level: Low
iii) Tips and Tricks: Very straightforward. Just follow the video.

B) Least Steps

i) Target: 150 Steps
ii) Difficulty Level: Medium
iii) Tips and Tricks: Sorry as I was unable to find a video which shows how to do this challenge perfectly. Instead use the video I have linked as a template and take note of what I say to do differently. First try to make sure that at 0.22, when his step count is 35, yours is something less, ideally 30 or 31 at the most. This is perfectly do-able. You just have to watch your 'step!' Also pay attention to the fact that his step count changes from 189 to 186 at 1.37. Therefore you do not want to enter the room at any more than 186 steps. Diverting the energy balls into their respective a catchment devices isn’t the easiest task so you also want to make sure you are standing in the right place to divert them. The third one is by far the hardest. Look on the video to see how he is angling the companion cube and keep it in this place until it activates the final lift. Try not to get frustrated and overcompensate with too many major adjustments of the angle of the companion cube or you will be there forever.

C) Least Time

i) Target: 127 Seconds
ii) Difficulty Level: Medium
iii) Tips and Tricks: Not as tough as some of the other time challenges. A good thing to do is that instead of utilising the companion cube to adjust the camera simply catch it in mid-air when using a portal to shoot it off the wall. Laying it down in the right place can be a touch tricky. Just try to make sure there is enough room for the companion cube to balance on it. Aside from this everything else is relatively straightforward.

6) Test Chamber 18

A) Least Portals

i) Target: 16 Portals
ii) Difficulty Level: Low
iii) Tips and Tricks: See Test Chamber 17 Least Portals

B) Least Steps

i) Target: 85 Steps
ii) Difficulty Level: Medium
iii) Tips and Tricks: Only trick part is getting in and out of the room with the turrets. This video shows it being done with five steps to spare so if you are one or two off when you place the cube on the button you should be ok.

C) Least Time

i) Target: 113 Seconds
ii) Difficulty Level: Very High
iii) Tips and Tricks: Tough right from the get-go this one. You will need to practice the technique he uses at 0.10 a good few times before you can get on to the higher platform. From here it’s a case of trying to go as quickly as possible. The room with the turrets is also very hard and its worth saving once you drop down to the lower level with the cube. If you are matching or even better besting the time on the video when you place the cube on the button then you are doing very well. Its also worth while saving at 0.47 in the video. This will give you time to practice entering the final section. Finally make sure you are facing down into the portal at 1.12. This way you will find yourself almost directly at the exit after you emerge from the other portal hopefully with a second or so to spare.

Finally I will say that this is the first time I have ever written a guide of this nature so I have no idea whether people will find it at all helpful. In fact it might be complete rubbish but hopefully not! If anyone sees ways it could be improved please let me know and I shall endeavour to make positive amendments.

Aside from this if anyone has any further specific questions please let me know I will do my best to assist. Good luck!

In Chamber 13 Least Time, how do you get the distance on that jump from button column to button column? I have never been able to go that far. If I were, the gold would be far easier.

Fantastic guide mate. Love that you've linked a video for each challenge and also given an overview of the difficulty and what to expect from each challenge. I much appreciate the time you've spent putting this together. I've got the last 2 chambers to finish in gold now so fingers crossed I should behave this done soon.

Chamber 16 is impossible to get gold on time trial/least steps. I have tried using invincibility and also portals anywhere. But its not helping the stupid turrets make it impossible.Making me want to break my game in half! Doen 16 out of 18 with gold. Just them two and i am done and will be happy. But no. Fuck sake :( Videos aren't really helping on them two as they rub it in how they can do it, with me sitting here doing hte same and getting shot to crap. But i will say thank you for the help on the others. >:(

Thanks for all the videos, even though most of them are useless and won't really help anyone at all for the 360 version of Portal seeing as the videos are from the PC version of the game, and most of the tricks you can do in the PC version aren't possible in the 360 version. Unless you've found a way to use a keyboard and mouse for the 360. Precision is needed to do a lot of those tricks, and that's one things that 2 joysticks aren't helpful for at all.

No problem. But actuallly the majority of the time videos (where using trick becomes the most imporant) are from the 360 version.

@ ricky horror: they are not useless.. in fact it is helpful to have them ready to watch.. i remember searching by myself for this links.. The only trick i can remember is the accelerated back/ forth hopping, which isn't working on xbox!
Anyway i got my Scientist Medal a long time ago without this nice sorted helpful guide and without keyboard and mouse, it is not impossible!

One of the most detailed and well organized solutions I've ever read. I had achieved this approximately two years ago with video footage detailing my endeavor. I came here to post my first ever solution; however, it is clearly unnecessary. Great work to the author, and good luck to those of you trying to complete this daunting achievement.

@CabbageWithPie - It is doable, even without cheats. I used this guide and I was able to clear Chamber 16 Least Time. Granted, it took me about 3 hours of making slow progress, but it can be done. In the end, like the author said, some of it will come down to luck. Will the WSC drop onto the turret, will the turret fall through the portal and take out the other turret? I had to wait until I had a perfect run, and when I finally got it, I beat it by 1 second (and should have probably beat it by 2 or 3).

@elNorte - I'm down to 3 challenges left, but I wanted to offer some advice on Chamber 17 Least Steps. I was able to save some steps by staying on the upper level of the main room and arranging my portal to have the Energy Pellet strike the extended panel as seen in this video. It takes a lot of time and patience - I think my total run time for it was 16 or so minutes, but the steps I saved by not jumping down into the lower level were crucial. I also saved a few steps by using portals on the floor with the button.

DONE! Thank you so much for this guide, elNorte.
Things I did differently that helped me:

Chamber 18 Least Steps: Instead of getting the cube, I instead took the camera from the turret room and portaled immediately back to the wall with the door, leaned it against the door, and then flung back to the button to trap the camera in the door, similar this video at 1:25, except that I didn't mess up the bit portaling back to the wall with the door like this player did at 0:42 ( should have used the orange portal). It helped me immensely, and I finished the chamber with 66 steps.

Chamber 18 Least Time: I used the technique at 0:01 in this video to get around the more difficult technique the guide's video does at 0:10. I didn't manage to do any of the quick flinging the player does right after, and I was still able to get into the room with the turrets at about 0:18 this way. Might be something players having trouble with the 0:10 technique might try if it is frustrating them.

Again, thanks so much for your help! Couldn't have done it without you!

"Chamber 16 is impossible to get gold on time trial/least steps."

To get the Least Time gold medal on Chamber 16 you have to glitch your way out of the first room before Glados is done talking. This shaves 20 seconds off your time. I don't even know if it's possible to get that gold medal on this level without exploiting the glitch. Even with the glitch and going through the level perfectly I finished the chamber with only a second or two to spare.

I'm just after getting the three achievements thanks to this guide. It is possible to do without glitching, you just need the patience to complete it. Chamber 17 was a pain in the arse lining the energy balls up with the companion cube but it is doable. Thanks for the guide and appreciate the help.

I just wanted to say thank you for this helpful guide. It got me farther than I have gotten on the advanced challenges. I gave up on them awhile back but I got determined to try again which I am glad that I did it got me the bronze and silver medal achievements tonight offline. I did these legitimately I tried cheats before but they didn't help me at all not even get bronze. I just took my time and watched the videos carefully. The only one I want to try the glitch (portal bumping) on is chamber 16 time trial 52 seconds. This is the only one I need for gold to unlock the monstrous Aperture Science. I try and try and try again to skip the 20 seconds of GLaDOS talking but the bump won't active for me? I don't know what I am doing wrong? If I can have help with the portal bump I should have plenty of time to get gold! I tried with waiting for the door to open but I never get gold always bronze or silver.

This is an outstanding guide, it's great to see people put in so much time and effort for the benefit of others. And although for most challenges I went to Youtube and watched multiple videos to figure out the best strategy for the challenges, oddly enough your short pep talk about not giving up is what led me to earn this achievement. Thanks again

Excellent guide, good tips, not always the best videos though. These videos are usually barely gold, and between these and the insane record runs on youtube there are often better runs that combine the two. I found that combining a few techniques helped especially on level 17 and 18 time trial

Hi

It's been so long since I last visited the TA website simply as a consequence of not having played my Xbox 360 properly for such an extended period of time.

It's very heartening to read back through so much positive feedback over years. The 18 negative votes is rather disappointing and I would love to know why people felt this way but seeing how many others the guide appears to have helped win the achievement makes up for it.

I noticed that the original video I linked for Test Chamber 17 Least Portals has since been removed so I found another one which is good enough as despite the one mistake the original uploader makes it isn't one of the harder challenges.

Interesting to see how difficult many are stilling finding Test Chamber 16 Least Time. It took me a moment to remember just how tough it is so I certainly sympathise but I can still assure everyone that it is possible with the right amount of perseverance.

Sorry I've not responded to specific questions but my long hiatus from the site has unfortunately prevented me from doing so. I know it's been a long time now but I shall read back through some of the comments and see whether or not I might be able to help with some of the obstacles people have encountered. Alternatively please feel free to send me a private message for any particular queries you may have.

Just completed them all today and for me my tips are the following .

Least Portals challenges is easiest by far: You don't have to worry about steps taken time so you can casually pace yourself, watch a few guides and its a breeze.

Least steps is in the middle: portal and time is irrelevant but learn to use portals to save steps. Don't worry too much about getting 2 steps at the beginning. Every challenge I completed I had started with 3 steps. You don't have much margin for error but you DO have some margin.

I watched videos and saved my game often to match the videos, if you screw up, load and continue, repeat.

Time is the hardest: sort of. Some of the time ones aren't too difficult but some require you learn the portal bump trick to really save on time. If you dont want to use this method then good luck with Portal Chamber 16 and 17! Watch videos of people doing 16 without portal bumping and see it takes HOURS of practice.

Or.....portal bump the start of 16 like i did Saved me 12 seconds at the first door, couldnt portal bump the second time like videos I saw so raced from that point on and had seconds to spare. Portal bumping on 17 makes it a breeze otherwise is a challenge. I saved when it was possible and wouldn't impede the flow of the level.

Just chip away at it do a few a day and you will get there. All the best

A great example of an inconsiderate port in that the challenges were clearly created for mouse and keyboard. I just tried playing the Steam version and there's a world of difference. The mouse is so much faster and accurate. I think it's pretty telling that Valve nerfed this achievement into "Go for the Gold" in Portal: Still Alive which requires getting only 1 gold medal on any map.

This might be a hot take, but I find the Least Time easier than the Least Steps challenges. I’m 4/6 on Least Time golds in two sittings, and 0/6 on Steps in as many.

EDIT: Once I figured out the portal drop-in trick and could do it consistently, the Least Steps all came in about an hour.

I recommend save scumming as much as possible. If watching a video, pause everytime you have steps/time equal or less than the ones in the guide. Use two different saves and load whenever you feel you did a bad run on a specific section.
Made it easier for me as i didn't need to redo the whole course everytime i did a little mistake. And the cubes and energy balls codes are a godsend. Save before inputing the combination so you can reload if you lose too much time getting the code right. Just dont forget to save, start new game and load before the elevator.

Maybe I'm just better at games now than I was 15 years ago, but I really didn't find these to be that bad. The save scumming helped a lot. I didn't even use cheats either.

Y, A, B, A, B, Y, Y, A, Left +D, Right +D= Portals can spawn anywhere.
This cheat is activated off the pause screen. Once you get to the exit SAVE, then make a new game. Once that is done, go and reload the saved game, then go into the exit door. Do this 18/18 for gold and wall-la!

Proper thanks for this video goes to maltchievy on YouTube.com

^^,
If you've done it without, attaining the gold ranks with cheats is a horrible, unfortunate joke. It completely undermines the effort required to do it "legit" when people get these achievements like this. Sorries. :S

You're very right, this s*** is hard as hard as f***. If they didn't want cheats used, they shouldnt have put them in the game.

I am upset the PC version youtube videos clearly take advantage of the phyics engine (using mouse to "throw" stuff farther than flicking the xbox controller sticks can respond), and have been putting this achievement off for so long.

I really got to start taking advantage of the tools the developers put in these games...

I am going to first TRY this again someday, but I also might start thinking about RESORTING as well...

Leo, that argument would be perfectly fine by me if their intentions had actually been to allow cheats while also unlocking achievements (consider GHIII's cheat for buying everything from the shop). But that is not the case in Portal. In order to get them to unlock anyway you have to use a round-about exploit that made it past Valve's QA. The reason it hasn't been patched is the same as why Valve hasn't fixed most of the issues in TF2 or any of the other games - Valve is lazy, doesn't care, or simply hasn't gotten around to it. Whichever the case may be, it does not detract from illegitimacy and slothfulness of using the cheats in this way.

Also, again I stress the difficulties of doing this with with/without cheats simply do not compare. Doing the achievement exploiting the cheats is ridiculously and disgustingly easy.

To be fair, I tried these achievements without the cheat and found them to be completely and utterly impossible. Then I tried them with the cheat and still found them to be completely and utterly impossible. So saying that the cheat makes these achievements "ridiculously and disgustingly easy" is a bit of an exaggeration, IMO.

I PLAYED ABOUT 14 OF THESE CHALLENGES WITHOUT USING CHEATS IT TOOK ME LIKE 3 DAYS TO GET THEM DONE. I FIGURED OUT THIS PROCESS WITHOUT USING ANY GUIDES. I USED THE CHEATS ON THE LAST 4 ON THE TIME TRIALS. THERE ARE SOME THAT ARE REDICULOUSLY HARD EVEN WITH THE CHEATS ON. I SAY IF THE CHEATS HELP USE THEM.

Previously had a ridiculous rant about cheats as a comment here (I probably shouldn't have deleted it, it still had some points I liked), but I didn't realize this was patched to be harder than a couple years ago when I did it. Good luck anyone who tries this now, it was stupid hard back then (just took some dedication), so I can't imagine how crazy it must be now.

im always sure to downvote solutions like these, usually because of the pussy-ass behavior comments from sideburns above. I did this when I was 14 without cheats, with alot of practice., and then I see you complaining about least amount of portals on chamber 14 which took me like 5 minutes, you probably didnt even watch the videos of how to do the testchambers, you just cheated and ran like the bitch you are.

it is like a walk down memory lane reading this guide. i got this achievement legit when the game first came out - and i put some crazy time into the game to get it. so no one can say that this achievement is impossible. in fact i feel so proud to have it, and to have gotten it legit. (it is my highest TA Ratio achievement)

that being said... had i known about this cheat back when the game first came out, would i have used it? HECK YES!

positive voted.

I like when you get the "adults" who post about how they did these achievements when they had no life, er... I mean "were kids / teens" and then somehow think that those of us who use roundabout ways to get achievements are bitches. I mean I guess when mommy and daddy aren't buying you games and all you've got is the one game to play hour after hour I'd be pissy too if someone who had money and / or a life got it easier than you did. I also like how half the idiots who comment about how they did this "X amount of time ago" don't realize that it's gotten even harder in several cases. Because they're idiots. Upvoted.

This game pisses me off. You have to be EXACT to the pixel on where you place your portal and step, or else you're not gonna get gold. The videos people have posted are too quick to get an exact look on where you need to place portals. AND you're right about the PC having a way better shot at getting gold than the 360.

Thumbs Up!

Don't understand why people are complaining a cheating when they cheated by looking up a guide on how to do it. Sure it's not the same as entering a code, but it is still cheating. All you're doing is watching someone else do something, and trying to copy their moves. I remember in school, if I copied somebodys answer, I was cheating. Positive vote.

MxOxRxRxIxS you took the words right out of my mouth. Looking at a guide would be considered cheating, so anyone who's looking and commenting are cheating. I'm going to try these tonight, without the cheat, but reading how difficult they are, I dunno if I'll be able to do it cheat free lol. We shall see...

So I have heard about people using cheats before. My question is how does that help you in the time challenges? For example, 10 seconds in the map is not enough time to enter the code, shoot a portal and load your game later.

Thanks for the cheat codes Sideburns. Question though, after about 3-5 challenges of using a cheat, it always glitches on me and basically resets the counter to 1/18 on all 3 achievements and Advanced isn't an option.

All I can do is the original chambers and once I beat Glados, it opens up and my 1 counted challenge is my most recent one completed. Thoughts?

Thought about clearing my cache and working on them "offline" to see if that helps and if it does, saving the easiest for last and re-downloading the updates once I'm at 17/18. If that would help of course.

Thanks.

Well, I unlocked it. What I did was on the levels I did use a cheat (not all, roughly half), I would save, then quit to the title screen. I would then start a new game on a separate level and then load my saved game. Never once had an issue. Quitting may take an extra minute or so, but it was worth it to me. +1 from me BTW.

@ people like Elestian's point of view:
"Nothing is more lame than exploiting cheats for achievements."

I say shut up to those people. Not everyone can have the dexterity in their hands for these required times, etc for golds. And especially to you Elestian, big talk from someone who's boosted quite alot yourself, even boosted The Orange Box.

Thanks again for the codes Sideburns.

If you want to get the achievement to have a datestamp and have chosen to do it offline without the update, there's an easy way of getting it. Right before the exit of the last chamber, save, quit to dashboard, reconnect to XBL, download the update, load that save (or do the new game to clear out cheats, not sure if that's necessary), reload, run through the exit.

Provided you got the requirement for gold on the last map, you'll pop all 3 achievements with the date stamp.

Got it today legit, though to be fair last night I was contemplatin cheatin for Chamber 18 least time. A friend who glitched it linked me to this guide. I think I would have kept practicin until I got it, but thumbs up anyway. Seem to have quite a hornet's nest goin on. Isn't the point of a guide to help people with achievements they're stuck on? I'm grateful to anyone that puts their neck out to do that.

All im going to say about this is that its understandably hard not to cheat for someone who wants 100 per cent but its lame for people who spent a long amount of time trying for this and finally achieved it (Like me) but yes, theres nothing anyone can do now so i guess it doesnt matter :|

Yes this still works. I used codes to get this achievement last night on my Series X.

Some other useful codes:
Spawn Energy Ball: D-Up, Y, Y, X, X, A, A, B, B, D-Up
Spawn Box: D-Down, B, A, B, Y, D-Down, B, A, B, Y
God Mode: LB, D-Up, RB, D-Up, LB, LB, D-Up, RB, RB, D-Up
Portal Placement: Y, A, B, A, B, Y, Y, A, D-Left, D-Right

You can save, enter the code then revert to the save and it will still be active.

You can also change your crouch/jump binds from the face buttons so you don't jump or crouch when entering codes.

You might want to consider upping your sensitivity for time trials.

Save again at the very end and start a new game. Once loaded, then load your save and it'll think you did it without cheats.

For time trials/steps I had to do frequent saves with perfect movement. Updating the save every time I did a section perfectly.

For steps learning how to drop from the ceiling without taking a step is important. Check out some of the other steps video guides on how to do that. The most optimal start for steps is to take 2 then jump into the first portal.

The Aperture Science achievement is by far the hardest achievement to unlock in the Orange Box. For me personally it was by far the most difficult and frustrating achievement in any Xbox 360 game I've ever played. It certainly doesn't help that the Xbox controller was not kept in mind when the challenges were designed.

I've seen many people say they've given up trying to get 100% on this game because of this achievement. I'm writing this guide to help people who are more interested in getting this achievement and moving on, as opposed to getting it "legit." Please note that even while employing these methods this achievement will still be incredibly difficult and will likely take you many frustrating days to get but it should lower your frustration somewhat.

Note these cheats for Portal as they will be important:

Create Box - Down, B, A, B, Y, Down, B, A, B, Y
Fire Energy Ball - Up, Y, Y, X, X, A, A, B, B, Up
Fire Rocket - Up, Y, Y, B, B, A, A, X, X, Up
Place Portals Anywhere - Y, A, B, A, B, Y, Y, A, Left, Right

NOTE: If you use cheats you MUST save your game right before you complete the level, then start a new game and reload your save. This disables any cheats you used. Otherwise the game labels you a cheater and you won't get a medal.

To get the achievement you must get gold medals on three challenges (least portals, least steps, and least time) for each of the six chambers for a total of 18 medals. The first challenge you should attempt is Least Portals because the gold medals are by far the easiest to obtain (even without cheating), you can take your time, and it helps you get a good layout of each level.

The second challenge will be Least Steps. This one is considerably more difficult but not as nerve-wracking as Least Time because you can still go as slow as you need to. However every little move you make will count as a step and they will quickly add up.

The third challenge is Least Time which is where most vast majority of frustration comes from. This is where the cheats come in handy. Some have said that the cheats are useless for the Least Time challenges but what they likely didn't know is that the cheats can be entered while the game is paused! If you press start and highlight or select certain menu options you should be able to enter each cheat with the game paused. Where you need to be in the menu will be different for each code because of the different button combinations but the goal is to enter the code without going back into the game while you are doing it -- you can experiment to find the best method.

The Fire Energy Ball code was especially useful in Chamber 15. I could simply aim the reticle at where I wanted the energy ball to go, pause the game and enter the code, unpause the game and the energy ball goes right where I want it. No wasting time getting the portal sequence right.

As for glitches go, this is by far the easiest way to complete Least Time on Chamber 16:

Portal Chamber 16 Least Time Gold 41 Seconds - YouTube

The idea is to use portal bumping to get out of the first room while GLaDOS is still talking. If you are quick enough you should be able to shave 15 - 20 seconds off your time.

This takes some practice to pull off but it makes the chamber infinitely easier. I'm pretty sure these glitches don't work if you are using the Portals Anywhere cheat.

Unfortunately the cheats don't help in some of the toughest challenges, like Least Time challenge in Chamber 13, but they should give you an advantage in about 1/3 to 1/2 off the challenges.

This is not a guide on completing the Challenges.
This is information and tips if your Portal challenges glitch on you.

*Note! don't worry about this unless you have encountered this problem, it seems very rare

Brief description of the problem

While i was playing portal something strange happened to the game and i lost the option to play any of the portal challenges. (i had already unlocked them and started playing them)
The save files were not corrupted and i could not find any reason why this occurred.
The same thing happened to me 4 times before i managed to get all Testchambers done (yes i had to re-do almost all challenges 5 times) they reset at different times but all the times they reset i had at least done 50% or more of the challenges (once i even had 1 challenge left to do)

I looked around the internet to find a solution to this problem but couldn't find any.
to add to that it seems like this problem is very rare, i have only read/seen one other person experiencing a similar problem

Edit: i just found this: http://www.xboxachievements.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19090...
not really about the challenges but it is about a similar problem,

If you have any information or personal experience on this glitch please write in the comments everything you know about it (how it happened, how much you have played, the circumstances when the challenges reset, offline or online etc)

Tips on how get all challenges if you encounter this glitch

When you first encounter this there won't be much to do about it, transferring saves or having a backup save doesn't work (i have tried both)

So you have to do it the hard way.
in order to get the challenges back you will have to replay and finish the last mission (Test chamber 19)

When you finish that mission you should have re-unlocked the challenges but all your earlier progress won't be there so you have to do everything all over again.

to make it easier for you in case they reset again after the first reset save right on the end of every mission that you find hard/time consuming to complete, Don't save on the easy ones, you only have 7 manual save slots so use them for hard challenges (there are a total of 18 challenges)
Don't bother on trying to get all these legit since you should already have had it if they wouldn't have reset.
So i recommend using the "place portals anywhere"
cheat: Y, A, B, A, B, Y, Y, A, Left D-pad, Right D-pad
*Note! you need to save right before you finish the level and exit the game and then reload the save you just made in order for it to work.
i used cheats on test chamber 17 & 18.

Other than that there is not much more that i can help you with, use the other guides to complete the challenges.

All information on this glitch is highly appreciated! question or suggestions are also appreciated!

Good luck!
