If you’re playing campaign you have to wait until a story event to unlock Crystal Walls - Level 1. If you’re in Survival presumably it’s available to research at any time. It’s under the Alien Tech tree on the left side. You can research up to Level 3 and it’s probably worth it to do so before building Crystal Walls.
You can build Crystal Walls over any existing wall but if you have a well defended base your guns probably kill all the enemies before they’re even near the walls.
What I did was make a ring of Crystal Walls - Level 3 around my base (I built mine 3 deep but that may be overkill) but past the range of my guns. The Crystal Walls will explode without you having to do anything or even be near them. The next attack the enemies beat through the walls before getting to my base and the walls easily killed more than 100 during a single attack while I waited back at my base to let my guns mop up any survivors.
Remember you can mass build by holding
and mass sell using your Sell Tool the same way. If you need to clear soft rock around your base a Pickaxe (even a white one) is faster than your drill arm once you get the hang of it.
