How to unlock the Rusty Rat achievement in The Surge - Definitive Guide

This achievement is missable!

Towards the end of the DLC the path you must follow to progress the story will bring you into sight of Rusty Rat for the second time, the first time you saw him getting chased by Carbon Cat. This time he will be tied to a rocket. After viewing him you must not die or take too long or you will fail the achievement.

To save Rusty Rat follow the main path, in the first room you enter (there will be a drone) head counter clockwise and take the lift opposite of where you entered. The lift will take you to Rusty Rat, interact with him and the achievement is your.

Just a heads up, if you accidentally go clockwise and down the lift in this direction (instead of anti-clockwise [right] and up) the rat automatically dies :(

The first encounter is above the train station/depot. After you see the rat tied to the rocket through a glass window you know you're in the second encounter. There's only one way forward after seeing him, leading you to a room with a rocket in front of you (the same the rat is tied to). Simply go right and ride the elevator up. Don't go left and don't ride the elevator down.

Chances are you've unlocked the shortcut to the OPS before heading down, so if missed the achievement (which I did), simply exit the game and reload from the last time you visit medbay, should only lose you about 10 minutes of progress.

To earn this trophy you will need to save Rusty Rat from Carbon Cat's trap. This is a highly missable trophy.

This can be earned once you reach the No Data Available area after you come back to CREO World a second time. This is after you get to the R&D area in the main game and are asked to get back to CREO World. You will then need to ride the Firestarter roller coaster. Through natural story progression you will come to top floor of the CREO Station, where you will see Rusty Rat being chased by the Carbon Cat.

Follow the story path to reach the CREO Skybound Adventure location, where there will be a blue roller coaster and an enemy that will morph. Go past the enemy and make sure to overcharge the power line to the right.

Save Note: Right after charging the power line is the best point to make a back-up save. If you die, or you don't make it to Rusty Rat in time to save him, Carbon Cat's trap will kill Rusty Rat. This will lock you out of the trophy until the next playthrough.

After that follow the path till the metal shaft on an oval window opens. Here you will see Carbon Cat tie Rusty Rat to the Rocket with explosives tied to him. From this point you cannot die. If you do, well, you got to come back in NG+. So be extremely careful. Follow the path, run around the rocket base to the other side, past the drone enemy. Use the EXO-lift to get to the top floor where Rusty Rat is tied up. Interact with him to cut him loose and the trophy will unlock.

Again this is a highly missable trophy. This cannot be stressed enough. So either kill everything around the area, or be extremely good at running past all enemies.

Glitch Note: It has been mentioned by several people that they were able to save Rusty Rat even after dying, which seems to be suggestive that it could be a time sensitive thing. Until more testing is done, to be safe, be quick and try not to die as well.

He is a human in a big rat costume, and will be tied to a rocket when you find him. However, you can only see him through some glass, and need to follow the path around the base of the rocket and up an exo-lift to free him. This section is supposedly timed, so as soon as you encounter him, make sure you head right to his location to free him. Follow the video below.

You can miss the trophy! As soon as you heard the screams of the Rusty Rat for the second time, run towards it before it explodes!

The first time you hear/see a rat, go up to the “depot” and run along the bridges. You can take your time here.

a little later in the location (there will be more cuts, etc.) you will come to a window where the blinds will open - and at this moment you need to run quite quickly: (in the room with the “rocket”, run around and don’t get lost there anymore)
