How to unlock the Little Rocket Man achievement in The Orange Box - Definitive Guide

This is, in my opinion, the most fun achievement in the game. The gnome is discovered in the communications shack that you and Alyx enter at the very beginning of the game, just look on the ground and under everything on the floor, you will easily spot it. You must take this little gnome through the entire game with you, all the way to the White Forest rocket Silo (pre-fighting.) Once you reach the Silo, watch the talking, and wait for the part where Lamarr jumps into a little hatch in the rocket. You must place the gnome in this same opening. YOU MUST CLOSE THE HATCH'S DOOR . No closed door = no achievement. As soon as you close the door, the achievement will unlock.

Once you know that, it is pretty strait forward. Don't lose the little guy, make sure that he is safe at all times.

When you and the vortigaunt go to get the Extract, you can leave him sitting by Alyx, as to not have to carry him around with you through the Antlion Den. I have tested this, and can assure you that he will not disappear.

To get him through the driving scenes, you must shove him into the back window of your car. Set him in position, then gravity gun him about 20 times to get him really stuck. I assure you, he will still fall out, so be sure to check constantly for the little guy in the back of the car.

During fighting scenes, be sure that he is in an out of the way location. If he is in the middle of the encounter, he can be sent flying, making it very hard to find him.

What i did instead of trying to stuff him in the car was gravity gun shoot him way ahead of me then drive until i got to him, got out shot him farther, etc., rinse and repeat. It worked wonders and I never had to check if he fell out and i never had to drive slow to make sure he wouldnt fall out.

I found getting him through the garage after, IIRC, going through the toxic mess a bit difficult. This video on YouTube might help you (I just tried over and over again going as fast as I could): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkIrAC25b-0.

I stuck him in the back window too, was frustrating to keep stopping to check on him but its the best position in the car

Man, I didn't know he was at the beginning of the game! I've played chapters 1 and 2 three times each just for the Get Some Grub achievement! *Sigh* Oh well, I'll do it later...

I got out and shot the gnome with the grav gun. Only really hard part of this achievement was when the helicopter is chasing you.

I actually placed him in between me and Alyx during the driving scenes, made it alot easier to see, and if I saw him sliding one way I could just turn the car the other way and slide him back over. Was the best way I found to do it.

Also there is a spot where you can shoot him onto a bridge you will be going to later...forgot where as I haven't played it in months. But that made that part of the game alot easier.

I agree with Radiant that the hardest part was with the chopper, but you could always use the invincibility cheat. I didn't need to, but it might make things easier.

I'd have to say it was alittle annoying to do this achievement, but I do agree that it was a fun one.

Even though this is fun, its the hardest. I dont have it yet but I was working on it once and got to the helicopter scene (pre-fighting- i guess because your not fighting your running away). Im actually have really hard time with it because the gnome keeps falling out ever time I ram something. It wont even be a hard ram either. And when Im trying to put it back in the car the f***ing heli shoots it out of my hands and goes flying somewhere at ground level. Really aggravating

One thing to note, when you have to leave the car in order to take down the chopper, don't leave the gnome with the car or on the ground near the car. The car will be teleported to a new location so that they can install the radio on it. I was able to stack some boxes and climb up them and grav gun the gnome back over the fence after I killed the chopper, but it wasn't easy. You cannot return to that area once you "drop in" to the chopper fight. The chopper crashes in the same area you left the car...so if you did leave him on accident, he'll be near the crash site.

You can, however, leave him in the garage while you go and take down the mounted gun. He'll be there when you come back and then you can throw him in the car and continue.

When you have the two turrets, make sure you put him in the corner behind Alyx. I put him infront of Alyx and when the fighting was over, he had disappeared! I assume that he had fallen down the elevator shaft.

I accidentally left him in the alyx healing room, and was pleased to see that I returned there later and was able to pick him up again. :)

I now have the achievement, I will miss you Bob, enjoy your trip to space!

Yeah, I didn't shut the door, but luckily I saved just before placing him in. It wasn't fun trying to drive him around, but otherwise it was kinda neat. Certainly MUCH MUCH harder that his achievement in L4D2, haha.

"Fun" is the exact opposite of doing this achievement. It's annoying as hell and a PITA to boot. Same with that One Bullet in Episode 1.

@ Rhyolitic While I agree that "One Free Bullet" was lame, I found this one to be very fun. Oh, and I'm assuming you followed an achievement guide while playing through, so you only had to do it once? That would definitely make it lame. Try playing through without it first. The second time around makes it very interesting.

I can confirm that you can also leave the gnome with Alyx at the part when your car needs to be fixed and you have to destory the autogun. Although it's best to leave it at the door where Alyx is stood because if you leave it on the white table it wont be there when you get back.

Just my luck; this achievement didn't unlock.
Put that stupid gnome in the hatch a good 5 times on different saves, nothing.

using the invinsible cheat does not effect the achievement.
whenever you see Alex on foot out of the car that means you can leave the car and it will spawn on the other side of the next tunnel.
after you have fixed the car and once out of the following tunnel you can leave the car, go past the point where you are trapped in the house, remove the shields and then go to the ramp jump and go down and put the gnome somewhere safe. alex will not follow you past the jump, then back track all the way to the tunnel and drive the car to the ramp picking up alex on the way back. after that put the gnome in the car and drive through the tunnel together for the last part with the race with dog. it takes longer but I preferred it to the start-stop-launch gnome-start stop method.
this way you also always know where the gnome is and you are not firing it blindly into the distance as often.
all in all it took me about 3 hours.

Minor tip, if you want to quickly see if he's still inside the car while driving, hit cn_A for the handbrake.
It's enough pressure to only press slightly.

Small tip, you can jump from infront of the vehicle and put the gnome on back of it. It will be on the backseat floating. It is easier to carry that way than putting it from driver seat.

A 2023 retrospective: having unlocked this waaaay back in 2009, I agree with you still. This is one of the most enjoyable achievements I've ever unlocked. Props Valve when they still made games.

This was the most challenging achievement i have had to do, but also the most fun. I extremely suggest anyone with this game to try.

The beginning is pretty easy, just bring him with you, and make sure he's not forgotten. When you get to the vort chamber, just place him in a corner (not right up against the elevator, he can fall in and you'll never get him back) and when you get back, same thing.

Before big battles, find a safe place where he won't be touched and pick him up afterward. In the area where you have to get to the car, before you go in the first room, shoot the gnome over the wall you're trying to get around. Don't worry, he'll still be there.

When you're driving, put him at your or Alyx's feet, that way you can see him if he falls out and quickly get him back and continue. Just make sure not to drive fast. When you go into the house with the big floating green worm-thing (i forgot what it was called), make sure you don't place gnome in the car, cause the car gets teleported and you'll be wasting time searching for him on the ground.

When you get to the part with the hunter-chopper following you, place the gnome at the beginning of the train yard. Continue until you get the first load, then go back and you can safely bring the gnome forward with no chopper. Once you get back past the load, I kept shooting him forward, going to where he went, picking him up, and repeating. Once you kill the chopper, it's pretty easy, just keep him with you.

Just have fun and name the gnome if you want.

His name is actually "Gnome Chompski" as shown in the Left 4 Dead 2 achievement "GUARDIN' GNOME"

Left 4 Dead 2GUARDIN' GNOMEThe GUARDIN' GNOME achievement in Left 4 Dead 2 worth 48 pointsRescue Gnome Chompski from the Carnival.

Anyways, nice guide. Just a note though, there is a bridge you can shoot him on to save alot of trouble to. Look at the video solution between 5:00 and 5:20 and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I love my Sleepyhead. It's very comforting...picking him up after hearing ridiculous poison headcrab screams, and seeing his innocent little gnome smile again! D'aaaawes.

In response to Quarantane, at the end of the third paragraph of the solution, i talk about that exact shortcut, but shooting it over the wall instead of on the bridge. It is basically the same concept. (sorry i took so long to answer. i didn;t realize i had a message in my inbox until today. XD )

Someone recently reported this solution for unnecessary spoilers. Although I believe that this entire solution is a spoiler and that you should not attempt it until you've finished episode 2 at least once, I removed a part of the last sentence, which I believe was the "unnecessary spoiler". If anyone has any problems in the future, I would appreciate it if they posted a comment before reporting this solution. Thanks.

I hated this achievement! It was fun, except the little guy just kept falling out of my car using the method mentioned above. So if you are having the same problem, I recommend just carrying the gnome by foot, and your car will reload close to you at every check point, so no worries.

Also, the following code makes you invincible, but does not disable the achievement (for some extra help)... and note that up refers to the D pad...

LB, up, RB, up, LB, LB, up, RB, RB, up

Try to do it moderately quickly (roughly 2 button presses a second), as it will sometime not work if you do it too fast or slow

***note that this does not be redone every time you start a new level (from save or natural progression), and only needs to be done once per level(I.E. if you do it a second time, it disables the cheat with the second attempt, assuming you typed it correctly)***

##This will work with all the Half Life games on the Orange Box##

>>>Thanks to i r Benga and Toshiro09 for the help<<<

I loved this game and this achievement was part of the reason why, fair warning save often.

It’s pretty straight forward bring him along until you reach the rocket, shove him in and close the door, I also closed the door on that pesky little pet headcrab hehe.

Driving him around is the hardest part, all I can say is keep him at Alex’s feet, that way you can see when he falls out. No amount of nudging or jamming worked for me. I managed to get him stuck on top of the dash once but it didn’t last long and I couldn’t do it again.

FYI be mindful where you leave him, one time I lost him when I set him on the garage table and came back to a garage with no table... RELOAD. Other than that it wasn’t that hard, he actually made a handy weapon at times, just be careful where you shoot him.

In Episode Two, find the Gnome in the communications shack in the begining of the game. He is hidden under a shelf. Keep the gnome with you until you get to the White Forrest Base and place it in the rocket with Lamarr. You must close the door after you place the Gnome inside the Rocket with Lamarr. The achievement will unlock once the door is closed.
