How to unlock the Split Personality achievement in The Talos Principle - Definitive Guide

Easy place I found to do this was level C2. There is a large church like structure with a purplish door. To the right of the purple door, on the ground in the corner, is a paint bucket. To the left of the church is the entrance to "A Ditch and a Fence" puzzle. Inside it in the courtyard with the ditch is a recorder. Put the paint down, start the recording and pick the paint back up and walk up to a wall and press A. Wait a few seconds then stop the recording. Now watch your double paint the QR code and read it.

Thanks, don't think I would've figured that one out myself!
Also, it's a very clever touch by the designers that whatever message you choose to write, when you read it on the wall it is actually a response to your own message!
eg. I wrote 'Am I the only one around here that thinks for themselves?'
But when I read it, it says 'Actually, you are the one who is designed to think you are thinking for yourself!'

Mind. Blown. 😮😮😮

Excellent game by the way!

Should note, if you get Leave Your Mark without using the recorder, then the paint will be gone and it will make this achievement harder to get. I did that and thought I had missed my opportunity. Luckily, Paint Buckets do spawn in other locations when you've completed the sigils in the area. I got this in C6. After doing the 3 puzzles and the star in C6 I found a paint bucket to the right of the Seven Doors entrance (right as you look into the puzzle). There is a corner with a conifer tree, two graves and a QR code message from a "Sheep" I found the paint bucket on the floor right of the tree. I then took the paint into the seven doors puzzle to make use of the recorder inside.

For me, the paint in C2 was behind a tombstone, to the left of 'The Short Wall' entrance.
Then just did the rest of the steps as listed and it worked perfectly, thanks!

First guide with C2 just worked for me. Thanks! I would've never figured out this one on my own.

I'm in C2 and there's 3 paint spawns, but none are spawning for me.

I've tried reloading the checkpoint from start menu. I've tried actually "Stopping" the game which brings you to the main menu and going back in. I've tried FORCE QUITTING the game and starting i tback up. The bucket doesn't spawn for me.

I don't know why none of the Paint Buckets in C-World stopped spawning for me... but I eventually found one in B-4 - the level with the huge Sphinx. Behind the archway, behind the sphinx, see photo for location. https://i.imgur.com/AkZRPSp.jpg

As GRAND NOBLE points out you can do this in B4 but I'm starting to think that the paint might spawn in different places as mine was just around the 1st left corner as you enter the B4 world, continue a little bit further along the wall & you'll find the Wrap Around the Corner puzzle which has a recorder wave

+1. It won't let me thumbs-up because I'm playing on Windows, but this solution works.

It was really hard for me to get the "Paint Message" prompt to show up. I kept moving around the wall and it would appear for a split second and then change back to "Drop Bucket"

I recommend going for this in Building C - level 2 (I’ve included a text description below the video for those who prefer it!)

Video guide

This my video solution using the strategy outlined by Lathanar - slight difference in my game as the paint bucket was to the left of the purple door, but otherwise, a great strategy. You don’t see the achievement pop because I didn’t use a capture card.

Text guide
As you are teleported into C2, you are directly in front of a religious building facing a purple door. Walk towards this door and on the ground to the left of the door is a paint bucket. Grab it then do a 180 and immediately to your right is the puzzle “A Ditch and A Fence”.

In this puzzle, walk up to the recorder and place the paint bucket on the ground to the right of it. Start the recorder, grab the bucket and walk up to the wall left of the blue barrier to paint your message (I chose the last option). Go back to the recorder to end/play your recording and then look at/read the QR code that “you” just painted.

If you haven’t already, doing this should also unlock Leave Your Mark.

*Please note that the Recorder is unlocked in Building B, is story related and unlocking it cannot be missed!

Requirements: Self Co-Op machine unlocked, bucket of paint.

Take a bucket of paint in to a level with the Self Co-Op machine, (they're the only things other than yourself that will go through a purple field). Start the recording mode and paint a QR code.
Go back to the machine, start the playback mode, read the QR code "you" paint.

Achievement will unlock when you read the QR code.

Earliest opportunity: B4 (quit and reload if the paint doesn't appear)

While recording your actions in any level- if you are able to do so- use a paint bucket as your recorded self then look at the painted message as your normal self.

Note: This does not consume a paint bucket.

EDIT: You enter C2 facing a pink door on a church, there is a paint pot behind an orange tree in some shade on your right at the building itself, then turn to face the portal, second puzzle on you right is "the short wall", enjoy!

This is gonna be a little bit of an RNG game. Basically you have to be in a Level that has a Recorder puzzle AND a bucket of white paint laying around. They spawn randomly and there is no set way of forcing one to appear. After finding a paint bucket, go into the puzzle that has a recorder with the bucket in hand, activate the recorder and go paint a QR code on a wall while being recorded and wait 5 seconds. End the recording and go read the QR code your ghost has painted. Using every bucket of paint you find DOES reduce the amount of buckets found later on, but from what I've researched it's not too bad. One level I tried that always had a bucket of paint for me to repeat the trophy was World C-7. There is a bucket to your left around some broken walls next to an audio log, pick that up and head into the recorder puzzle behind you.

Another level that I noticed should have a bucket in it is Star World B. There should be a bucket to your left around the corner, there is also a recorder puzzle here too.

You need a paint can and the ability to record your actions. Paint cans are able to travel through puzzle entrances with you. They are commonly found in levels B4 and C2. What you need to do is record yourself painting a wall within a puzzle and then play it back so you can read what you painted.

This achievement requires you to have a bucket of white paint and a recorder in the same area. This won't be possible until you get to World C where the recorders are. There are multiple places where this is possible, such as C-2 and C-4. In C-2, head up to the church where the purple door is and look for the white paint bucket in the corner. In C-4, there is a white paint bucket on the ground behind some rocks near the spawn. In either case, one you have the white paint bucket, head into a puzzle with a recorder (the paint bucket can pass through the purple barriers). Set the bucket down and activate the recorder. While recording, pick up the paint bucket and interact with any wall to paint a QR code, then go back and stop the recording. During playback, scan the QR code that your double paints on the wall, which unlocks this achievement.

Note that the paint buckets respawn if you leave the puzzle hub and return, so this achievement is not missable.

The paint bucket does not always spawn in the same place; on level C-7, in the place indicated in the video, it may not be there. It is also important to know that the bucket can be carried through the purple field. Therefore, I recommend just looking around as you go through the game. If you see a bucket on some level, grab it and look with it into all the rooms of that level. If one of them has a recording device, do what is shown in the video; if there is no recording device, use the bucket just like that and move on with the game.
