You can find the candles in the corners of some rooms randomly , you simply have to take them, it is NOT necessary for THIS achievement to place them in the ritual room, but you only have 3 inventory slots, so if you have taken 3 candles, you must place them in the ritual room to be able to take more in that game.

It's cumulative across games, so nothing happens if you die.
