How to unlock the Melting Down achievement in The Surge - Definitive Guide

This achievement requires you to kill all 5 Smelter Bots around the game.

The first is located at the start of the game by the med-bay, instead of going right around the outside of the building to get to the P.A.X fight, keep going towards the right, behind some pipes will be the first bot, beware as these guys can one shot you early on so it may be worth to come back later.

The second and third bot spawn in the middle of the recycling floor, they will be on their own platform separated by a small gap. You can either jump the gap or go upstairs and activate the bridges. There does seem like a bug with these as on my second and third playthrough of NG+ one of them didn't appear but the coin was there.

The fourth bot in order will be in the old biolabs area. When you finally get outside to the right of the Large Greenhouse facility will be a small gap leading into the toxic waste. The smelter bot is sitting here, beware as the gas does increasingly more damage the longer you stay in as well as some drones will shoot you. The good thing is there is a first aid machine at the top of the stairs where you come in from so you can plan ahead to heal here and then return. Recommended to come back later when you have good weapons and a lot of healing.

The last smelter bot is hard to miss as when you come back to the main facility from the biolabs you will see a large bridge where the enemies are attacking each other. Using your new drone powers you can open the gate behind these enemies and reveal another guard and smelter bot in the corner.

Final bit: these don't have to be on the same playthrough, if you kill 4 on one playthrough, as long as on NG+ you kill the one you are missing the achievement should pop.

One of the smelter bots didn't spawn for me at recycling but I still got the achievement, I picked up all the coins maybe it's tied to that.

I think there is a bug with the smelter bots in recycling where one just dies randomly but it still drops the coin and counts for the achievement.

I think that robot is being killed by that lady you give the staff to. She mentions something needing to be done about them and then it disappeared.

Oh wow that makes a lot of sense actually. I just remember on my first playthrough seeing 2, and then never seeing it again. Very nice observation

It's Irina that kills the second one in recycling. If you give her the MG Negotiator staff or one more powerful in NG+ she is able to kill the smelter bot and survives. Apparently if you give her a weaker staff she suffers the same fate as not being given one and does not survive the battle with the smelter bot and dies. (This is based on what my cousin told me so I haven't confirmed it for myself yet, will update once I do.)

Wildandcrazygal is completely right. Irina needs the MG Negotiator or better in order to survive till your next encounter with her. If you give her one off these weapons she will destroy one of the bots.

This will still pop even if you only killed 4 of them yourself, and Irina kills the fifth.

The Liquidator Gear nullifies poison damage if any are having problems with the smelting machine in the toxic area 🤘🏻

Footpickle's guide is really good, definitely go check out his solution and give him a thumb up.

Only thing I feel he forgot to mention was a strategy. I'll also include a video showing you the location of each bot as I feel that's easier to follow.

You want to grab Smelter bot's attention and make him do his spin attack, where he spins his arm for about 3 seconds. After this, just quickly jump as close to his body as possible. Try to avoid his arm while doing so because he has this "poke" attack. Once you're close it's all about circling left or right and hitting his sides. He also has these 2 attacks when you're up close. Slams his body down, deals a massive amount of damage if you're really close, easy to predict, arm stops following you and he lifts himself up a bit. Once you see this, jump back and once he's down you can continue. The second attack is a gas, not to worry it only slows you down a bit and prevents stamina regeneration.

For Smelter bot 4 you want to wait after you rescue Dr. Chavez. "Dog" robots will be replaced by flamethrower guys. Also try to have full liquidators set, as that will prevent gas damage. There are 2 flying bots on your left when you enter, make sure to kill them by luring them out before trying to kill the Smelter bot. Just as Footpickle said if you're low on health run back up the stairs and replenish your health.

Here is the video guide, all credit goes to NonstopTrophies. If you used this video please give him a thumb up.

Easier strat but takes longer. Just stand at a distance and hit it with your drone, you'll only do 2 damage a go but you can afk it and play something else far better while you plink away. No risk once you see where it's tether distance is.

You may want to kill the 2nd and 3rd Smelter before completing the quest where you have to give the woman a staff weapon. It could possibly void the achievement for you as it did for me, as she kills one of them herself after you give her a staff. A coin will still appear where the smelter would be. Goodluck :)

You will need to fight and destroy all 5 smelting machines in the game. These smelting machines will be yellow and they will have fire in their mouths surrounding the gears. You will need to find all 5 of these and destroy them. They have weak points that open up at times that you will want to aim for in order to destroy them faster. Once you’ve destroyed all 5 of them you will obtain the trophy. See video below for locations:

Smelting machines are stationary huge machines that look like excavators with flaming shovels. Their weak point is their side that pops periodically open, revealing the vulnerable part. You need to defeat all five of them, this can be done over several playthroughs as long as you kill each of them, and not the same one five times.

The first is located in Abandoned Productions, in the part with toxic gasses, hiding behind some shrubbery. Two and Three are located in Central Production B, in the Recycling Area. You need to extend the bridges first to get to them. The fourth machine is outdoors in the Biolabs area. As it's standing inside toxic waste, it's best to have a full Liquidator Gear set to give you immunity. You encounter the fifth and final machine when you return to Central Production B, and open the huge door on the other side of the bridge.

Each machine will drop a Shining Coin, necessary for the "It Lives! It Sniffs! It Conquers!" achievement.

The first car is in the starting location on the road to the boss, three cars are in the second (one can be reached only after receiving a drone upgrade to open doors) and the fifth is in the yard on the infected heel in the third location.

I don’t know what this is connected with, but: both during the 1st playthrough and during NG+, in my second location, at the waste processing site, there was only one smelting machine, and the second one, which should have been nearby, did not appear. Thus, it turns out that I only destroyed 4 cars... but they still gave me the trophy.

One car automatically dies after you press a button in a room with an elevator in the same location. And from the second one, 2 coins fall (as I understand from foreign forums, it is for this reason that the coins stopped falling as loot, but straight into the pocket because they were buggy)

Melting machines are easy, but take a long time (about 15 minutes) to kill from a distance with a drone.
