How to unlock the Poker! achievement in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Definitive Guide

Here are some tips for the achievement:

1) Your choice of partners is important. Better opponents will forfeit when your initial roll is a lot better than theirs. Easier opponents seem to stay in the game even if it's clear they're not going to win -- Zindrab in the inn in Chapter 1, for instance. At first, I was trying against a woman just outside the walls, and she'd often forfeit even if my initial roll was 3 of a kind or better, making it pretty much impossible to get the achievement unless you roll 5 of a kind as a complete re-roll on your second attempt. Zindrab stayed in when my first roll was 4 of a kind, letting me complete the set on my second roll and get the achievement. Any of them at the table in the Inn's basement will probably work, but if you're past chapter 1, try with the lowest-ranking dice players in each chapter.

2) I was using the corner-stacking trick when I got the achievement (ex: see the video from the first solution), but I don't know for sure that it helped. The initial placement is random, plus it takes longer to drag them down to the corner, so each attempt is going to take that much longer and they'll probably only stack the way they first entered the board anyway. And even stacking them, one or two will probably fall off the top of the stack when you release (if they're even positioned to stack at all). Although, the initial placement does seem to be less random than just rolling from the middle, so it's possible that stacking them might give you 3 or 4 on the first roll more often than a random roll, making it worth the added time to set it up each time. Your call though.

3) As other have said, you don't need to roll 5 of a kind at once. And even if you do (on your first roll), you don't get the achievement. The "trick" is that you have to win the match with 5 of a kind. The danger in getting 5 of a kind on your first roll is that your opponent is probably going to forfeit, denying you the achievement.

4) Don't mistake the 5 dice for the 6 dice. They're both stars, but one is a traditional pentagram (5 sides) and the other is more like a Star of David (6 sides).

5) If you have no matching dice, you might as well re-roll them all. Otherwise, keep the ones you have the "most" of after your first roll, and select the others (with X) to be re-rolled. If you have two pair, just stick with your favorite pair because it's probably not going to matter.

6) Some have said this is a good way to earn extra money for trying for the achievement, but it's a slow process to keep reloading each time you lose. I'd recommend just getting a fair amount of money to start (a couple hundred, maybe), then always betting/raising the minimum. If you Pass, you automatically lose, so don't do that. Save before starting for the achievement, play until you run out of money, and only reload if you're broke. Once you get the achievement, reload if you have a net loss.

What an awful achievement. :(

No disagreement here. The only bright spot is that anybody can get it, eventually. It's just not much fun while trying.

I have a degree in applied math and I actually basically already had the probabilities for this in a little file on my computer. I just had the probabilities calculated for having 3 turns to roll the dice. If you have 2, the probability of getting it in any one try (assuming you keep all dice that you have the most of) is %1.26. So yeah, something that you have to do over and over until you hit that %1.26 is pretty dumb. BioShock's jackpot achievement was about as bad but at least each try only took 5 seconds.

What makes it unhelpful to them is that you're not telling them how to get it, they don't want helpful tips, they apparently think there's some secret that you refuse to tell us. »:(

I, on the other hand, thank you. I noticed opponents forfeiting often later in game, so
I'll give it another go next playthrough. Luck achievements are some off the worst, right up there with MP and kill count ones.

i hate this sh... this is the only cheevo i need for the 1000... and always get 4 of the same dice, but never 5!!!!!

Just a note that I was able to get this cheevo using the stacking method. I stacked and got 2 out of 5. Then stacked the remaining three and got them to all land in a stack on top of each other (or inside of each other) and they were all the same to make 5 of 5. I believe this stacking is exploiting how the game handles when dice are clipped into each other when the roll timer expires.

you say that if you have no pairs or better after the first roll that you might as well roll them all again. this is true. probabilistically re-rolling all 5 and re-rolling any 4 give you the same chance of ending with 6 of a kind after the re-roll. however since they are equivalent i chose to simply re-roll any 4 of the 5 and save myself the extra fraction of a second selecting the 5th die as well. but it essentially doesn't matter.

More math analysis! As TBabbRuns4Him already pointed out, the odds of rolling a five-of-a-kind with one allowed re-roll is 1.263%. Therefore the odds of rolling a five-of-a-kind on or before your 55th attempt is 50.3% and the odds of getting it on or before your 182nd attempt is 90.1%. Now I can not say for sure if this game represents a fair die roll, but if it did those would be your expectations.

I loath this achievement. I have played this stupid dice game for 3 hours straight and haven't gotten it yet. Does the way you roll matter at all or is it sheer luck?

I would just like to say, I don't know if it was just dumb luck, but I looked up the stack method and on the 3rd try I got this achievement after grinding for three hours without it and not. Doesn't hurt to try it. To explain what I read, in the part where you roll the dice, move the die all the way into the bottom left corner until the dice mash up into a neat row. move up a bit so you aren't dropping dice off the board but keep it in the upper part and VERY lightly tap to roll. If they do more than drop, you were too rough. I rolled a natural 5. I passed my second turn and the achievement popped when I won. As mentioned before, it could have just been dumb luck bc a lot of people have reported this solution as a hoax, but after hours of grinding with no luck and it working that fast for me, I'm a believer.

First off I wish the stacking trick was explained here as I had to research it otherwise, which in itself was not easy. For anyone wanting to know the stacking trick requires you to move all your dice ALL the way into one of the four corners where the die will run out of room and will move together into one clump of dice as a result. Now that you have a mass of die move to the middle of the upper ledge area so they do not fall very far but get aware from the edge to limit the chance of them falling out of the board. This final part requires a lil skill and luck,You want to move the analog stick as little as possible to make your roll occur, this limits the amount of roll and distance they travel...they will also end up clipping on each other and making a 5 die stack. This is the stack trick,I tended toget a stack of 3 or 4 at the most but you get the idea.

As far as Im concerned the stacking trick is a complete wash...UNLESS used in certain situations. I think far more useful is the fact you are dragging the dice over a shorter fall due to the higher ledge so they have less time to rotate during the fall to the board. Also dropping is very important,as again it does not allow the die as much time to tumble or worse go outside the board.

My recommendation would be do your first roll ,or should I say drop, immediately upon being able to roll. Then when you get 2,3 or 4 of a kind is where the skill comes in. Namely being able to look at how the remaining dice are stacked and determining what is best to do next.

On the attempt I won it I had 3 of a kind and the two remaining I moved over to the edge of the board to reduce the fall distance, the sides I needed were facing me and NOT upwards. Had they upwards I would have wanted to stack them.Since they were facing me I Dropped them using the up on the analog every so slightly. Resulting in my five of a kind.

Finally if given the option between two single pairs I almost NEVER got a 4 match ...dont know if this is due to coding or maybe just my rolls. But they definitely seemed to be the rarest die to get,So I would not pick those.

There is no sure way for this achievement it is pure luck. I just got it myself. What I did was move to the side of the board and just drop the dice. I didn't stack them first I just dropped them. I ended up with 4 of a kind, luckily the guy didn't fold and I rolled the last one and got the last one I needed. Pure luck

Yeah, fuck this achievement, lol.

The stacking trick isn't that great, although I did seem to get more 3 of kind off the bat, then just a regular roll, but it seemed to take more time than it was worth. In the end I just got it from regularly rolling the dice, first got 3, then matched the other 2. I usually threw them left or up at medium force.

This was a helpful guide for me. I used Zindrab at the Flotsam's Inn. I found he does resign on "3 or 4 of a kind" if you have a better Roll then him. But if he also have at least a 3 of a kind he won't resign. My strategy was to do a normal roll on my first roll and not corner rolling. And depending on the top facing for my second roll I would do a normal roll if the was not close to number i needed but, if it had the number i needed then I did corner rolling. In all I manage to rack up 600 gold when i started with 80 trying to go for this achievement.

This achievement took me about 30 minutes. I got reallly lucky during that particular game and rolled a 4 of a kind, followed by the one additional symbol that I needed for the achievement. I was playing against Zindrab, at the Flotsam.

Tried doing 'slow' rolls and flicking the dice into corners, but I never did get anything higher than a 3 of a kind. It was something at least.

I literally got this on my third game of dice. I played someone in the Inn and on my first roll had (4) ones. Then I upped the bet to 7 orens and the opponent raised and I rerolled the odd die and it came up as a one.

Finally got it. Took roughly 5.5 hrs but I consider myself lucky it didn't take longer than that. For the first hour or two I tried all the tricks and tactics recommended on this site and others but it just wasn't working. So for the rest I just did normal rolls. My winning game started with two matching ones and got the other three on the next roll. Extremely lucky !!! Also, after 5+ hrs of doing this crap I have that song from the first towns poker stuck in my head -_-

I finally managed to win this last night. I gave up on this achievement during my first playthrough of the game. I started a new game on Dark (not that the difficulty setting had anything to do with it) and replayed the soldier in the camp at the very beginning of the game. I can't count how many times I ended with four of a kind. I think it was my 74th roll and I got five of a kind on the first roll. Then I obviously didn't select any dice to re-roll. Once I won the achievement popped. I think that is also a requirement, you still have to win the match to get the achievement. Anyways, I'm glad this horrible achievement has not been obtained. Persistence is key.

After countless hours I finally got it (long enough to go from 0 Orens to 1800). When I finally did get it I got unbelievably lucky; I rolled five-of-a-kind on my initial roll, then selected a re-roll and to my utter astonishment he didn’t forfeit... he rolled again! Achievement popped at the end of the match. Definitely sick of hearing that soldier’s “Heh, heh” after every loss though. Thank god it’s over. Can’t believe the devs would add a bullshit achievement like that, good luck to anyone attempting it.

Rock up to the dice table in Foltest's Camp:
"Fancy rolling a few rounds with me?"
*Rolls three 5s*
*Matches the last 2 dice, I've done it!*
*Other guy rolls and ends up with all 6s...*
*You lose*
"Heh heeeh..."

If anyone reads this and has trouble with this achievement, make sure you have a win of (player)1 / 0 (soldier in foltests camp) (start of the game) , make a save and then bet 5 orens only and keep going, if you roll a three of a kind you have a better chance at doing this achievement

I ended up just rolling the dice and hoping for the best. I started out by playing against Zindrab at the Inn in Flotsam, but I got frustrated and went back to the guy in the camp that you can play dice with. I felt like I was getting better rolls here, including three or so four-of-a-kinds, and eventually the five-of-a-kind.

In the end, it boils down to luck, so I guess I should consider myself extremely lucky that I spent about one and a half hours on this one :D

After hours and hours of this I rolled five of a kind in my first roll...and he forfeited. Still trying to hunt this one down. Changing between stacking and normal rolls although stacking hasn't seemed to improve my odds at all - I'm using the guy in the prologue.
Just rolled another five of a kind in my first roll and the opponent forfeited despite having a 4 of a kind. This may be the worst achievement I've ever gone for.

Finally got it! I rolled three of a kind and on my next roll the faces of the two remaining die were the number I needed so I used the corner stacking method and dropped them face up. I got incredibly lucky with their starting position...

After 4+ hrs, I finally unlocked this horrendous cheevo. I was having no luck playing normally (Saw only a handful 4 of a kinds.) Was getting frustrated so I swapped to the stacking method and instantly noticed an improvement. Had multiple 3 and 4 of a kind on the first roll. Stacking method is certainly the way to go for anyone having any trouble. Best of luck

This achievement can be brutal - there are no cheats. The corner stacking thing doesn't work, it'll just waste your time as you have to move those slow moving dice to the corner every time.

The biggest hardship is people resigning when you roll three of a kind. To prevent this, use the guy in Foltest's camp at the VERY BEGINNING OF THE GAME, when Roche is questioning you. Pick the first choice when you recall what happened and find the guy at the table (first left toward's the map marker then first right into the soldier's training area). He won't resign, even if you get four of a kind. Just make sure you save and bet the lowest possible, then re-load if you run out of cash.

This area also means you can skip this one until last, then just restart a new game and go right there within 5 minutes.

I tried the stacking thing for a while, but it was just wasting time and required my concentration, so it wasn't working for me.

That said, I found another method that did eventually work:

Rather than moving the dice about, the moment they spawn, just tap UP on the Right Analog... It doesn't have to be soft, and actually should have a bit of force.
More often than not, throwing the dice up with a little force causes them to bunch up in the upper corner without rolling or bouncing significantly. In other words, it produces a similar result to the stacking trick, but with far less time and far less concentration required.
This initially struck me as a bit counter-intuitive, since there is less room upward, and most people would probably throw to left or right... but that actually makes it more likely that the dice will bounce off the table.

I was literally just watching YouTube videos while I was rolling the dice with one hand and only briefly paying attention to the screen when it came time to pick dice to reroll.

Had to downvote you because the guy at the camp WILL DEFINITELY resign if you roll 4 of a kind of your first roll. What bullshit.

EDIT: with that being said....after reading Debauchery's tip, I literally just got the achievement about 5 minutes after posting that. You CAN get it from the first guy at the camp, but he will quit if you roll four of a kind right off the bat. You'll have to get your 5 on the second attempt. If you edit your guide, I'll change my vote.

EDIT again, well, you haven't visited the site in like 2 years, and it looks like you've given up on Xbox completely, so fuck it lol.

I've found that there is no real easy or quick way to do this. You can try all the other methods, but the best way to earn this is just be patient.

You may earn this on your first go, you may earn it on your 400th go. But there are a few things that may make this a little easier. Every time you play, always bet low, this will allow you to play more games and reduce the amount of orens you lose. It doesn't matter how fast, slow, hard or how softly you throw the dice, just make sure they stay on the board.

Once you start playing, always keep the duplicate dice as your core dice. These may be anything, but it seems that three and five appear more often in multiples. This is just an observation, but you may have different luck. Just keep track of the numbers you see most often in multiples of 2 and above.

Now all you have to do is keep rolling until you get a set. Usually if you have a three of the same dice and you try to roll the other two, your opponent may retire. This is common, but just keep playing past it as it depends on their dice.

If at any points you happen to roll a full set of the same dice and this doesn't unlock, there is nothing you can do about it. Just move on and keep trying. This happened to me, but I'm not sure if the game just doesn't register a full set of the same dice in your current turn, or if it's just a little buggy.

this can be a frustrating achievement as it seems to be based on luck, you might get it on your first attempt or it might take you multiple attempts. there is an exploit that you can use that will make this much easier. instead of rolling the dice, use the left stick and drag the dice to the edge of the screen this will stack the dice. then move them back to the bowl area or whatever it is and barely flick the right stick to drop the dice. you might get four of one dice or at least a two or three of a kind. then just do the same thing again. I got this achievement on my second attempt, messed up the first one by dropping the dice too close to the edge of the screen and lost one don't do that.

credit to this goes to Kal_El, found his thread on xbox360achievements in this thread here: http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36...

Don't waist time on this one. I spent hours trying to get this and ended up getting it again later on the quests. Save this for last.
So, if you didn't get it randomly, start a new game or load one of your saves from the prologue. There is one area (right before the part where you shoot the baltista) in the back of the camp to arm wrestle and roll dice. Use this area to get the achievement because THE ROLLER WILL NEVER QUIT. You can roll 4 of a kind and he'll keep going.
Stacking didn't help at all. But it is helpful to use that method when you have 4 of a kind. Line your 1 dice up to match the picture on the side of the dice you are rolling to the side picture of your matched dice, use the edge of screen to do this and lightly drop the dice without rolling it on the side of table.

Aside from the method below (which only some have found useful), this is purely based on luck. However, there a few things you can do to make your task a little easier.

First off, you are advised to try and earn the achievement at the earliest opportunity. That means playing the opponent in Foltest's camp at the very beginning of the game. This is preferable because later, better opponents are more likely to fold if your first roll contains three or more of-a-kind.

The most straight-forward approach is simply to hold any duplicates over for your second roll, even if you have just two matching dice.

Be aware that the achievement is based on you having five-of-a-kind at the end of your hand, not after your first roll. If you are lucky enough to roll five-of-a-kind first time, merely hold all of your dice.
