How to unlock the Right Tool for the Job achievement in The Surge - Definitive Guide

Nano cores are found in the vending machine like boxes that you'll find with an overcharge power core usually high for the area, as high as 80 on the first go around. For this achievement you only need 3 so you'll have to grab multiple of the boxes in order to complete. Simply upgrade a weapon to IV and then upgrade again to V. Recommended to do this before fighting the final boss as doing so throws you into NG+ with no option to say no. Doing this will make you have to level up to IX before using nano cores.

The locations of the vending machines are:
Main Assembly Line : located at the start of the game in the large building you first enter after the medbay, requires 55 Power

Material Depot : located down the ramps after venturing past the medbay, requires 75 Power

Conveyor Hub: There are two on this location, the first is across from the recycling shortcut coming from the medbay. Cross the pipes and run up the catwalk behind the nailgun shooter. Break the boxes and then continue down the catwalk stairs, beware the enemies here as you can easily fall. Requires 60 Power
The second is in the same location as the vending machine cult (see Infidel Achievement) and requires 70 Power.

The Laboratories: In the old biolabs zone, after speaking to Chavez and going underground to get to the greenhouse. Before the elevator that takes you into the greenhouse facilites will be an overcharge spot requiring 80 power.

Restricted Area: Utopia Project: Inside the R&D department after meeting the scientist at the start of the zone the first room you enter, with 3 guards, the box is on the left hand wall, requiring 65 Power.

Server Room: In the executive forum level, to the right of the boardroom, at the end of the shaft is the server room. In the back right corner of the room is a machine requiring 85 Power.

Floor 3 - Rapid Launch Control: The last nano core location is on the third floor of the launch pad. This can be accessed through a vent shaft filled with both a nanite soldier and poison gas, but if you make it through this and take a quick right, up the exo lift will be the nano core box requiring 50 power.

for mark 4 gear you're best off either farming at the end of the game the nanite chrysalis guys or the cerberus armor guards on the executive floor. The two guards outside the board room are always there and have full sets of cerberus gear, should be mk4 gear if i remember.

Best place I found was in Research and development just outside save room there is a guy with a big weapon that drops tier 4 weapon & armour parts and since he is just outside the door you can farm material and scrap easy just by running in and using the gear machine doing this will re spawn him back I was getting around 5000 scrap per kill but I do have implants on that increase scrap drop from enemies

There are 3 new Nano Core locations in the Walk in the Park DLC (six Nano Cores total). Highest you need is 75 Core Power. They're all along the way while playing the story.

You don't need all the main game ones either way. You need 11 Nano Cores total for weapon and armor, which means you need to open six of the Nano Core boxes.

@Eurydace - There is at least one that requires 85 core power just as you get off the roller coaster.

@Lord Agrius - The one found shortly after riding the roller coaster which requires 85 core power only contains 3 implants, not nano cores.

Essentially, upgrade a weapon to maximum level. You first need to upgrade your favorite weapon to Mk.IV with tungsten drops, and then use Nano Cores to bring it to Mk.V. You will need three Nano Cores to upgrade a weapon, and another nine Cores to upgrade a full set of armor for the "Man of Steel" achievement.

Nano Cores are in the Overcharge boxes that need core power of 50-85 to open. There's a total of eight boxes holding 16 Cores, so if you grab each and every Core available, you can upgrade a full set of armor as well as two weapons.

I highly recommend doing this on your first playthrough, as on NG+, you would need to upgrade to Mk.X. Also, I advise against upgrading parts from different sets, and instead focusing on one armor set, to be safe.

Locations of the Cores:

  1. Abandoned Production / Main Assembly Line: requires 55 Core Power.
  2. Central Production B / Material Depot: Past the Medbay, down the stairs, 75 Core Power.
  3. Central Production B / Conveyor Hub: Go past the Nailgun guy, down the Catwalk fighting enemies, 60 Core Power.
  4. Central Production B / Conveyor Hub: by the Vending Cult, 70 Core Power.
  5. Resolve Biolabs / Laboratories: just before going up the elevator in the tunnels, 80 Core Power.
  6. R&D / Restricted Area, Utopia Project: 65 Core Power.
  7. Executive Forum/ Server Room: 85 Core Power.
  8. Nucleus / RLC Floor 3: Go through a corridor where the door closes behind you and poison gas flows in, up a exo lift, Core Power 50.

Nanocores can be found in special chests of 2 pieces in different parts of the locations. Boxes are torn off with an exoskeleton charge of 55 or higher. Nanocores are needed to upgrade weapons and equipment to the maximum level 5 (level 10 in NG+ and so on). Each box contains 2 cores; to upgrade weapons you need 3 nanocores and more than 50,000 spare parts. To be able to use nanocores, weapons must be upgraded to level 4.

I’m not sure about the first playthrough, somehow I didn’t pay attention, but on NG+, cannonballs fell in the last location from shapeless relic mobs, they also transform into a turret and summon a small relic. One core from one mob...

In one playthrough, you can collect nanonuclei for only one set of armor and one weapon. (it’s better to combine trophies just in case)
There are also a couple of cabinets with cores in the DLS of the amusement park.
