How to unlock the Know Your Limits achievement in The Talos Principle - Definitive Guide
Sometimes if you spend too long in a puzzle, Elohim will say something like you don’t have to finish this now, you can leave and try other puzzles and come back to this one later.
When this happens, simply leave the puzzle you are in, and the achievement will pop.

I kind of agree with elquitone that this achievement is missable. If you go for the 100% ending and didn't get this you'll need to start a new game since there is a limited number of backup saves that won't get you too far back.

This ended up as my last achievement. Same thing, I didn't do it early on and Elohim wouldn't speak up later in the game. I started a new game after finishing everything else, did the first three greens, opened the first door, then just wandered around in the first yellow puzzle for a bit. Only took a few minutes to play that far, and maybe 10 minutes before the voiceover played and I was able to trigger the achievement.

I've now unlocked this on 4 accounts without any issue.
2 of the accounts were gold, the other 2 silver.
The principle of this achievement is:
- you enter a level.
- you've been in there for 10 minutes without having got the sigil part.
- you get a friendly chat from Elohim.
- you give up without taking the sigil part, and walk back out of the level.
I've unlocked this using world A map 1 at the very beginning of the game.
Once you get in the yeard with the locked gate, enter the right hand level.
This is the "Peephole" puzzle.
For 2 accounts, I stayed standing still at the window, using a wired controller.
For the others, I was moving around.
For all, I started a stopwatch when I entered the "level",
and Elohim talked at 10 minutes on the dot, every time.
I have no idea why others are saying you cannot expect to unlock this achievement if you just wait doing nothing. It works without problem.
As a note, it works exactly the same way on the windows version of the game.

I recommend going for this in Building C - level 7 in the puzzle "Prison Break" (the puzzle is straight ahead as you teleport into C7).
For this achievement, the description is quite ambiguous but the requirements are to spend an unspecified amount of time solving a puzzle without actually collecting the sigil until after Elohim reaches out to you. For me in this puzzle, I had to wait over 17 minutes before Elohim finally spoke to me. I do not know how many dialogue options there are and what triggers one over another but for me on this level, he said: If the answer does not come to you, do not despair. The worlds of my garden are many. After those words of encouragement, I went ahead and left the puzzle and as soon as I passed through the purple gate, the achievement popped!
*It is important to know that you cannot be standing still and expect to get the achievement - I assume that the game wants you to be actively trying to solve the puzzle, but I pointed myself into a corner and rubberbanded my controller so as to be "running" into the wall. If you're playing in first person mode, I would recommend going into the Game Options and changing your preferred view to over your left or right shoulder or to behind player so that you can actually see yourself moving (in first person, it looks as though you're standing still, even though you aren't!)

Please note that while this achievement is technically possible earlier in the game, it seems as though the puzzles aren't challenging enough for Elohim to speak up, or at least not in my experince.
Should you chose to solve the puzzle and grab the sigil at this time rather than leave, you can instead unlock:
The Extreme Persistence Detected achievement in The Talos Principle worth 39 pointsTry, fail, try again, fail again, eventually succeed.
While solving a red sigil puzzle, after you spend approximately 10-15 minutes of time active in the puzzle (by that, I mean you can't simply stand idle; you'll need to rubber band your thumbsticks if you want to walk away), Elohim will start talking to you. He'll essentially tell you that there's no shame in giving up and leaving and coming back later to try again. After he finishes talking, you can either leave like he suggests, which unlocks this achievement, or stay and actually solve the puzzle to unlock Extreme Persistence Detected (20G).
Same exact trophy as Extreme Persistence Detected, but instead of completing the puzzle just leave the puzzle entirely.
You have to leave a puzzle without getting the Sigil after Elohim tells you that there is no shame in leaving. You can get this in Peephole pretty easily. Use the first Jammer to jam the mine that you can see through the window then stand there for a few minutes. Walk around the level a bit after that, and he should talk to you. I've been told that 10 minutes is the magic number for the minimum amount of time to leave it unsolved.
If you occupy a test chamber for around 10 minutes Elohim will suggest you go elsewhere- If you exit the test chamber without solving it upon receiving this suggestion this achievement will unlock.

If you try to solve a puzzle for a long time (about 10-15 minutes), Elohim will advise you to postpone the solution and come back later. Follow this advice and leave the level.
