This is a boss in Chapter 8 and is a fight as Violet which plays like Bubble Bobble. You need to make matches to prevent the grid from reaching you (which damages you), and the matches you make damage the boss. The bigger the combo, the more the damage. Aim for big groupings in the back of the pack whenever you can, both to maximize damage and to try to make closer groups drop off. Unfortunately, invincibility doesn't work here, and there is RNG involved with what colors you get and the layout of the grid, but keep at it and it shouldn't be bad to finish the Mage off.
