When you level up, you will always get a skill point for one of the ability trees. But every 3 levels, you will get a talent skill point. It will be highlighted by an Exclamation Mark when you press the back button, or whatever it's called these days. There will be 3 rows to the left and to the right with various talents, like lockpick, exploration etc. Just choose a talent, and keep investing into it until it unlocks.
I chose Lockpick, as there is an achievement for picking 50 locks and one for looting 40 chests. A lot of these chests will be locked, and you will notice from a distance as they have a red light to indicate they are locked. I unlocked this achievement in the first half hour of chapter 2.
Also, if you want to invest in the first point of the Exploration talent, you will be able to skin animals from there on in, as you will need to skin 200 for another achievement.

The, Pants, Party
Each of the six talents in the game have three levels to unlock. You won't get enough talent points to max them all, so choose wisely what you want to focus on. Also keep in mind there are clothing items that can give bonus talent points, and companions can also give passive bonuses to these. I'd suggest never actually putting a third point into any talent, and use those bonuses to max them out instead. However, that won't unlock the achievement, so either invest a third point for good or do so and reload your save to get the achievement.
