The games first few minutes will guide you as to how to light a torch. The game will direct you to a cave where you can snag some dry roots. Outside the cave there is a metal bar. Combine these items. Near the wreckage there is a pot full of oil. Add this to to your torch. Then just go for a swim in the ocean (Not something I'd do on an unchartered planet) and extinguish the torch.
