What Was That?

What Was That?

Attack, counter, cast a Sign and throw a bomb (in any order) in under 4 seconds.

How to unlock the What Was That? achievement in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition - Definitive Guide

Start with the counter (press cn_LT as the enemy attacks), since that's a movement that you need your enemy to perform and can't wait.

Quickly press cn_RT to use a sign. Quen is my favorite since it feels the fastest to cast. Axii is also nice cuz it can stun the enemy keeping them still.

Then hit the enemy once with a sword (cn_X)...

... and finally throw (without aiming) a bomb of your choice by quickly pressing the cn_RB button.

Achievement unlocked. In fact I had to try a couple of times and a few variations until I was fast enough.

If this solution helps you in any way, please leave it a thumbs up to let me know. Thanks!

Best place to do this is in the tutorial. I tried for several hours once I was leveled in the 50s with no luck. Saw comments to do it in the tutorial. Had the achievement in a few minutes.

can this not be gotten in the tutorial any longer or do I have a glitched achievement/game already. I just started this, got to the tutorial to do this and tried for an hour and a half. I have it down to a science. Yes, before you ask I am successfully countering (left trigger before the attack and Geralt kicks him). What else could I be missing

I did this in the tutorial no problem. I did counter, attack, sign, bomb. Got it first try.

Yeah.... having the same issue as NightKing. I got this, no problem, back in 2015, but it simply refuses to unlock this time, regardless of what order I do the attack, bomb, and sign in. Tried it against bandits with a combination of Samum and Dragon's Dream bombs, and every sign 'cept Yrden, no joy. Temporarily started a newgame to try it in the tutorial, where I think I did it last time, and it still won't unlock. Frustrating.

*Added later* It finally unlocked. I deleted my save, since I was still only in White Orchard, and re-installed the game, and it unlocked on my first attempt.

This cannot be done on NG+ since it auto skips the Combat section of the tutorial. Better to start a clean new save and do it there. Might be worth adding to the guide since I must have restarted a NG+ two or three times wondering if I pressed the wrong button.
