How to unlock the Home is Where the Simoleons Are achievement in The Sims 3 - Definitive Guide

To get this achievement, you must own a house that is worth 35k. You can buy things to increase the value, such as TVs, stuff for the kitchen, you get the point. The easiest way to get this achievement, however, is to go to a new game. Then select Choose Household. Then select any household that is worth 35k or more(I moved in with Alice Rannt). From there, go to build and buy, and purchase and add something to the house. Once you do that, go back to live mode. Achievement should be unlocked after you go back to live mode.

easy and simple, i just went to new game>choose household>Landgrabb (bottom right corner) and bought an item, you can buy ANY item you want and you'll get the acheivement.

I was able to do this after writing many best-selling books and moving high up in my career path. Basically you just need to spend enough money on your house to raise the total property value to over 35,000, or you need to move to a house that costs more than 35,000. I never spent any money actually building on to the house, I was able to get the value up by buying expensive things including a pricey car. Everything counts towards the 35k, but the longer you own items, the more they depreciate in value.

Your houses value takes into account the lot you're on and the items inside your sims' house. To check your household's value press and go to the build and buy menu. There you will find your houses value on the bottom right corner of the screen. To up your households value you you can either make the house bigger or you can buy more things to put in your house. The more expensive the item the higher your houses value will go up.

If you've ever bought an item and quickly resold it because you accidently bought the wrong thing you'd notice that you got less money when you sold it then what you just bought it for. That's because item value depreciates over time meaning that brand new car you just bought for $9,000 is going to be worth about $7,000 in a week. Knowing this you should try to buy your items at one time to compensate for item depreciation. Once you buy enough items or make your house big enough to bump its value up to $35,000 the trophy will unlock. Save before you buy all the items though just in case you don't want them all you can reload your save file.

Just keep buying expensive things for your house, you can check exactly how much your home is worth by pressing and going to "buy and build" mode. At the bottom right it will say "Lot Value" and "Furnished" this amount just needs to be over $35,000. It doesn't matter if unfurnished is below $35,000 just that furnished is. Try buying the very best TV, bed, fridge, oven, shower/bath, and computer and you will then be either very close to $35,000 or have exceeded it.
