How to unlock the Patient N achievement in The Outer Worlds - Definitive Guide

This contains spoilers : Endgame
If, like me, you found no n-ray weapons OR mods up to reading this however, this is for you;

Shortly after Phineas' lab is raided, making it the second to last mission in the game, you are tasked with going into his normally sealed off lab section after a brief fight.

In his room, Phins Phorce, a light machine gun with n-ray as its damage, is sitting plainly on a desk.

I put it on, saved my game, went to Tartarus, the games final location, and used it exclusively to kill the enemies in my way. The gun, with its 53x3 damage, always seemed to effect my enemies, and doing relatively high damage to organics, lead to a quick, easy 20 kills.
Note, I kept firing until they died, I didnt wait to see if n-way acted like poison. Supposedly its like Slag from Borderlands, only increasing damage to more n-ray as opposed to other damage types.

I hope this helps! I hunted for ages but either RNG was unkind, or I missed getting this earlier.

Happy hunting (>*_*)>

^ that's why I didn't bother buying those mods. The damage decrease wasn't worth the bits. I would encourage everyone to just follow this guide and wait until the end.

@The SCHWARTZ 00 - I never bought any of them either, just found them while looting.

As I pointed out, they aren't ideal, but in a pinch they'll still help you get the achievement.

There is a weapon early on in monarch called purpleberry launch. Its damge type n-ray and fires purple berry blasts at people. Its at cascadia I think its called in the first base you come into while walking. The one you don't land at. Right before the bridge is a ladder on a building. Its inside the room at the top of the ladder. Hope this helps someone
Edit just saw the other post about this. Whoops

I had found an the Purpleberry Launch gun on Cascadia earlier and farmed the kills on Ellie's parents using saves.

While I didn't find any weapons already imbued with N-ray damage (besides the Prismatic Hammer, but that really doesn't help as it cycles through the other damage types) I did find weapon mods that added the effect.

One mod is called "Mr. N" and adds N-ray damage to melee weapons. The drawback is that it drops the weapon's damage output by 50%.

The other is called Mag-2-Ray and can make guns do N-ray damage, but this also comes with a 50% damage reduction.

Not ideal, but they're still there...

Actually there is a Legendary N-ray weapon called Purpleberry Launcher.

It's on Monarch in the Cascadia area. With your back to the bridge between the docking area of Cascadia and facing the gate*, you can see a fallen down sign with purple neon letters. To the right of that sign is a ladder. Once there you'll have to lockpick a door with a difficulty level of 55 and some magpicks. Right ahead the weapon will be displayed laying in a sink.

*depending on the story progression the gate can be sealed and might require a key to open, however you can also approach the site from a different side. Do know that the town is infested with maurauders and the landing pad with a lot of raptidons (even two raptidon bosses)

You then need to kill 20 enemies with this weapon while it's effect is active.
Note:
-You don't want to stand too close because otherwise you'll be affected as well.
-The amount of enemies reset to your last save but the achievement tracker will be frozen at your 'high score'.
-I am unsure if you need to turn the enemies to ash for this to count. I do know it will NOT count for your plasma ash achievement.

Alternative methods of obtaining an N-ray weapon:
-On the bridge itself is an elevator that will take you down to a boss enemy that wields an N-ray scythe. I'm not sure if you can always loot it from his body though
-Use the vending machines to get a N-ray mod. These cost 8000 bits (6200 with the related Perk) and are extremely rare and I believe only start appearing from level 15+. I don't recommend this at all, but just in case keep on the lookout and always have the bits ready for it. I put the mod on my Light Machine Gun mark 2 and tinkered it a bit and now it's overpowered.
-Use the science weapon: Prismatic Hammer and swing till your hearts content. This however requires even more luck because you might get the kill with a different damage type.

Ergo the Purpleberry is a good bet for this achievement

Good luck with hunting

I got the weapon after having beaten the game, tinkered the gun, and traveled to Stellar Bay to finish the plasma achievement. After that was over, I mopped up the remaining citizens with the gun. Watching them run around like chickens with their heads cut off was hilarious.

After you pick up the purpleberry launcher, as you walk away from that room look directly across to nearest building - enter same & head to 2nd floor where you can use workbench to tinker your new launcher (if you have the bits and are so inclined). Whether you are at this location for the first time or this is a return trip, plenty of enemies in the area.

Save your game, choose your targets & try to hit all enemies with your N-ray weapon at least once, then kill them all. Check the achievement for total kills, save game (in new slot), then reload your previous save, rinse & repeat until achievement trips.

Note:
if you have tinkered weapon high enough, you can easily kill them using only N-rays (and without any help from companions). That's what I did (using tinkered 383 dps Purpleberry Launcher, and making my companions "hold" passive to keep them out of fight).

- N-Rays are basically an elemental type, they are the least common and are indicated by a pink symbol as seen in the video / thumbnail

- You can use the "Mag-2-Ray" Magazine Mod on a weapon of choice to turn it into an N-Ray weapon

- When you shoot an enemy with this it causes a periodical pink blast causing damage each time and turns them into ash if it finishes off the enemy.

- As for the achievement you can just kill them after they are infected any way you want seeming how the description is worded. So you don't have to turn them into ash for the kills to count unlike the Plasma kills for the We All Fall Down Achievement

- Remember the SAVE trick to help you grind this out faster
One trick that helps with all of the "do this X amount of times" cheevs...use the SAVE feature to RELOAD SAVES helping you grind those out easier. *However people have said that it can cause the tracker to stop going up...so if this happens, try saving after you do one run, SAVE on a new file, then RELOAD the old one. Rinse & Repeat.

I did this achievement by applying the N-ray mod on a companions weapon. Allowing them to apply the debuff, and quickly killing each affected enemy.

In this video guide I will show you how to kill 20 enemies that were infected by spreading N-rays. Now first things first. If you started your character right off the bat with increasing the intelligence and perception attributes. The damage will for weapons will be greater. Also making this achievement easier. Another way to make this easier would be to put points into the ranged category under skills. Not to mention there are some perks called: Scanner and Revenge for increased damage to help out. Also your companions have some perks to help. Nyoka and Parvati both have the perk called: Fine Aim for increased ranged damage.

Now a little insight on the weapons. If you look at the DPS color, it will be pink. Indicating N-ray damage. If you can't find a N-ray weapon, you can always mod one to make it N-ray. Go to your workbench on your ship or wherever. Then go into the weapon you want to use under modify. Next hit RT to go into the magazine types. If you have one it will be called: Mag-2-Ray. Make sure to put that on to start working on the achievement.

This achievement description is a little misleading. In order for this achievement to actually count, they will need to be killed by your weapon. The higher the damage the better the chance. A good spot to get kills for this would be on Monarch. Look to the South by the water. There will be a factory called: C&P Boarst Factory. Head there and once you get there make a manual save. Now go ahead and kill everything in the factory. Including all the people, pigs, robots, and don't forget the worms on the floor count as well. Once you are done reload the manual save and keep going until the progress stops.

Now this is very important. You won't get progress for the same exact enemy. So when you kill someone once, it won't count again. If you need more kills you can return to the factory and new enemies will spawn. Once the final guy you need the achievement will pop.

The achievement unlocks after killing the 20th enemy afflicted with the N-ray-diated status effect. To inflict the N-ray-diated effect, you must use a melee or ranged N-ray weapon. These are denoted with a purple icon in the upper right hand corner of their info panel. N-ray weapons always inflict half the damage of their non-N-ray counterparts but bypass armor so they should not be considered to be 'weaker' weapons. N-ray damage type weapons are rare. Thus, the easiest way to acquire an N-ray weapon is to modify a melee weapon with the Mr. N modification or a ranged weapon with the Mag-2-Ray mod.

To count towards the achievement, the target must first be afflicted with the N-ray status effect and then killed either by N-ray damage or by any other type of attack. Note that auto-mechanicals cannot be infected so one must target biological enemies.

The earliest plasma weapon you are likely to come across is the unique, named heavy weapon Purpleberry Launch. It is in Cascadia behind a locked door (lockpick skill check around 60). It is in the general vicinity of the Ersatz Sweetheart Cake, a quest item you must find for Parvati's Don't Bite The Sun Companion Quest. Look for a locked door near a bottling plant sign. Lockpick it and loot the room for the Purpleberry launch.

The Purpleberry launch is not available until one is well into the game. Moreover, it is not a very good weapon for the achievement. It is not precise and its effective range is only 25 meters. You, the shooter, are likely to be afflicted with the N-rays as well as your targets. I prefer to convert the long range hunting rifle to an N-ray weapon with the Mag-2-Ray mod. The hunting rifle is found at the beginning of the game as a common enemy drop in Emerald Vale.

The Mag-2-Ray mod can also be acquired early in the game provided the player-character has a hack skill of at least 40. This unlocks the restricted items in vending machines. Although the availability is subject to some randomness, the Mag-2-Ray mod is usually available in the T&L or one of the two Spacer’s Choice vending machines at the Edgewater landing pad. One of the vending machines on Groundbreaker, just before the security check point, also, usually carries the item as well. The only drawback is that it is expensive and sells for 8000 bits if no discounts are available.
Image 1

Modify the hunting rifle with the Mag-2-Ray. Unlike the Purpleberry launch, the N-Ray hunting rifle has a very long effective range and is very precise. It deals significant damage per round and has a very high probability of inflicting the N-ray-diated status effect. For convenience, turn on the achievement tracker. Designate this achievement as a favorite so you can track its progress.

If you shoot the target under TTD, a panel on the lower left side of the screen will reveal any status effects the enemy has acquired. Continue to shoot the enemy with the N-ray hunting rifle until you kill it. If you are shooting into a crowd, the target has a good probability of infecting other enemies. They, too, when killed, count towards the achievement. The achievement pops when you kill your 20th enemy infected by N-rays.

You might have more powerful long-range weapons at your disposal for N-ray modding like the Deadeye Mark II or III. However, too powerful a weapon is a disadvantage. The Deadeye, for example, has the execute special effect that could easily kill the enemy before it is infected. The Hunting Rifle or Hunting Rifle Ultra are better choices because they are far more likely to inflict the N-ray status effect before killing the target.

Whereas the Purpleberry launch is not the best choice for this achievement, there are special N-ray weapons that are very effective. Nova Burst—a unique, named N-ray long gun—is acquired by looting the remains after killing the boss in Murder on Eridanos. Eureka—a unique, named handgun—can be found a little earlier on Eridanos in a safe in the Rizzo's Distillation Station. Phin’s Force is a unique, named N-ray assault rifle found when you gain access to the interior of Phineas’s Lab late in the game.

The achievement can also be unlocked with melee N-ray weapons. However, N-ray damage tends to be indiscriminate and it is risky to be too close to the fray. Interestingly, companions have less of a problem with N-ray weapons. One approach would be to equip companions with melee N-ray weapons. They would flail about with the melee weapons infecting the enemies while you could stand back and deliver the coup de grace with a conventional rapid fire ranged weapon.

The bottom line is there are many approaches to unlocking the achievement. My preference is to hide a fair distance away and pick the enemies off one at a time with a hunting rifle modded with the Mag-2-Ray. When the kill count reaches 20, the achievement pops.

When you find a Mr N. Melee mod, modify your weapon to attach it, kill 20 odd enemies will work.

If you are not a melee build (like me) you can passively grind this by equipping the weapon to a companion and setting them to melee only.

Only just a Mr N mod today and I'm at 25% after half an hour.

Towards the end of the game, if you chose the good boy route and skip the Hope to Terra 2, Phineas' lab gets raided by the board. You can get into his otherwise sealed room after either fighting or sneaking past the corporate soldiers. Inside there's a cystypig that holds a keycard for the computer terminal. This opens up the back room. Inside is a weapon called Phin's Phorce. This is an N-ray equipped energy weapon.

Once you have Phin's Phorce, go to Edgewater and save if you don't want your reputation to drop. Make sure you leave any companions on the Unreliable. Now just start shooting the townsfolk with Phin's Phorce and the trophy will quickly pop.

As mentioned above, the N-Ray damage type is fairly rare to find on weapons. The first you'll come across is likely in Cascadia on Monarch (such as Purpleberry Launch or The Candy Cane), and there's a great one in Phineas' Lab that you can get right near the end of the game. Hitting enemies with these weapons can cause them to become infected, and they will then spread the effect to nearby enemies. It almost always takes effect, so essentially you just need to kill 20 enemies with an N-Ray weapon. Bear in mind, enemies can die before getting infected though, so don't worry if it doesn't track on every kill.

The way I did this was to buy a couple of N-ray weapon mods. Now these are quite rare to pop up, so if you're lucky like me, you can get it done quickly.

I modded two weapons, I chose two fairly powerful Assault Rifles. And modded them both to deal N-ray damage. Then I gave one to Nyoka and one to Parvati.

In combat, watch which two they hit. You want to then make sure you use TTD to kill the ones those infect with N-rays, you want a fairly strong ranged weapon, such as a highpowered pistol or Rifle, and modded with a higher crit chance mod. Aim for the head if you can to make sure you can really make the use of your own mod.

Both Humanoid and animal kills count.

Vending machines sell modifications for melee weapons that change the damage type to N-beam. Just attach this modification to your weapon, land in Stellar Bay (since Monarch is the largest location) and clear the road to Cascadia with this weapon. The achievement will appear somewhere in the middle of the path)

You don’t have to bother with purchasing a module, but rather find a ready-made weapon. A purple "Jock" installation with a "Mag-2-Luch" module can be found in Cascadia in a house next to the broken "Bottling Plant" sign. You need to go up the stairs, open the door and in the back room in the sink - voila!!!

You can also find an assault rifle with n-rays in Phineas's room, which you will definitely need to get to along his quest line

There is a modification of N-rays, located closer to the middle of the game, it is rare and we use it on a rifle, the shots will be very powerful, you can of course buy or find weapons with n-rays, but it is more interesting to upgrade wisely.
