How to unlock the Refined Palette achievement in The Sims 4 - Definitive Guide

There are 10 levels in the painting skill. Painting is one of the easiest ways to make money in the Sims 4. Each painting can be sold or kept. This skill goes along with the painting career, so you can max out both the skill and job in one go. The lot trait Natural Light will give the sim a +50% skill gain boost and the lot trait Home Studio, will help the sim make higher quality paintings at a lower level.

To get started either buy an easel from the buy mode or purchase the painting skill books from a bookshelf.

I found the easiest way to get this skill maxed out is just to have a jobless sim do nothing but paint in their free time. It helps fund the household while also getting an achievement done.

if just looking for the achievement itself, the sims 4 community has families you can download from the gallery that already have maxed out painting skill (or just about to reach it), so that is the quickest option available

The guide Lymiss wrote is very helpful but I wanted to add a few things in:

You can do this alongside the Painter Extraordinaire aspiration to gain some reward points - this will let you buy perks and such such as instant refilling of your needs, or further perks such as Savant which allows you to gain skills much quicker

You can also do this alongside the Painter career which will increase all your money gain as you go.

To make this easier, and what I did, was used the Digitalistic Sketchpad. You can buy this under the Electronics tab in the store for 1,500 Simoleons. Pause your game, and fill your queue with paintings before speeding time up again. I found this worked much quicker than using the easel, as one set of queued paintings did about 1/4 of the skill bar at higher levels. I didn't use it at lower levels and began using it at level 8, but I imagine it will speed through the small level bars much quicker than using the easel.

Art your Sim makes on the sketchpad will be auto put into their inventory. You can sell it by dragging each painting to the easel and then selecting from there, or you can use the Street Gallery item and sell your paintings on it for a mark up price in a similar way to car boot sales to make more than selling from the easel.
(Remember, there's also an achievement for gaining 1 million Simoleans in one singular household:
The Sims 4RosebudThe Rosebud achievement in The Sims 4 worth 75 pointsGain 1,000,000 Simoleons in a single Household.
)

Personally, I had one Sim working and another jobless Sim work on the skills to max them out, which ensured I had a good income coming in, but others have said playing the Aspiration and Career alongside this helped them max out as well if you are playing with a one Sim household, or also trying to get the painting career achievement:

Any Sim can do this but pair the Sim accomplishing this with the Artist Aspiration for maximum efficiency here. This is really just a grinder like all the other skills but the benefit here is if your Sim paints a masterpiece you gain a lot more exp, its a random chance that increases at higher levels.

Tips I'd suggest
-Any perks that lower needs (Steel Bladder) for instance
-Buy 3 Painting Books from the shelf and have your sim read those as you go for maximum efficiency
-Having a second sim that cooks and cleans will lower the time your Sim needs to be bothered
-Lone Wolf Trait will lower the need to be social
-Enable emotional auras on inspirational items and stack it around the canvas
-Always paint large paintings and always paint the highest unlock painting
-Do not paint Mathematical, playful, etc special mood paintings unless its for an aspiration you are chasing.

An Easel is required for this trophy. The Painting Skill is required for the Painting Career (both branches). To level up, you simply create paintings at the easel.

Your skill will increase faster if you have the “Inspired” Moodlet active. There is a painting you can buy from the store (in Build Mode) that will activate an Aura that will give you a permanent Inspired Moodlet so long as you are close by. The painting, however, requires you to reach Level 3 of either the Painting or Writing career before you can purchase it.

If you don’t have that career level yet, getting inspired is not too difficult. Here are a few different ways to get Inspired:

  • Plunk for Inspiration (Piano Level 3 Required)
  • Pluck for Inspiration (Guitar Level 3 Required)
  • Bow for Inspiration (Violin Level 3 Required)
  • Earn the “Delicious Meal” Moodlet from cooking (Gourmet Cooking level 4 required)
  • Take a Thoughtful Shower
  • Drink Prose and Pop (Mixology Level 1, Bar Required)

Once you have become Inspired, keep creating Paintings and when you reach Level 10 (Max Level), the trophy will unlock.

If you are completing Aspirations for aspiration points, you want to work on Creativity - Painter Extraordinaire one while leveling up this skill.
