How to unlock the The Wandering Metropolis achievement in The Wandering Village - Definitive Guide

500 villagers is going to take you a while, but it is possible.
Id suggest working toward making wheat & bread to feed your people as soon as possible, as this seems to feed the most people. That with some berries & mushroom or beet soup should do it.
Also fish can be a good source of food if you have a few fish catchers & a fish breeding farm.
As for housing the huts are fine, your ppl will complain about housing quality, but it was never an issue & that little 4 square hut fits 6 people.
Build several Scavenger huts early on & always send people out to ruined settlements & such on the hopes of picking up more people.
Use the hornblower & keep an eye on the map for villagers on the road.
Have plenty of doctors on hand to fight poison clouds & cure people, along with some Decontaminators.
Set the autosave for every 10 minutes & if you have a mass death incident, reload & correct the issue before it happens... Store enough water to keep your people AND crops going when passing through the desert to prevent mass starvations.

This is what my Onbu looked like after gathering 500 villagers.

For anybody interested in how long this took based on the most recent version (v.0.7.10). -
185 days for 200 villagers
292 days for 300 villagers
462 days for 450 villages
509 days for 500 villagers

when starting a game there are sandbox settings called "villagers don't die" and "villagers don't leave" that I'm guessing would make this easier
The game menu says: "Achievements & Hostility Progression Disabled" when you toggle on the sandbox settings when starting a game. Think it's safe to assume you can't use the positive modifiers.

The guide above is great but I thought I’d add a couple of tips…
-Expand your map FOV asap. There is a building (can’t remember it’s name) that expands your FOV making it much easier to find Settlements
-Don’t worry about Kitchens. Fill your map with bakeries, windmills, and most importantly, Granaries. Seriously, I ended with like 50 granaries and 18,000 bread. Every other crop has to be changed out biome to biome except wheat. Have 2-3 farms growing wheat, 2-3 herbalists, 1-2 mycologists, and then everywhere else put everything you need for breadmaking.
-Quick biome rundown:
Jungle- avoid at all costs. in the jungle biome you automatically have a “low” poison rating, meaning your villagers will constantly get poisoned. in late game they also like to spawn back to back toxic forests in the jungle biome, which can be devestating.
Desert- honestly your best friend. wheat doesn’t take up too much water and you don’t have to worry about toxicity at all. this wound up being my favorite biome.
Mountain- pretty decent biome. Toxicity can be annoying but if you have 4-5 village doctor buildings (15 doctors total) it’s not bad.
Ocean- this biome also sucks. it’s pretty decent early game, but it seems that late game 9/10 islands are poisoned and your Onbu seems to insist on resting there. if you make him move he simply lays back down 3 steps later. get an Onbu punisher just in case, but generally avoid ocean biome.

Good luck everybody! I can’t speak for other difficulties but on novice this achievement is not difficult, just annoyingly long. I got to 500 on day 798, but it really depends on your luck.

This achievement just sucked. Took all the joy out of the game for me. Wasn't hard to get, just time consuming. Haven't wanted to play the game again after, so I suggest saving this one for last.

Agreed with Crazy1... what a fuckin slog this is. I'm at about 180 people and REALLY don't feel like getting another 320. If you ask me the achievements should have just been for 100 and 200. I hate when developers put achievements in games that are just a ridiculous grind for the sake of being a grind. Wouldn't be so bad if they would just reproduce on their own like in plenty of other of these city management games.

A recent update has seemed to make this not as much of a grind. You seem to encounter more people who will join you on the road and while exploring.

Stupid slog to grind out all 500 population, each run (the first 100 days) can end with only 30-40 people. This is pure stupidity and abuse to gamers who wants completion of this game, the devs can exchange it for simply beating the game on hard difficulty, it’s way better that way

The biggest advice I can give is, quit and wait a few minutes and reboot the game if you don’t encounter random scavenging events anymore, some simulation games like this some times run into such a situation that everything goes crazy or silent for technical or whatever reasons. My luck was switching between extremely lucky and unlucky during my run, I could had picked up 60+ People in 20 mins but the next hour I ended up with only 10, and I realized that no scavenging events had popped up since my luck turned bad. Once I quit and rebooted it, everything went back to normal for me, many events started to happen again. I was always trying to get the best choice for all scavenging events, some of them gave 4 to 8 people which is a big plus to the whole progress, perhaps frequent saving and loading causes the problem? I don’t know

EDIT: Other status abnormalities like food and herb reserves go down for no obvious reasons can be avoided using this method, if you having similar problems like me, some might get fixed by simply quitting and rebooting.
