How to unlock the Totally Texas achievement in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - Definitive Guide

This achievement is fairly self-evident, but I will compile what may be obvious with some information other players have discovered.

You have to reach Player Level 50. Your player level is displayed on the top right of the main menu, and it is not the level of specific characters. Fair warning - this is a grind. You will need to get 589,000XP to reach level 50. XP is not earned in private matches so this cannot be boosted.

You earn XP in various, obvious ways such as:
Victim XP:
  • Escaping the map
  • Opening crawl spaces
  • Finding unlock tools, bone scraps, valves, fuses etc.
  • Using your characters ability e.g. insta-unlocking with Connie or barging over family members as Leland
Family members XP:
  • Killing victims
  • Destroying barricades, crawl spaces and doors as Leatherface
  • Placing padlocks as Cook
  • Poisoning items as Sissy
  • Finding footprints as Johnny
  • Collecting blood from the blood basins & feeding Grandpa
If you are playing as a victim you can now leave the game and keep your XP, so there is no point staying to watch the others, unless you all escape you won't get any bonus XP.

If all you are looking to do is get to level 50 as fast as possible then I recommend playing to your strengths. I feel I am a better victim and I personally like stealthing my way around picking locks and trying to open escapes for everybody. Also, you don't earn as much XP as a family member as not every action gives you XP, which is disappointing. On a successful run where I have picked up 3-4 unlock items and unlocked doors for each of those picks, and then I escape, I am getting about 1,700 - 2,000 XP per match. That's the most I have gained as either a family member or victim. So that would mean 340 - 400 matches to reach level 50. You level up quite slowly so this is a grind, and thus far there is no way to cheese this achievement. I think it's a very fun and addictive game so just have fun playing the game and don't worry about this achievement. It will come in time.

I enjoy this game so I will continue to read comments below and test out new ways to gain XP fast. If one method beats playing the game legitimately, I will share it here. Good luck!

There is a double XP Weekend on from the 27th October to the 1st November. Get on while it's easy to level up!

Don't see why anyone disliked, this achievement is simply going to take a lot of grinding public matches. I will say i did notice that exp doesn't seem correctly applied in some instances.
Here's hoping we get double XP eventually.

There isn't a "faster" way to level up and that's not my fault. It is a grind but there's no cheat way to get this achievement. The only known way to get this now is detailed above.

XP is also currently glitched and the game is out a matter of days so I have instructed people to wait the entire match and then exit to the main menu once you have gotten your XP as anything else does appear to result in a loss of XP.

Not much more I can do for you except play the game for you.

Might be worth mentioning that the more you do, the more XP you get in game, like latching doors or opening crawl spaces for survivors or locking doors/crawl spaces etc for family. I’d argue that leather face can net most XP per game if you just run around causing mayhem on every thing you can chainsaw along the way as each adds a little XP lol

I would have thought that was self explanatory, and so far we have no breakdown of how much XP you get for unlocking doors, turning off generators, killing victims etc. These are all things you will do naturally in the game so pointing them out is absolutely pointless as you cannot farm xp constantly to get to level 50 in some illegitimate but quicker way. We also don't know how much XP is required to get to level 50 as the game is out less than a week. Lol.

You can exit using B after dying. It just won't count matches played achievement. The progress screen has a visual glitch but the actual xp you earn is correct.

People have unfortunately been coming across issues if you leave a match before it completes properly. I have had several occasions where I have earned over 1,000 XP and it goes forward but then goes back again. So far there hasn't been a fix so I would err on the side of caution until a fix is announced.

All I can offer is I'm level 21 and to get to 22 is 142,000. Friend said he's level 26 with 207.000. So it looks like we may be playing 1,000+ matches after all lol

I saw a post on Reddit I think like two days ago or something, making a post that a person named "Colin Mockery" was hacking, so I'm not sure if this Colin is the same person but I've yet to see any hacker mess up your score in a match, just their own.

I'm making a spreadsheet of XP and Skill Point totals from each level. It's very incomplete, so please edit it based on your own knowledge if possible.

I have tested your theory P1 TInsane and when playing as Cook and just locking and re-locking padlocks I only got 1,800 XP in a game that lasted about 5-7 minutes as a complete guess. I wouldn't call that a good method to level up fast. Playing the game legitimately is infinitely more fun and you'll actually earn 2k+ XP if you play your role well.

I'm still testing it out, but playing Cook and finding someone with his main ability always grants 50 xp/points no matter what. I've followed people even after spotting/hearing them and it always worked. I've played around 5 games and gotten over 3k xp each one doing this.

I don't seem to be able to edit that sheet on my phone but I'm at level 22 and I noticed I was awarded 10 skill points for hitting level 20 but only 6 for reaching levels 21 and 22, so maybe you get a few extra for "milestone" levels.

As a victim I make a point of clearing as many noisemakers and opening as many crawlspaces as possible. And as Leatherface I destroy as many crawlspaces, doors and obstacles as I can. It all adds up. Also if you die, you still get extra XP awarded for every team mate who successfully escapes so if it's been a long game and it looks like they'll do it it can be worth sticking around for a bit rather than disconnecting straightaway.

Are you sure there's an xp loss? and not just a visual level up bug? Like I've noticed that when I quit out after escaping it says the xp required is 800 and shows a level up. When it really it isn't 800 but more like 10k needed.

@Kenobay I just pressed it once cause it kept his ability going. If the victim is still running after you spot them, the camera will zoom out a bit and you can spot them again within seconds.

Someone on psnprofiles said that they didn't get the achievement for reaching level 50 but they left the match before it ended.
Their next post stated that the achievement popped after finishing a family game. Have you tried that?

Btw, I've found the following for victims.
Also note, that I usually maximize stealth and proficiency so that I can spam open crawl spaces without making noise.

The first item type you find per match is worth 50xp. (Health Vials, Tools, Bone Scrap, Valve, Fuse).
Cutting noise makers gives 25xp. (This includes chickens)
Unlocking a door is worth 200xp, opening is not required. (This may extend to Cook's locks, need to double check)
Opening a crawl space is worth 50xp (This with a helping family member might be a boostable method?)
Using a health vial to get you over 50hp gives you 50xp. However just tapping the use button while 'healthy' gives you the 50xp without using the item.
Following an ally for 20 seconds (gives 50xp?) once per match
Healing an ally gives 50xp once per match
Turning off the generator, turning on the valve, and using the fuse box all give 50xp. These can be awarded multiple times per match
Surviving 1 minute gives 25xp (5 minutes might be +50xp, but I'll need to double check)
Escaping the basement for the first time gives 100xp
Disabling hitchhikers traps give 50xp
Stealth attacks seem to give 150xp
Unsure if grapples give xp
Being the last victim standing give 200xp
(My last non basement exit escape gave 500xp)

I have yet to check the xp for escaping the second zone and the xp for escaping the third vs escaping via the basement exit. Also unsure about xp for immobilizing gramps.

Additionally you get more xp per victim (200 I think) that escapes and a large boost (possibly 500) if all victims escape. I'm unsure if this is awarded to those that were executed.

What I tend to do is open as many crawl spaces as I can see on my way, find a tool, bone scrap and a health vial and aim to unlock 2 doors before opening one and grabbing the xp for escaping the basement. This usually yields 600-800 xp by the time you start on the second area.

Think it's 150XP per escapee and you definitely do get it if executed and spectating somebody else's escape. When I die I stick around if it looks like somebody's on the verge of escaping. One time I got a load of extra posthumous XP after all of the other 3 escaped together (I didn't get that memo!)

^confirm that it’s 589k xp. For anyone wondering how long it took me: I played a total of 352 public matches. This can be significantly reduced if you’re strictly going for xp as I was playing for fun and not worrying about xp. My mains are Leatherface and Cook.

The next patch, set for September 12th, is going to fix the Cook padlocks farming. They'll still give XP for being placed, but you'll only get that bonus 3 times a match after this.

Just a little extra information to supplement the first guide:

It takes precisely 589,000 XP to reach Level 50.
Starting at around Level 20, each Level takes 16000 XP.
By the time you reach Level 50, you should have 329 SP, meaning you can fully level up around 5-6 characters (Family and Victim)
A good, escape game for a victim awards ~1500 to ~2000 XP. Hard carries, where you unlock everything, escape with all 4 survivors, and stab Grandpa once or twice, can push you upwards of 3000 XP, though these are rare in random public settings
You don't get any more XP for escaping in different ways (Generator, Battery, Fuse, and Valve are equal). You will gain additional XP for Fuse and Valve because of the steps (Finding the part, Placing the Part, Unlocking Exit).
You gain XP for leaving the basement and the first upstairs area. This happens the instant you cross the threshold of an unlocked door, so even if you are being chased, stepping in and out of the door frame nets you XP anyways.
Stabbing Grandpa is 500 XP, as much as Escaping, so don't be afraid to do it if you don't think you'll escape alive to boost your match XP.
For the Family, you want to aim for a full team wipe and getting Grandpa to Level 5 Sonar. Everything else awards very little XP to the family.
If you are desperate to farm XP, use the Cook. Placing a Padlock gives 50 XP every time and can be repeated on the same door. Farming during public matches like this can guarantee about 600 XP/min (rate of 5 seconds for putting on and taking off a padlock). In a 5 minute match, that's 3000 XP, though this is very boring and not very useful for your teammates.

Another important note is how perk and character ability XP works. Say you make 2000 XP in a match. Every Perk and Character Ability below Level 3 (max) gains 1000 XP, or half your match XP. If you are trying to level up every single perk, swap them out once they hit level 3. Otherwise, leave them in for better performance and more XP per match.

This took me somewhere between 200-300 matches to do and 50-60 hours of no-life playing as Victim mostly.

Finally, I've been making a spreadsheet to help people keep track of progress and determine how much XP you get for each action, as well as a 'tracker' of sorts for winning every way on every map. Please update it where you can, especially in Levels 10-20 where there are some ambiguous XP and SP totalling. I'll keep updating this myself at high levels (50-99), but that will take a while.
