How to unlock the Hardened achievement in The Vale: Shadow of the Crown - Definitive Guide
When you're heading towards Crow you'll stumble across a group of Mara barbarians, this unlocks after you win the fight.
You'll have just had a "flashback" to Uncle's training about War Hammers, which will come in handy as that is what the Mara all use.
They'll use a combination of Heavy attacks and Quick attacks. They will sometimes lead their attack with a throwing axe attack as well.
Listen for footsteps and set your shield in that direction to defend against a potential throwing axe. The throwing axes do make a sound as they are in the air. I found the fight always started with a throwing axe from the right but it could be different for everyone else.
Heavy attacks begin with a "rustling" of chain mail, which is when you can get some attacks in in order to cancel the enemy attack. I found I needed 2 hits to stop the attack but I could get in 3 hits if I was quick. If you have trouble at the beginning discerning between Heavy and Quick attacks, get your shield up. You can't block many Heavy attacks as they do damage through your shield, but it's better than taking a direct hit.
Quick attacks have to be blocked with your shield. I found they always did 2 attacks which have to be blocked before you can counterattack. If I was fighting multiple enemies I'd focus more on blocking attacks as they can whittle your health down fairly quickly. When there's many enemies only dish out damage when you're certain you don't have to defend.
Took me about 8 tries to get this as there's a lot going on. Between preventing Heavy attacks and the odd counterattack after Quick attacks you'll bring the enemies health down, I think there were 6 enemies to deal with. Listen out for enemies changing position and prioritise blocking attacks over dealing damage and you'll be ok.
