In Crystal Caves biome there is softer rock that you can dig through. In this biome 
doesn’t bring up your ground radar/mine sweeper it activates your drill arm (the same one with which you can manually mine stuff like Carbonium deposits). You can drill through the soft rock with this or you can use a Pickaxe hand weapon. The problem with the drill arm is you have to aim it with 
while holding which sucks, the drill easiest method being to run straight forward making an “ant tunnel” or side to side shaving the front face off a big block. The Pickaxe (even the white quality one clears just as fast as the red one) is actually faster but takes a bit of practice to get right.
1000 isn’t actually much, during the campaign you get asked to pick one out of three possible locations. I think I’d drilled close to 800 just running towards the base site I’d picked and the remainder just clearing a bit around my initial base. In levels with high amounts of soft rock you can do 1000 in 2-3 minutes.
