How to unlock the Ludwig was Right achievement in The Outer Worlds - Definitive Guide

Missable Achievement

This achievement can be earned via the main quest "Foundation", however whether this mission is available to you depends on how you handle the Emerald Vale power crisis near the beginning of the game.

Here's how I did it:
* Redirected the power back to Edgewater.
* Convinced Reed to step-down and for Adelaide to take over as leader of Edgewater. (Comes Now The Power)
* Get the NavKey to Monarch (Passage to Anywhere)
* Learn the location of the chemicals (Radio Free Monarch)
* Steal the chemicals for Phineas (The City and the Stars)
* Plant tracking signal for Sophia (Long Distance)
* Meet with Sophia and agree to sort out Edgewater (Long Distance)

This should give you the mission "Foundation".

I believe there are multiple possible options that can differ from the above that you could take and still give you the mission. Turning in Phineas at the start of the game may short cut the time it takes. Although I haven't tried this myself.

This was my last achievement. I did a speed run and did the first two you mentioned and the last two. No need for everything in between. I killed the Iconoclasts. Did the 2 quests to get MSI favor to stop the broadcasts. Went back to the Broker and recruited him for the board. Once I got back to Sophia she gave me the Foundation quest.

I chose to reroute power to the Botanical Lab and killed Reed and his guards in Edgewater, stole the chemicals for Phineas, planted the corrupted tracking Signal for Sophia and she still gave me the Foundation mission and completed the achievement.

Martel18 is correct. I did the same steps - sent power to the deserters, killed Reed, used the corrupted signal -- and I got the Foundation quest to use the automechnicals to wipe out Edgewater. Achievement popped when I killed all the automechanicals.

@Inspector Adam - There is special arrangement, you need to work with the Board to turn in Phineas in order to start working with Sophie, and you need to make sure you don't both: send power to Edgewater + leave Reed in charge. This automatically resolves Signal Point in Space without getting the Foundation mission.

Is it possible to get this achievement while playing an anti-Board character, I.e. siding with Phineas the whole time?

Looks like this was patched and you now must complete the quest "Foundation" up to and including destroying the automechanicals in Edgewater to receive the achievement, rather than just starting the quest.

I did the three quests to get the NavKey but I still have to pay 10,000 bits for it? Why?

I can confirm what Fightclxb said, this achievement pops after you destroy the mechs in Edgewater.

I got an instant botched job when assigned Foundation. Not sure why. Suspect it's because I destroyed all the automechs on my first pass through the geothermal plant. There weren't any online to get the bugged code from.

I just wanted to post that I followed Ape King Irae's suggestion with only a few differences.

1) I had indeed, already ratted out Phineas
2) I went and killed Reed BEFORE meeting Akande in person

When I met her she said that Edgewater was unproductive for years and needed to be dealt with.

I then received the Foundation quest and carried it out unlocking the achievement after destroying the last robot.

if you are like me and didn't have saves to load for this achievement the video guide on "Supernova" works as a crazy fast way to get this. Follow the guide up until the 48:40 mark then instead agree to turn on Phineas plant the trackers and meet up with Sophia. Have your persuade at 65 to convince Hogarth at the geothermal plant to let you start the termination protocol without fighting cause him and his goons will fuck you up, then just go to Edgewater stay alive find Ludwig Miller in Edgewater and guide the automatons to him because he will singlehandedly win you this while you hide cause you'll be incredibly under leveled if your just trying to bang this out as quick as possible.

Worked for me like a charm hope it works for someone else.

It seems there's no need for any special arrangement for this one. Just complete the 'Signal point in space' main quest, which intertwined with 'Free radio Monarch' quest. Afterwards, Sophia will discuss Edgewater situation. You get the 'Foundation' quest once you accept her proposal, otherwise, Akande and the Board will start attacking.

The quest is very short. Activate termination protocol then kill Automechanicals, that's it. Achievement should pop as soon as you kill the last Automechanical.

I can confirm that you can (I got the Foundation mission with 100% negative reputation with the board). After you get the Dimethyl Sulfoxide in the main quest The City and the Stars, you'll be contacted by Adjutant Sophia Akande with an offer to betray Welles. I told him about it and he insisted that I plant the tracking signal but corrupt it (you have the option to plant it normally or plant and corrupt it).

I corrupted it, and then once returning to the Unreliable Akande contacted me again asking to meet in Byzantium, unaware of the deception. Once there she asks you to side with her and destroy Edgewater. I just made a save before the conversation and then reverted after.

So I was able to get both of these in a single playthrough. Sort of.

Made a save when Akande asked me to rat out phineas, and she gave me a quest.

Initially I convinced everyone to go back to edgewater and left tobson in charge, and I got Mightier than the Sword as soon as I accepted the quest.

However, I reloaded my save, went to edgewater vefore ratting out phineas, killed mister tobson and fast traveled directly from his office to my ship, and proceeded to rat out phineas like normal.

When I met up with akande, she gave me the robo destruction quest instead of the quest that gets you the Mightier Than The Sword achievement.

Hope this clears up any missinformation that you don't have to restart your entire game. You may even be able to kill Tobson after you rat out phineas but BEFORE you talk to akande in person. I really don't know. I just had figured Id have to pl lay this through a rth time just for both of these stupid achievements but nope, did what I did and now got em both with a decently timed manual save.

After I killed the robots that stood over the corpses of all of the townspeople, I got the chievo.

Cheers.

MISSABLE

This guide is for anyone following Peace In Our Time, you can actually get both of these with a simple hard-save.

Following the previous achievement, you want to:

* Divert power to Edgewater
* Convince Deserters to return, leaving Reed in charge
* Turn in Phineas to the Board to start working with Sophia
* Progress story until you resolve the Radio Transmitter and the UDL ship crashes

At this point, Signal Point in Space will change and ask that you return to Sophia. Before you do, head to Edgewater, up the elevator to Reed's office and kill him and his two bodyguards. The rest of the town won't even notice. Now when you talk to Sophia, she'll say that Edgewater is in shambles and need you to activate the Termination Protocol Foundation mission.

This achievement will pop as soon as you clean up the final robot.

As a bonus, if you're going for the 3 Negative Faction achievement, killing Reed will immediately give you 100% negative Spacer's Choice. Killing Sophia will give you 100% negative Board, then you're likely close to negative with either MSI or Iconoclast. If not, Roseway is a good choice as I'm guessing this isn't your ideal save to continue the story anyway.

Mightier Than the Sword | Ludwig Was Right
- These are 2 Very Missable Achievements CAN be acquired in the same play-through making the right decisions and using Saves
**Make NEW SAVES often throughout to give yourself options if you screw up along the way, which is easy to do!**

I speed ran these 2 cheevs after my first play-through.

Here's what you must do early in the story:
} Redirect Power to Edgewater (Adelaide tries to change your mind)
} Convince Deserters to return to Edgewater (Only need to do the side-quest for 1 of the 2 people)
} DO NOT make Reed step down!
*I did this before realizing lol

A fair bit later after getting Udom Bedford's Seal from Gladys and agreeing to take out the Cartographer for Sofia. You will then be tasked with sending a signal from Dr. Welles' Terminal in his Secret Lab that you can fly to.
(Don't have to turn in Phineas, you can just send the corrupt signal from Phineas' Terminal)

You will now have to continue with the main quest for Sofia
"SIGNAL POINT IN SPACE"
until you deal with the broadcasts on Monarch , eventually this mission will say
[] Return to Sofia.

**You will want to SAVE before talking to Sofia after you have dealt with the broadcasts**

For Mightier Than The Sword talk to Sophia after making that Save,
then re-load that SAVE

- You can now go to Reed in Edgewater and KILL HIM, you can then return to Sophia and she will make you do a mission involving Edgewater. Finish that side-quest to get the Ludwig Was Right achievement (unlocks right after finishing the automechs in Edgewater).

Doing this will net you both cheevs without having to do a new play-through! :)
*You can now load up any SAVE you like so that you can play the story the way you would like to!

The achievement unlocks during the main story quest Foundation once you kill the last automechanical in Edgewater. The journal entry reads, “Edgewater has become a leech on the colony's dwindling resources. Adjutant Akande wants you to wipe out the town.” Use the terminal in the Emerald Vale Geothermal Power Plant to send the termination protocol. Then, go to the town of Edgewater and kill the robots. The achievement pops when the last automechanical is killed. The quest is still not complete. You must return to Akande to conclude Foundation.

There are two prerequisites for Foundation:
  1. Complete the main story mission, “Signal Point in Space.” This is on the Halcyon path where you notify the board you know the whereabouts of Phineas. You send a tracking signal or a corrupted tracking signal from Phineas’s Lab. Doing so, automatically initiates Signal Point in Space.
  2. Edgewater must be viewed as unproductive in the eyes of the Board.
The easiest way to do ensure Edgewater is viewed as unproductive is, during the main story mission Come Now the Power, is to side with the deserters and put Adelaide in charge. Akande will say, “You handed Edgewater over to a band of dissidents. Adelaide McDivett and her dissidents have no place in the Halcyon that is to come. Edgewater needs to go. I want you to wipe the town out. No survivors.” This initiates the main story mission, Foundation.

However, if you sided with Spacer’s Choice and allowed Reed to remain in charge, Edgewater is viewed as productive by the Board. To create the precondition required for Foundation, BEFORE talking to Akande after completing Signal Point in Space, go to Edgewater and kill Reed. When you speak to Sophia, now that the town is leaderless, she will inform you Edgewater is unproductive and needs to be wiped out initiating Foundation.

To complete Foundation, follow the marker to the terminal in the Emerald Vale Geothermal Plant. Regardless of whether you sided with the deserters or with Spacer’s Choice, you’ll find Corporate Guards in the plant. Captain Hogarth will stop you. Use dialog skills—you have two Lie options and a Persuade option. One of the Lie options is low, around 35-40. The other options are high around 80-90.

Taking Nyoka and Ellie in the party will boost your lie skills substantially. Taking Felix and Parvati with you will boost your Intimidate skills substantially. Additionally, wear armor & headgear that confer dialog skills &/or lie or persuade bonuses. If you can’t pass a skill check, you can fight your way to the terminal.

Use the terminal to send the termination protocol. Afterwards, you are instructed to eradicate the automechanicals. Go to Edgewater and kill all the robots and drones. When the last one is killed, the achievement will pop.

This achievement and saving Edgewater permanently are mutually exclusive. You cannot save Edgewater if you diverted power to the Botanical Lab and/or put Adelaide in charge. You would need a separate playthrough to unlock the associated achievement. However, if you diverted power to Edgewater and allowed Reed to remain in charge, you can earn two mutually exclusive achievements. After completing Signal Point in Space and BEFORE talking to Sophia, make a hard save. Unlock this achievement. Load the hard save and work towards:

The games main story houses this achievement but it cause Parvati to hate you.

Revert the power back to edgewater abd then go and get the regualtor. Then talk to Adelaide.
Get her to tell you the secret of the contents of her compost the garden grows in, then talk to Reed and tell him she would be a better leader and then tell him how she gets her garden to grow so well.

He steps down, go back to Adelaide and tell her he's gone and she can get in power now.

Get to Monarch by any means neccessary and then find the broker.

Deal with the situation of his blocked comms and after the ship crashes, go back to Sophia.

She'll ask you to destroy Edgewater by sebding the robots in. Do this and then go to Edgewater and kill all the robots. Trophy pops.

*MISSABLE*

This achievement and "Mightier Than the Sword" are opposing, and are the cause of the two playthroughs. There are a number of factors that go in to saving/destroying Edgewater, and the first takes place during the first main story quest, just an hour or two into the game, while the achievements unlock well toward the end, nearly 20 hours later.

As I mentioned above, this quest has a number of steps. The first takes place during the Now Comes the Power main story quest. You will want to send the power to the Deserters, and replace Reed with Adelaide as leader of Edgewater.

Later, when working with Sophia during The Demolished Woman, you will want to either turn Phineas in for real, or send the corrupted signal from his ship to convince Sophia you did. The next step will be Signal Point in Space, which requires you to solve the MSI/Iconclast conflict (doesn't matter how you do this), and when you return to Sophia to turn in this quest, she will offer you another quest called Foundation. Completing this quest will unlock this achievement.

Skipable .
1. On 1 planet you need to support deserters. It is not necessary to place Adelaide in the position of Endzhouter.
2. Then in Byzantium, follow the tasks of Lady Sofia Akande - hand over Fenias to her, and so on until this “Foundation” task with robots.

I didn’t put Adelaide in the post - they gave me a trophy. All I did was switch the electricity to the greenhouses and take the engine

I’ll add a little, it is necessary for Reed to leave his post and Adelaide to take the helm of Edgewater.

If you suddenly kill absolutely everyone in Edgewater, then Akanda will have nothing to send robots for and the prize will not come out.

We support the city and leave Reed in charge. Afterwards, we hand over Wells on the mission “Far Distances” and Sophia will invite you to an audience with her, but before communicating with her, we go to Endzhouter and kill Reed. Next, we communicate with Sofia - we receive and complete the obligatory task on the Monarch, and after that, in a conversation with her, the topic of destroying Enzhouter will be touched upon.

As they wrote in other tips, it is better to support the city and put Reed in charge, then during the conversation after the cartographer’s quest, Sofia will say that Edgewater is blooming and you will receive a trophy for saving the city, and if you kill Reed before the conversation starts, she will give you a quest to destroy Edgewater robots
