How to unlock the Guru achievement in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Definitive Guide

*** (Note: A few people have found it impossible to attack the guys in the area explained by this guide, due to earlier decisions in the story. Read through the comments if that happens. I don't have a solution aside from loading an earlier save file.) ***

Credit: The core of this method comes from user "VRattleHead" on another achievements forum.

First, when you find fight dummies, attack them. At some point (not sure how many hits or the exact criteria), you'll get an "experienced" perk that lets you gain 10% more experience -- a big help. The earlier you do this, the better, but it's not essential.

Next, do as much as you can throughout the game to boost your experience from fighting, quests, whatever. From what I've seen, you need to reach Level 34 before triggering the summit in the last chapter, in order to reach Level 35 in the endgame, since you get somewhere around 1000 experience for finishing A Summit of Mages and then fighting the dragon.

Here's the important part.

If you reach this point in Chapter 3 but you still need experience, there's a fairly good way to grind for it. As long as you haven't triggered the summit (a point of no return) in A Summit of Mages, and you've done everything else you're able to get more experience quickly, you should still be able to get this by grinding.

Go east of Loc Muinne, across the bridge, to the Camp of the Order of the Flaming Rose. They're the guys dressed in red. Just go on a killing spree. If you're already well equipped by that point, it should be pretty easy even on Dark difficulty. Only the guard you're attacking will fight back, and after a few seconds, dead guards re-spawn (with a different random name), so you can just go around killing them for easy experience. It's not much experience, but it does add up and won't take too long. From what I'm seeing, it may take about an hour to gain a full level that way, which is why it's best to do this just before the end.

Sometimes they don't even fight back. I blast them with IGNI first, and that seems to help.

Level up until you're level 34 or a little higher, so that you can safely obtain level 35 from the endgame quests (summit and dragon). You could just keep grinding all the way to level 35, but that'll take longer.

If you already beat the game and didn't get the Gura achievement, just load your most recent save prior to starting the Summit of Mages endgame section, and follow the same instructions.

Just an addendum, but on the Iorveth path, it looks like the guards in the camp will attack you on sight, rather than standing there for the beating. You can still kill them, though, but since I've heard there's more experience to earn through normal play on Iorveth's path anyway, it might not be an issue.

I'm on Roche's path, and I can't attack anything in the Order camp.

Ooooh, that must mean they changed it in a patch. Can anybody confirm whether this works without the latest patch but stops working with it? I can update the guide.

I'll see if deleting the cache works and get back to you, and I changed my vote.

No, this doesn't work even with the cache cleared. What path are you on? I'm on Roche's. And until this is figured out, you should edit the guide saying that this might not work. I looked at this solution in the middle of my playthrough, and because of that, I didn't do anything to help myself get the achievement, which was clearly a mistake. Now, because of this guide, I'm probably going to have to do a second playthrough to get this.

It worked for me on both paths. Initially Roche's, where they would just sit there, be killed (sometimes not even defending themselves), and keep respawning. On Iorveth's path they would attack without provocation.

And you're at the Order of the Flaming Rose? The guys in red? It's been a few weeks since I've played, but it definitely worked for me and others so I'm not sure what the difference is. I'll add a note to the top of the guide saying that at least one person found that this method doesn't work due to not being able to attack any of them. Since there's a difference in their behavior between Roche's path and Iorveth's path, there might be more to it than I'm aware, such as other differences due to Geralt's attributes, good/bad play, etc.

I can confirm that this works for me on Roche's path. I've cleared up pretty much every quest in Act 3 bar the main one (A Summit of Mages) and I was at 33 and a half, so I decided to go and kill the Order of the Flaming Rose for a nice little XP boost. It worked for me absolutely fine, I just attack whatever guards I want and they die easily. I am playing through Xbox Live so I have all patches installed [as of 19/7/2012], so I do not understand why ViPeR866 is having any particular troubles.

Just a few suggestions and tips for those people looking to use the Order of the Flaming Rose to get yourself as high as possible for the end-game section;

- If you do the quest 'An Encrypted Manuscript' (which is very easy if you've kept most of your alchemy ingredients throughout the game) you obtain the crafting diagram for a Steel Sword called Caerme. It is incredibly powerful (arguably the most powerful Steel Sword outside of Dark Mode in regular game-play) and when upgraded further with Fire/Ysgith runes (which should be easy to purchase at such a late stage in the game) the weapon becomes an absolute slaughterhouse. Not to mention it's very easy to craft (Harpy Feathers are easily obtainable outside of Loc Muinne and the guy who crafts the sword for you sells Iron Ore and Timber I believe). Pick it up if you can - although not necessary it is a massive help when fighting the Order.

- Use Aard regularly and try to land attacks at their back. Because they don't fight back unless you're directly attacking them, this usually means you can nail them in 1/2 hits with a fully upgraded Caerme. Take advantage of their usual non-hostile nature.

- On the other hand, I highly suggest you invest in the 'Combat Acumen' skill to obtain group finishers. Simply make the enemies hostile with a weak 'A' attack or by using a Aard sign, and gather a group of three of them together, then push the up arrow to finish them all off swiftly. It makes boosting them for XP that little bit quicker (and with fully upgraded Swordsmanship path you generate Adrenaline at such a ridiculous rate that it would be a waste not to take full advantage of group finishers).

- Finally, while this may just be a trick of the mind, I believe that some members of the order become slightly stronger the more you kill them, so try to spread out your 'massacre' evenly, possibly moving from one side of the camp to the other and then vice versa. In particular I noticed that the guys with spears/halberds gave me a particularly hard time after I'd killed them a few times, so take advantage of traps/Aard to make sure that they're easily defeatable.

Hope this helps you. I also recommend that you get yourself a little bit of the way *into* level 34 before approaching the Summit, just in case the XP you earn at end-game isn't enough to push you over 35. Remember to save before you tackle the end-game just in case the XP isn't enough, as you can always revert back and kill more of the order before heading to the Summit again.

Do you have to be past a certain point in Act 3 to attack them. I've just started Act 3, and walking through their camp to get to Loc Muinne, I was unable to attack them. But hopefully I will be able to later.

I was able to attack them near the beginning (Iorveth's path) and near the end (Roche's path), but there was never a time when I tried that it didn't work. So something must be going on that I'm not aware of.

I read this at x360a.org and it turns out it's correct:

"Also noticed, you can only attack the Flaming Rose if you have fought with them earlier.

Spoilers below:

You have to return Anais to Temeria, and that's when the Flaming Rose will attack you. Once done you can return to the Flaming Rose camp and attack them.

They seemed to provide 5xp per kill. Its quick to kill them.

Also after starting the Summit of Mages to the end of the game you will get about 1000XP before battle with Letho. No XP for the final battle. "

When I loaded my save Triss save on Roche's path I could not hurt the Knights, but with my save where I saved Anais for the achievement (I had told Roche to give her to Natalis), I could hurt the Knights with no issue just as you said I could.

Ahhh yeah that could be the problem then. I saved Triss. I'll load some older saves up and try this and tell you guys how it goes.

Likewise, I was on Roche's path and saved Triss and couldn't attack the Flaming Rose.

worked like a charm. I had not saved Triss.

took me 19 minutes of slashing to level from 33 to 34 through this method.

It's been a long time since I played, but I think you return to the "central" area (going by memory) to get back there.

It wont let me leave the area because there's enemies nearby so this method makes no sense to me. I keep killing them an they keep respawning but then once I hit 34 it wont let me leave...?

If you enter Ch.3 at level 30+, you should be set for the achievement. I was on Iorveths path at Level 30, i did no sidequests, simply went forward with the Spellbreaker quest, that alone pushed me 1/4th into Level 34, killed the dragon and hit 35.

I suggest using the wiki and complete all sidequests possible in Ch. 1 and 2, this will set you up nicely to hit 35 somewhere during Ch.3.

The fighting dummies - When i played through Roches path, in Loredo house there is one that will respawn if you leave the area and come back - i tried hitting this one over and over again. - Didnt work.
But those first 5 in the first camp area... i destroyed all 5, did arm wrestling and dice (load/reload/save a few times) when i came back the dummies could be hit again. After i destroyed them the second time, the Experienced Buff kicked in (10% exp gain).

I think I may figured out why some people can't attack them. When I did it right before the final mission, I was able to attack them. Then after I beat the game, I loaded an earlier save and wasn't able to attack them. I think it depends on whether you gave Anais to Radavind or convince Roche to keep her and causes the Order to become enemies with you.

Confirmed working on 8/15/2016 on Roche path with Anais turned over to the Temerians. Its even faster than stated above -- I got a whole level (33-34) in about 15 minutes.

Doesn’t seem like you’re able to obtain those extra buff/perks on the Dark difficulty. While doing my first play through on normal I acquired the Experienced perk in the Prologue after destroying all the dummies and reloading/repeating a few times. I’ve just tried to repeat the process on Dark but it doesn’t seem to give it to you. I’ve saved and reloaded multiple times now, even did as Onsidic suggested and played arm wrestling and dice, yet have been rewarded with no Experienced perk.

I can confirm that GhostJohn325 is correct for those on Roche's path: the trigger that determines whether you can grind out XP against the Order occurs during the "Of His Blood and Bone" quest, which becomes available when you choose to help Roche instead of saving Triss when working on the "For Temeria" quest. Near the end of that quest after you free Anaïs, choose the following dialogue option: "Kings don't always keep their word". If you choose that one, the Order will become your enemies, so you can attack them. If you choose the other one (which hands over Anaïs to them), you can't attack them.

Can confirm confirm that you CAN only attack the guards if you A hep Roche (don’t help triss) AND chose the dialogue
Only then can you attack the guards, otherwise you can’t attack them

I got the dummy perk in Dark no problems there. You have to destroy 10 of them. There's 5 in the prologue camp in 6 total in flotsam so you can skip one.

Going the Iorveth path I completed every single quest, I was lvl 13 upon arriving at Vergen, 30-31 when arriving at Loc Muinne. I hit 35 right after the completion of the quest Spellbreaker. I never grinded for XP at any point I just did quests. I had about 2000 extra XP over lvl 35 after the game ended.

This isn’t easy, but there are a few ways to make the journey a little quicker.

One of the most important methods is to gain the Experienced perk which offers a +10% XP boost. This is achieved by destroying 10 different training dummies. You can do this across a number of locations in the game, but it is best to do it as soon as possible.

The earliest place to get this is in Foltest’s Camp. There are 5 dummies in the area that respawn. Destroy 10 and you’ll earn the perk.

I strongly advise doing this on your easy playthrough. This achievement requires you to complete pretty much every quest as well as kill just about every monster you encounter. If, like me, you missed or failed some quests here and there, or you think you aren’t going to hit level 35 by the end of the game, fear not. First off, the last quest, A Summit of Mages, will net you 1000XP for completing it, so you have to be level 34 before you go through with it (make a save before you do it just to be safe) if you want to get this achievement. Most importantly, there is actually a spot in Chapter III that will allow you to easily grind for XP.

The spot is located just outside the Loc Muinne city, in the camp of the Knights of the Order. These knights wear red armor and you will be able to kill them indefinitely for about 5XP every kill. They respawn almost instantly and most of the time they don’t even fight back, making it ridiculously easy to farm here. Grind here until you reach level 34, and then proceed to complete the last main quest.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Many people have reported not being able to attack the Knights at all, hence not being able to kill them. If you followed Iorveth’s path, you should be able to do this automatically, and they will actually attack you on sight. On Roche’s path, you must help Roche rescue Anais La Valette from Dethmold, and tell him to reconsider giving her to the Order, and to consider his other options. Make a save before you talk with him here, just to be safe. You’ll know you did it right if Roche says he has other plans when the Order confronts him outside of Dethmold’s hideout, because after the dialogue, a combat encounter will occur, and you’ll fight the order. After fighting them here, return to the camp outside Loc Muinne and start killing them.

To minimize the grinding, I would recommend taking on as many side quests as possible and fighting every enemy you encounter without running past it. However you decide to go about doing this, the achievement will unlock once you hit level 35.
