How to unlock the Deal With The Deceiver achievement in The Talos Principle - Definitive Guide
To get this one, you need to wait until you near the end of the game. You will have a conversation at the terminal. Before doing this, you should make sure to do these two first:
This is a point of no return. If you do not do the previous two first, you will not have another chance.
IF YOU DO NOT "DEAL WITH THE DECEIVER LAST, YOU WILL MISS A LATER ACHIEVEMENT.
The choices should be:
-I accept that some of my beliefs face difficult challenges.
-I equated personhood with humanity, which was a mistake.
-I claimed to have knowledge about the world that I simply can't confirm.
-No, I see now everything I've argued was flawed.
-I refuse to trust anyone, including myself.
-We do.
Alright so there is a branch of 4 achievements tied to this particular ending. To get the ending achievement you need to climb the tower to the top and complete all the puzzles in between to get there. Climbing the tower is one out of 3 endings so this achievement is part of 1 ending branch.
This achievement is that achievement you should continue the story on. I recommend you complete the other two conversations before that.
The conversations info
The conversation always gives you the two options at the start:
- “What holes? There are no holes.”
- “I accept that some of my beliefs face difficult challenges.”
Conversation 1:
Conversation 2:
Conversation 3: (This should be your last achievement because it branches into the ending)
I accept that some of my beliefs face difficult challenges.
I equated personhood with humanity, which was a mistake.
I claimed to have knowledge about the world that I simply can't confirm.
No, I see now everything I've argued was flawed.
I refuse to trust anyone, including myself.
We do.
This achievement requires that you follow a certain dialogue path with MLA in the computer terminals in all of the puzzle worlds. This achievement is one of three possible with MLA, and it conflicts with Silence The Serpent (30G) and Press The Serpent (30G). Note that this achievement is also a prerequisite for Take It With You (30G). Please refer to Step 3 in the roadmap to ensure you unlock all of these achievements without needing to start a new playthrough.
After around 15 interactions with different computer terminals, you will eventually reach the critical point where the paths branch and you can unlock different achievements. This critical point is where your two response options are
What holes? There are no holes.
or
I accept that some of my beliefs face difficult challenges.
For this achievement, the responses you need to choose are:
- "I accept that some of my beliefs face difficult challenges"
- -pick anything-
- -pick anything except "There's nothing else I'm prepared to doubt quite yet"-
- "No, I see now everything I've argued was flawed"
- "I refuse to trust anyone, including myself"
- "We do"
Note about the MLA: Fight Milton during your conversations with him, disagree with him a lot; don't make yourself seem stupid. Be moral. Milton is the serpent and wishes to cloud your mind. If you agree with him for the majority of the game, you may have the final conversation with him earlier than planned but you WILL miss out on a few trophies. We will refer to this alternate, bad path as Early Path. The path we want will be referred to as the Trophy Path.
Early Path
If you don't fight against Milton and you show him that you share similar views with him ie; have a negative opinion of ELOHIM, think everything you're doing is a waste of time, you're no different than an animal etc. You will have your final confrontation with him earlier. It'll go something like this:
Quote:
"Suppose you get out there with all the human beings.
What're you going to do, rinse them for all they've got without a care for a soul?"
If you choose 'Precisely' and continue to play along with him, you will go down the Early Path and you will only be able to attain Deal With The Deceiver. If you choose 'I'd only do what's best for me within a moral framework', you will go down the Trophy Path so long as you continue to argue with him.
Trophy Path
Toward the end of your journey, the MLA will become less and less patient with you. He will become more snarky and sarcastic. If you beat all levels in World A and World B, then you should encounter him at the end of World C6. The conversation will start like this:
Quote:
"Welcome back. There are going to be some changes around here.
Do you know what your problem is? It's that you keep trying to reconstruct fairy tales, but refuse to recognize the holes in your understanding.
Thus far you've had entirely too much freedom to question my wisdom. From now on I do the talking, you do the agreeing."
From here on you can go down 3 paths. Don't forget to Restore Backup to choose another conclusion for this encounter.
Press the Serpent
-I accept that some of my beliefs face difficult challenges.
-Pick Anything
-There's nothing else I'm prepared to doubt quite yet.
-I am unique.
-So long as I am physically free I can make a difference.
-So that's it? You've given up on everything?
-Are you uncomfortable when someone else is asking the questions?
-If there's no point in anything, why are you talking to me?
-Are you avoiding the question?
-Why does it bother you so?
-Pick anything until the conversation ends
Silence the Serpent
-What holes? There are no holes.
-No, I stand by everything I've said. These matters are beyond doubt.
-I am special.
-So long as I might have chosen otherwise I can make a difference.
-/banish
Deal With The Deceiver
-I accept that some of my beliefs face difficult challenges.
-Pick Anything
-Pick any but do not pick There's nothing else I'm prepared to doubt quite yet.
-No, I see now everything I've argued was flawed.
-I refuse to trust anyone, including myself.
-We do.
*This path is needed for the Take It With You trophy.
