How to unlock the Elemental Maelstrom achievement in The Outer Worlds - Definitive Guide

The easiest way by far is to use the Prismatic Hammer science weapon, with a science skill of at least 80 (thanks to everyone who provided additional feedback on this). Your basic attacks cycle through different types of elemental damage, while sweep attacks apply multiple types at once. The weapon description says the number of damage types the weapon can cycle through is determined by your science skill (mine was 80 when I got the achievement).

The Prismatic Hammer can be found on Groundbreaker really early in the game. Here's a video with the location:

Once you have the hammer just swing away at a mega or named enemy.

All credits for the video goes to RPG Division on youtube.

Doesn't pop at 70, either. Got it at 80.

Science must be at 80. 20 points for every elemental type.

Worked perfectly. I saved my game, respeced my character so that the Science skill was 100 (just to be safe), and fast traveled to the crossroads near the outskirts of Fallbrook. Found a Mantiqueen and swung like crazy at it while in TTD with the Prishammer. Achievement popped quickly. Reloaded my previous save and continued as normal.

Even easier. Do exactly like you said but head to the medical bay on Groundbreaker. Set the difficulty to hard and equip the Prismatic hammer. Smack away at the medical robot. I was level 30 respecced into science and melee and still got it first try.

I like this medical robot idea, but i don't see a robot there. Which room is it in?

(edit - found it, was there on another save. However, he always dies in 4 hits of the prismatic even on hard, debuffed myself to 2H 6 - better luck with the Mega Sprat beneath the Edgewater landing pad.)

I don't know what I'm doing wrong here. I've swung away at a load of mantiqueens and I see all the colours appearing but I don't seem to be getting anything here... Oh and I'm 95 science

I respecced my science to 80 and 2 handed weapons to 50, and took my frustrations out on the first enemy I saw using the Prismatic Hammer, nabbing the achievement on my first try.

I changed from Hard mode to Story in the Monarch Wildernessw when I found a Mega Canid. Using the Prismatic Hammer was so powerful that the Canid was flying in the air on Story Mode, so try to hit that piñata in the air, lol. I had my Science Skill at 80z. U just have to reload a previous save to Hard or whatever u were playing at. Pop!

As you progress through the game's story, you will begin unlocking elemental weapons automatically, or will gain modifications to change the properties of weapons you already have. By the time you are finished on planet Monarch, you should have all 5 weapon damage types, or will unlock them shortly after.

The types are as follows;
- Kinetic (Normal)
- Shock
- Plasma
- Corrosion
- N-Rays

Once you have all 5, equip 4 of them into your active slots, and find an enemy, hitting them with all 4 weapons. Go to your inventory and swap out the last type, hitting them again and killing them to gain this.

I wonder if equipping your companion with the 5th elemental weapon, if that'd work?

@DarqStalker It didn't work for me, so I switched out to the same weapon they were using. I would also recommend telling your companion/s to go stand in a corner while you do it, as they almost killed the enemy before I got the final hit in. Finally, I would recommend one of the larger enemy types.

You can get all weapon damage type before leaving the first planet. I was able to find everythong but the n ray type off off regular looting. I was able to buy one from automated vendor near the ship landing pad for 8k. You can find some of the other damge type in the other vendors you run across near there. if you were unkucky to run across them. I did this after the last quest pertaining to the geothermal plant.

Melbufrauma, i used 4 of the starting pistols for kinetic, corrosive, plasma and electricity. Then i modded a melee weapon with n rays. Then while walking backwards i cycled the the weapons while firing, then switched to my melee for the final. I did this on the first planet on a primal brute i think they were called. Big purple guys that throw rocks. You can find a few near the spaceship wreckage where the Unreliable was parked.

Actually, you can use your companions for this. I got this accidently with Nyoka using an N ray melee, Parvati had a corrosive shotgun, using Nyokas plasma ability and Parvatis shock ability along with my standard damage weapon.

Yup, can confirm companion damage types count, you just have to land the killing blow. I picked this up entirely by accident while fighting a mega sprat...

Another confirmation that companions count. I did this naturally with Felix and Nyoka as companions.

I was busy finishing off the Tartarus section against that big mech, and for some reason, I managed to pop this as I died while killing it. I had all of the damage types, but only used shock and N Ray damage against it.

As an alternative, you can use the science weapon, "Prismatic Hammer" and a fairly high science level. I had science 80 when I did it. You might be able to do it lower, I didn't check.

When you swing the hammer, it cycles through the various elements randomly. Higher science allows it to cycle through more elements. Equip it then go find some primal brutes. Monarch will work, but I did it on Scylla. Put your followers on passive so they don't attack. Now, go find a brute and keep swinging until the achievement unlocks. Might need to heal yourself a few times.

- If you get the Prismatic Hammer shown in the spoiler below it will cycle through different damage types, the amount depends on your Science Skill which must be at least 80 to go through all 5!

- When you see a big enemy just pull out the hammer and start swingin!
- You can also give your companions elemental weapons to help cover your bases

In this video guide I will show you how to hit an enemy with all 5 damage types. Now the types are: Normal, Plasma, Shock, Corrosive, and N-Rays. There will also be a color associated with them as well. Normal is white, Plasma is red, Shock is blue, Corrosive is green, and N-Rays are pink.

The best way to go about this without killing the monster, is by finding weak weapons and modding them. Make sure you save some or go buy some from vendors. Next you will need to modify each one so you have all 5 types. Now what you can do to make this easier is give your partners one each. Also for your partners, go into the behavior page and set the distance to far, the weapon to ranged, and mode to aggressive. This way they will shoot on site and not melee.

The area I tried this as in on Monarch right next to the Casscadia areas. Once you get here make a manual save. There will be a nice path along the cliff side with a lot of enemies. Stick to the road and follow it up until you see an enemy on the left. If you stick to the road it will be directly in your path.

The easiest way for this to work is when you see the enemy, make sure you can give your companions the attack command on it. So make sure they are close by before attempting. Once you are ready press UP on the D-Pad to give the order. Once they start shooting start cycling through your weapons on the creature. I would start with Corrosive, then Plasma, and finally Normal shots last. I don't know if the Normal shots have a lingering effect, so I used it last to hopefully make this work better. If it don't pop reload your manual save and keep trying until it does. You will know if it is working or not by looking above the enemies health bar, you should see symbols there. These indicate that the enemy is currently getting affected by the effects of your weapons. Once you see 5 symbols, the achievement will pop.

The achievement is unlocked when you and/or your companion(s) kill an enemy after subjecting it to all 5 damage types. The enemy need not be afflicted with the status effects associated with the damage types when it succumbs. It is only necessary that it be hit with the following 5 damage type attacks.
  • Physical
  • Shock
  • Plasma
  • Corrosive
  • N-ray
The achievement pops the first time you kill an enemy after you and/or your companions hit it with the above 5 damage types. Your first weapon in the game is a light pistol with physical damage. Ranged and melee physical weapons are very common. When you talk to Ludwig at the Edgewater Landing Pad, he gives you the quest Die, Robot! One of the rewards of that quest is the Mag-2-Zap mod he gives you when you retrieve a sealed bundle for him. Mag-2-Zap converts a ranged weapon into one that delivers shock damage.

Plasma weapons are not uncommon early in the game at Emerald Vale. The Bolter plasma pistol can be dropped by enemies. Additionally, the Halcyon Board Approved vending machine at the Edgewater landing pad sells plasma weapons—the higher your level, the greater the variety.

Corrosive weapons can be obtained as early as Emerald Vale but are uncommon. If your base, unadjusted hack skill is at least 40, you can buy the Mr. Acid and Mag-2-Melt mods from vending machines’ restricted stock. They can be used to convert melee and ranged weapons respectively to deliver corrosive damage. Once you recruit SAM as a companion, he only delivers corrosive damage with his built-in acid-spray gun. Thus, the easiest way to inflict this damage type is to have him in the party and use him to attack the enemy.

N-ray weapons are the most difficult to find. The unique, named heavy N-ray weapon Purpleberry Launch can be found in Cascadia behind a locked door. The Mr. N and Mag-2 Ray mods can be purchased from vending machines’ restricted stock once one’s base, unadjusted hacking skill is at least 40. They can be used to convert melee and ranged weapons respectively to deliver N-ray damage. For more detailed information on how to come by N-ray weapons, refer to Solution for Patient N In The Outer Worlds

Having obtained weapons that inflict the 5 types of damage, target a large enemy. The enemy must be robust enough to absorb the 5 types of attacks before succumbing. A good location is Fallbrook on the Planet Monarch. Recommended companions are SAM for corrosive damage and Nyoka for plasma damage with her default plasma light machine gun or equip her with a more powerful plasma ranged weapon.

Set both companions to defensive so they will only attack on command. Set them both to ranged and medium distance. Ensure you are equipped with ranged physical, shock, & N-ray weapons. Although melee weapons will work for the achievement, it is best to initiate the attack against your target at distance so that you can deliberately cycle through the 5 damage types.

A good loadout might be an ordinary unmodified Hunting rifle in the first slot—physical damage. An ordinary Hunting rifle modified with the Mag-2-Zap in the second slot—shock damage. The Purpleberry Launch in the 3rd slot. Finally, equip a very powerful high damage-per-second (DPS) weapon in the fourth and final slot. The Light Assault Rifle Mk 3 would be my recommendation— I like to modify it with the Mag-2-Zap for shock damage with its paralyzing taser-like effect.

Head out the main Fallbrook gate. If you’re playing on supernova, this will create an auto-save. If you are playing on a different mode, create a manual save closer to the action. Take a left into the river as soon as you cross the bridge. A little ways in front of you is a mega-Mantiqueen accompanied by several Mantisaurs and/or Mantipillars. Ideally, kill the lesser enemies at a distance from stealth using a Deadeye II/III or a Hunting Rifle Hyper. If you are not playing on supernova, make a manual save at this point.

Wait until the mega-Mantiqueen is not alert. Go into TTD. Attack it with your weakest ranged weapon. In the suggested loadout above, the ordinary hunting rifle would deliver inconsequential physical damage. After the first shot, get out of TTD, switch to slot 2, go into TTD again, and attack the mega-Mantiqueen with the second damage type. In our proposed loadout, this would be shock. Get out of TTD. The first two attacks are designed, intentionally, to result in minimal damage to allow you plenty of time for the 3 remaining damage types.

Switch to the third weapon. In our example, this is the Purpleberry Launch. Wait for the enemy to get within range. Go into TTD (assuming you have some charge in the gauge) and inflict the 3rd damage type. At this point, direct your companions to attack by pressing up on the d-pad cn_up. Once they have each attacked with their respective damage types, switch to your best weapon and deliver the coup de gras. The achievement will pop as soon as you do so. If something goes awry, load your save and try again.

An alternative to using 5 weapons, each with a different damage type, is to use the Prismatic Hammer either by itself or in conjunction with other weapons. The following guide shows, in detail, how this weapon can be acquired: Solution for Jack of All Trades In The Outer Worlds

The Prismatic Hammer is a unique science weapon that cycles through the 5 damage types. However, to unlock all 5 damage types, you must have an adjusted science skill of at least 80. Note that if you have Vicar Max and/or SAM in your party, either by himself or both together can substantially boost your science skill. Wearing of armor and/or helmet that confers a tech skill bonus or a science bonus will also boost your science rating.

The Fallbrook mega-Mantiqueen is still a good target. The Prismatic Hammer is a two-handed melee weapon so it must be used at closer range. Its charge attack provides a moderate stand-off distance but takes longer to deliver the attack. With adjusted science of at least 80. as before, dispatch the lesser enemies from a distance. When the mega-Mantiqueen is unalert, sneak up on it. Go into TTD and attack with the Prismatic Hammer. Don’t change weapons. Instead, the Prismatic Hammer will cycle through all damage types. The mega-Mantiqueen is robust enough that it will not die until the Prismatic Hammer has gone through at least one complete cycle. When it dies, the achievement will pop.

One can mix and match. For example, if your adjusted science skill is below 60, you will not be able to use the Prismatic Hammer’s corrosive attack that activates at [science 60] and its N-ray attack that activates at [science 80]. Equip a companion with a ranged or melee N-ray weapon and, also, take SAM along for his corrosive weapon. Use the same prismatic hammer tactics outlined above but, this time, give your companions the order to attack (cn_up) with their N-ray and corrosive weapons. The prismatic hammer will cycle through physical, plasma, and shock while the companions provide the N-ray and corrosive damage. When the mega-Mantiqueen is killed, the achievement will pop.

Equip your companions with low level melee weapons, each one with one of the desired damage types. Equip a gun yourself with each of the three other damage types, two low level one high level. Go to Monarch with its more robust enemies and assign your companions to attack the same enemy. With their low level weapons they will do little damage and give you plenty of time. Shoot the beast with each of the low level damage guns once, then finish it off with the high level gun.

The specific set up I used was one companion had a corrosive melee weapon (level 10), one had a shock melee weapon (level 5). I had a pistol with physical damage (level 1), a plasma rifle (level 6) and then finished the enemy off with a level 35 N-Ray weapon.

The five damage types in the game are Physical (no additional attribute), Plasma, Shock, Corrosive, and N-Ray. With N-Ray weapons being so rare, you'll obviously need to wait until later in the game to go for this. It's also a good idea to wait for harder enemies such as Mega creatures so they can take enough damage. Your best bet for this is to bring two companions with you and equip each of them with a weapon type you need. For instance, give one plasma and one physical. Then, equip yourself with the other three. Make sure your allies land at least one hit each, and then quickly cycle through your three weapons and hit the enemy with the final three. Once the enemy dies, the achievement will unlock.

I did this by accident, but the point I did it is after the Point-of-no-return.

The iconoclasts (if you sided with then instead of MSI) will blast their way in with chemical weapons and energy weapons.

Hit some one with the n-ray damage. give your companions weapon damage that compliments yours, having three types of damage. I did this by allowing the Iconoclasts to take point and hitting them from a distance. If you struggle, Nyoka's avility does a form of elemental damage and can be used to make up the fifth if you have to.

A purple "Jock" installation with a "Mag-2-Luch" module can be found in Cascadia in a house next to the broken "Bottling Plant" sign. You need to go up the stairs, open the door and in the back room in the sink - voila!!!

You give your partners 2 types of one damage, 3 for yourself, send them to the bug or someone healthy with a long life, when they start hitting and shooting, then we turn on the slowdown and fire 1 shot each from 3 guns and finish off

There are five types of damage in the game: kinetics, corrosion, plasma, electricity and N-radiation. You can juggle five guns, or you can give a couple to your partners, this will simplify things. It is enough to hit the enemy once with each type of weapon, and then kill him in any available way. The main problem: so that the enemy does not die before you have time to use your entire arsenal. A great target to achieve is a Beetlesaurus womb or a fat Raptotototam.
