How to unlock the Unexpected Guests achievement in The Walking Dead: A New Frontier - Definitive Guide

Author's Note: While there is an option to import choices from Seasons 1 and 2, because of an error I was not able to so I was forced to create a new backstory. What differences this will make for people reading these solutions, I can't say. None of the achievements are missable and you'll get them anyway, but your experience may differ somewhat from mine. I'll keep these solutions as general as possible to account for that.

Javi, Kate and Kate's two stepkids, Gabe and Mariana enter the salvage yard. A walker approaches and Javi puts it down in an easy 3 button not-that-quick time event. You even get a crowbar as an added bonus. Brooding teenager Gabe wanders off into the yard and after a brief conversation, we have control over Javi for the first time.

You can ignore the barrels, school bus, soiled mattress and all the other junk and proceed further into the yard and to the left to find two blue cars to siphon gas from. The left one has a walker hiding under it that's dealt with in a single cn_LSd blow. Head past these cars to siphon more gas from a rusty old truck. You have enough gas to leave now if you want Head right past the large tires and green shipping container to find a ladder in the rear of the yard. Looking at it, then interacting with it again will prompt a choice to climb it or not.

If you want to talk with Kate or Mariana and haven't yet, do so now, but otherwise go ahead and climb the ladder, as Gabe comes along with you. Siphon gas from the ambulance, prying off the cap by holding cn_A and then cn_LSd. While the fuel siphons, head to the left to draw out a walker that can be killed with a single button press. The nearby trailer door is locked and can't be pried open, but a peek through the window reveals a floor hatch. Move the wood by the stairs and enter the hole it was covering, then crawl to the hatch and enter the well-stocked trailer.

Poke around a bit until you're faced with a major decision: Side with the kids and stay the night, or side with Kate and get back on the road. I chose to stay the night, which results in a conversation with Kate. While retrieving the gas can...

The chapter ends with Javi being knocked unconscious.

I syphoned from neither blue car and was able to progress to the ambulance.

Also, I chose to get back on the road and the same spoiler happened. So I guess it's not such a major decision

you don't even need to take the gas from the ambulance. I just progressed, and everything went according the rest of the guide.
Even if during the encounter, we get back to the ambulance to pick up the gas tank.

This achievement glitched on me twice. I deleted my save then started fresh without importing any other saves from previous games. The achievement unlocked after replaying up to this segment for the third time.

If the achievement doesn’t unlock go to the main menu, select Extras and next Achievements. The missing achievements will be unlocked.

for me the issues with unlocking wasn't random (that doesn't change the fact that it was still annoying).. but what caused it for me was my controller turning off (100% correlation between that and no achievement popping with three data samples throughout my playthrough)

i hope this helps someone (there could be other random reasons i just wanted to share that i caught onto my own personal reason for it not working)

If the achievements doesn't pop would highly recommend following the guide above as to where each chapter ends. If it doesn't pop in a 10-25 second time frame of reaching the next chapter. Restart the game, load back in that should pop your achievement. Ive done the same with 2 other tell tale games I've played and it has worked a charm. Give it a go!

Story related, cannot be missed.

During the supply run, you'll need press to pull a crowbar out of a walker's face and then press and to kill it. Afterwards, search the junkyard for useful supplies. You're free to explore the junkyard and interact with the other characters.

In order to progress with the story, you need to siphon gasoline from a wrecked vehicle. When Javier does this, he will be attacked by a walker underneath the vehicle. Press to quickly kill the walker. Siphon more gas from the three vehicles that you find in the junkyard.

When ready, head towards the ladder and press to climb it. In the new area, open the gas cap on the ambulance to discover that it is locked. Pry it open with the crowbar [Hold] + . Siphon more fuel by pressing four times. Head towards the left area to be attacked by a walker and press to make quick work of it. Approach the trailer door to discover that it is locked. Try prying it open using the crowbar by pressing only to fail. Have Javier look inside the trailer door to discover that there is a hatch door. Back away from the door and look for a plank that you can move out of the way. Enter through the hole that you see, crawl towards the hatch door and press to open it. Inside the trailer, you're free to search for supplies or interact with Gabe. To progress with the story you need to press to look at the shelves containing food supplies.

Make your choice:

  • We can stay the night.
    • This choice will have your group stay the night and choose their food. Kate will give Javier a candy-bar that she managed to find during her savaging in the junkyard. This choice will make Javier the more 'cool parent' in relationship with the children.
  • We have to keep moving.
    • This choice will have your group loot the food and Kate will give Javier a candy-bar that she managed to find during her savaging in the junkyard. This choice makes Javier the more 'bad parent' in relationship with the children.

Near the end of the episode, Javier will be put at gunpoint when he learns that the gas from the ambulance he has taken belongs to another group. Javier is taken hostage and must do what they say or be killed. Open the trailer door and Javier's family has hidden underneath the hatch door. You will need to fight Lonnie to proceed which can be played out in different ways. Kill Lonnie and the trophy will unlock.

This achievement is story-related and cannot be missed.

After making a decision to either stay the night or move on, Javi collects the gas taken from the ambulance but is caught by three people with guns. Max and Lonnie lead you into a trailer where your family is hiding. After talking back and forth, Max exits and leaves you with Lonnie. An altercation then occurs, and Max returns and knocks you out, unlocking the achievement.
