Talk to the merry townspeople in the square to meet the ‘magician’. Talk to him about the types of tricks he does. He’ll offer to teach you to walk on water if you get him some purple berries:

Just to clear up any confusion, the ferryman is on the left side of the merry townspeople. Once you have spoken to him you need to go back to the merry townspeople and trigger the new dialogue option before going to the graveyard as you cannot pick the berries until you have done so.
